The Heritage Steam Collection

Ever since the first steam railway in Australia opened between Melbourne and Sandridge in 1854, a huge variety of different classes operate across the country on 3 notable track gauges. Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and Tasmania used 3 foot 6 or narrow gauge.

New South Wales had standard gauge or 4 foot 8 and a half inches, and Victoria and South Australia shared the Irish Broad Gauge of 5 foot 3 inches. Interestingly, South Australia also used narrow gauge, and a number of locations such as Gladstone and Peterborough had triple gauge rail yards.

Revenue earning steam on the mainlines finished in the 1970's, however steam still remained in industrial service with the Richmond Vale Railway at Hexham in New South Wales, which used the 2-8-2 10 class tank engines which had previously operated on the South Maitland Railways from new.

In this production we take a detailed look at a number of preserved steam locomotives from South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales in this action packed DVD for the railway enthusiast.

Main locomotives featured:
Tasmania: M4
Victoria: Y112, K153, K 160, K 163, R 761, R 707, R 711, J 515 and J 541
South Australia: 621, 520, 523, Rx, F and W22
New South Wales: 3642, 3265 and 2705.
