Canadian Thunder 7 - Alyth to Edmonton

Southwest of downtown Calgary is the 168 acre sprawling mass of Alyth Yard.

With a 48 track hump yard, it has a capacity of over 2200 freight cars and is considered one of the busiest yards on the CP network.

300 kilometres to the north at Edmonton is Walker Yard, CN's answer to it's southern competitor.

Our journey trackside begins in an industrial area along Portland Street, Calgary - a favourite after hours haunt for railfans - that has an unobstructed view of the rail operations at the western end of Alyth Yard. Here we'll witness westbound departures and switchers tirelessly building up and breaking down trains.

We then head north to Edmonton via Crossfield and Bowden, to East Junction, rounding off with some early evening action at Union Junction.
