Canadian Thunder 3 - Hope to Ashcroft

Heading east from the city of Vancouver, sprawling plains and urban living soon gives way to steep hills and an abundance of greenery.

The gentle flow of the Fraser River is transformed into a raging torrent as it passes through the canyons north of Hope, and at Lytton the Thompson flows into the Fraser, providing a pass for both railroads and highway.

With the highways taking the same path as the railroads, many opportunities arise to railfan the Thompson and Fraser.

We commence our journey at Harrison Hot Springs, a dot on the map between Agassiz and Hope. Continuing along the Lougheed Highway takes us to Hope where we swing north and follow the Trans Canada Highway.

The passing loop at Chapmans is a rare gap in what initially is a solid wall of trees, and the small town of Boston Bar opens up a world of possibilities, with both the CN and CP providing the railfan with many offerings.

The program concludes with an extended visit to the Ashcroft Terminal. This location provides an outstanding view of the Thompson River, with both railroads being in close proximity.
