The Nevada Northern Railway was born in the early years of the twentieth century out of the desire to exploit the copper ore deposits located within the surrounding area of Ely and Ruth, Nevada.

Through a series of corporate transactions, the Nevada Northern eventually became a subsidiary of the Kennecott Copper Corporation, and with declining ore reserves and copper prices, the smelter at McGill ceased operations in 1983, with the railroad itself suspending all operations soon after.

However all was not lost. In 1986, Kennecott transferred the entire Ore Line, including the railroad's yard and shop facilities at East Ely tothe White Pine Historical Railroad Foundation which now operates the railroad as the Nevada Northern Railway Museum.

Owing to its remoteness, the facilities at East Ely were never modernised, and visitors are permitted to venture through the yards and workshops where they'll encounter a truly authentic historic railroading experience.

Excursions also include multiple photo runs through canyons, tunnels and open plains. Michael Adams, a keen New Zealand railfan, spent three days in the winter of 2011 experiencing the sights and sounds of the Nevada Northern in all its glory with endless blue skies and snow covered mountains enhancing what was already a magical event.

Michael has captured a vast array of shots, including both steam and classic Alco diesel action, and are presented in this video for all to enjoy.
