Matamata to the Mount 2009

Sit back as we take a trackside journey from Matamata to the Mount, where we’ll witness trackside rail action from the town of Matamata, to Waharoa, both sides of the Kaimai tunnel to Taurangaand Mount Maunganui.

In this re-edited 2009 edition, we’ll also see more action from Kinleith, Kawerau, Te Puke and along the coast of the Bay of Plently.

During the course of this video, you will see container trains moving between Taurangaand Auckland, and logging trains heading for Mount Maunganui from Kinleith, Kawerau and Murupara.

The occasional ‘Silver Fern’ passenger express also makes an appearance.

The triangle at Waharoa could be claimed to be a ‘Hot Spot’ - with easy access and up to a dozen trains during daylight hours passing through here on any given Saturday - railfanning has never been easier.

The mighty Kaimai Tunnel is an 8.9 kilometre single track bore through the Kaimai Ranges that connects the Waikato plains to the Bay of Plenty.

The longest rail tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere, the Kaimai has passing loops at each end, where meets are the norm, not the exception.

There’s plenty of action from both ends.
