Union Pacific's Sherman Hill

We begin our vist to Union Pacific's famous Sherman Hill in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Cheyenne Yard. Between Cheyenne and Laramie is the crossing of the Continental Divide with 3 tracks over Sherman Hill. Tracks 1 & 2 have a 1.55% ruling grade while 3 is at less than 1%. This stretch of railroad has always been a challenge for the Union Pacific and the giant 4-8-8-4 Big Boys were desighned to handle this... now it's big diesels.
