The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway - Tindharia to Darjeeling

Drivers Eye View Tindharia to Darjeeling. For the first time ever, a Driver's eye view of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.  This famous Indian 2 foot gauge line runs for 55 miles from New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal up to Darjeeling in the foothills of the Himalayas. We ride aboard a steam charter train into its second day, starting roughly half way up the line at Tindharia. The sunny weather, coupled with state of the art cameras, provide a spectacular view of this unique hill railway. Our iconic B class steam engine climbs relentlessly through the magnificent scenery over gradients as steep as 1 in 18! Following the Hill Cart Road most of the way, we cross it dozens of times to ease the gradient or lessen a curve. We run on the very edge of the mountains, squeeze through the narrowest of ledges and pass through towns and villages to the summit of the line at 7,407 feet above sea level at Ghum. The railway is so unique and precious that it has become a UNESCO World..

DMU Tracks
V125FD108

DMU Tracks

100% stereo sound with pictures! TRACKS is a play on words - stereo soundtracks coupled with railway tracks. From the 1980s onwards, Video 125’s cameras have roamed the country filming our renowned Driver’s eye views. Although filmed in standard definition, the sound has always been recorded in high definition. Throughout that time we were using full broadcast quality microphones and recording equipment, giving us a unique opportunity to reproduce the sounds of first generation diesel multiple units (DMUs) going about their workaday business. As well as first generation DMUs such as the ubiquitous class 101, we see single units, 2, 3 and 4 car trains of various combinations, many hotchpotches lashed together to make up serviceable trains with a dearth of new rolling stock towards the end of BR. There are units on main lines and branch lines mainly in blue and grey and Network SouthEast livery. We’ve also included a few preserved units in green. There’s ..

French Tram Archive
V125AD357

French Tram Archive

Unique film capturing the end of an era… Just like the UK, tram systems in France reached a peak between the wars. However, only 24 systems out of a grand total of 130 were still running in the 1950s. This motivated a number of amateur cine cameramen to travel the length and breadth of the country to record them for posterity before they closed. What they filmed are remarkable in many ways and very different to those in Great Britain. For example, many routes ran far out of town, often on single track serving small outlying villages. All vehicles were single deck often pulling trailers. Some were interurban such as from Marseille to Aix-en-Provence. The archive was compiled by French video company Les Editions du Cabri and first released in France on DVD. It includes cine film taken from the 1930s to the 1970s complete with soundtrack. The video also features a number of fascinating old postcards. Systems featured include Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Dijon, Lille, Font..

The Berks & Hants
V125DEVD088

The Berks & Hants

Drivers Eye View We join a brand new class 802 IET (Intercity Express Train) upon arrival at Exeter St David's station en route from Plymouth to London. Our train is formed of 10 coaches and calls at Tiverton Parkway and Taunton before branching off onto the so-called Berks and Hants route, a series of disparate lines connected together to form a shorter and more direct route from the South West to the Capital. Our train runs non-stop for over 100 miles from Taunton to Reading, only then do we join the original GWR main line into London, having switched from diesel to electric power and travelling at speeds of up to 125 miles per hour. This cross-country scenic line was filmed during the summer of 2019. There's a great deal of interesting history to the route, only opened as a through line in 1906 with the completion of the last section of new track from Cogload Junction to Castle Cary. Now is your chance to see this sinuous line as the driver does. ..

Underground Tracks

Long before the invention of YouTube and smartphones, Video 125 cameras were out and about filming the London Underground for our Driver’s eye view videos. Although mainly filmed in standard definition, the sound was a different matter. 100% of the time we were using full broadcast television standard microphones and recording equipment. This means that long-since scrapped 1959, 1962 and 1967 tube stock on the Central, Northern and Victoria lines can still be heard in full stereo sound. The long-since scrapped A, C and D sub-surface stock on the Hammersmith & City, Circle, District and Metropolitan, lines also heavily feature in this unique video production filmed between 1988 and 2014. Not only can you relive the nostalgic sounds but you will also see the video footage too! Unpainted aluminium and mid-life refurbished stock as well as trains still in service in 2020. There are even a couple of surprises, such as the 1938 tube stock filmed on the Isle of Wight. Ma..

Edinburgh & Glasgow

Drivers Eye View Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh Waverley via Falkirk High. Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Central via Shotts. Following the electrification and introduction of brand new class 385 electric trains on the core intercity route between Scotland’s two main cities, Video 125’s cameras filmed on board one of the ScotRail Express services running from Queen Street to Waverley via Falkirk High. One of the other five routes between the two cities runs via Shotts. We take another class 385 this time from east to west finishing at Glasgow Central. As well as the view itself,  there are plenty of runbys, shots of the driver, aerial views and even the viewpoint of the signallers in the Waverley Signalling Centre.  Paul Coia expertly narrates the detailed history of the myriad of lines in the central belt. On the disc version, you can even de-select the narration if you so wish and just listen to the stereo soundtrack. ..

Pendolino

Drivers Eye View Experience the thrill of riding in the cab of an iconic Pendolino tilting train, travelling over the West Coast Main Line, the UK’s busiest. We travel on  board the 1220 Virgin Trains’ London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly service running via Stoke on Trent. It’s quite amazing to see the degree of tilt from the driver’s viewpoint and how easily the class 390 takes the curves at speeds of up to 125 mph! At 2 hours and 6 minutes, our journey is shown virtually in real time. As well as the usual cab cameras, we see the eleven coach train at dozens of locations, including Milton Keynes, Stoke on Trent and Stockport stations. We even take a brief look inside the Rugby ROC (Rail Operations Centre). Narration is by BBC Radio 3’s Ian Skelly. He recalls the fascinating history of the ‘London and Birmingham’,  Britain’s first long distance intercity railway, engineered by Robert Stephenson and opened in sections..

The Old Gotthard Tunnel Route
V125DEVD085

The Old Gotthard Tunnel Route

Drivers Eye View The original Gotthard railway tunnel through the Swiss Alps, took ten years to build and cost 147 lives. It was a mammoth undertaking and required the construction of long ramps on either side totalling 85 miles. Dozens of tunnels, viaducts and bridges were necessary. The ruling gradient of 1 in 37 was deemed to be just about the maximum that the original steam locomotives could handle, even then, trains were usually double-headed and even had banking engines attached at the rear! In order even to keep to this severe gradient, the engineers had to construct a number of additional spiral tunnels to gain height, hewn out of solid rock. Our film begins at the Swiss town of Lugano, where we see the funicular that runs from the picturesque historic lakeside town up to the main line railway station. There we take a front seat in the cab of a modern Regional Express EMU for a spectacular journey. As soon as we depart, our train has to climb up and through the Monte Cene..

Video 125 has been here before, 30 years ago in fact, but so much has changed. Signalling, privatisation, Network Rail, Marylebone station, re-doubling of the line and even the Evergreen initiative that has seen strategic improvements to infrastructure and consequential increase in line speeds. In the last decade alone, Chiltern Railways has vastly increased the number of services over the Chiltern main line. At first, our train takes us alongside the Metropolitan and Jubilee lines and past Wembley Stadium. We then join the former Great Central/Great Western JOINT line at Northo..
