Steam Times 2

Along the Track in New South Wales - The Western Line 1957 – 1977. This is the second in a series of archived DVDs (with full sound!) looking at the railway trackside scene in Australia and some overseas countries at various times from the late 1950s to the 1970s.  The subject of the series is predominantly steam in normal, everyday service, before the final moves to full dieselisation and/or electrification. Steam Times 2 looks at the Western Line (and some of its Branch Lines) in NSW from 1957 to 1977. The Programme is divided into Four Sections: The first looks at special workings in the Blue Mountains, with its very steep grades.  The second Section moves away from electrified track and looks at the picturesque and sinuous line from Lithgow to Bathurst including glimpses of the Oberon and Mudgee branches. The third section looks at workings west of Bathurst.  There is quite a variety of scenery and traffic, with vigorous locomotive working predomi..

Steam on the Fleurieu Peninsular

2012 marked the 60th anniversary of the Australian Railway Historical Society South Australian Division and to celebrate the event, Rx 207 and 621 “Duke of Edinburgh” operated on 2 separate trains to Goolwa, before combining to form a double header for the run back to Mt Barker. We covered the train at a variety of locations including 621 being turned on the Mt Barker turntable in the evening with an atmospheric boiler blow down. We chased 621 operating 2 Southern Encounter workings in June providing spectacular sound and vision with 2 ascents of Philcox Hill, preparations at Mt Barker depot, to blow downs near the coal stage and over the Angus River at Strathalbyn. We return to SteamRanger in September to film a full days running with 621 on the Southern Encounter, beginning at the depot at Mt Barker before following it to a variety of locations along the line. At Victor Harbour, watch the loco being turned, then operating the Cockle Train to Goolwa and return. Later..

STEAM on 16mm in the SIXTIES

NSW 1969 In the sixties, when steam was still around on NSW railways, George Meyer, a well known American rail photographer, visited Australia to capture the scene on superb 16mm film. His film covered Sydney and the area around Fassifern and Newcastle in full colour. This 16mm film, professionally transferred by "Flying Spot Scanner" to broadcast standard tape, is the basis of this production. Featured on this show are the goods and coal trains of the era, (including 4 wheelers), Newcastle Expresses and the end-loading wooden suburban cars, with a variety of locos from the smallest to the biggest, together with loco yards, alive with steam locomotives of all types. See in glorious colour: Sydney's Darling Harbour goods yard, now long since gone, being shunted by 19 class 0-6-0s 1924, 1952, 1919 and 3026 tender type 4-6-0. 60 class 4-8-4+4-8-4 Garratts, single and double, or banked by 59 class 2-8-2. 59 class 2-8-2. QR Lineside 4 - Monto Loop
RSQ4ML

QR Lineside 4 - Monto Loop

The Monto loop was a result of competition between coastal railway centres, separate lines from Maryborough and Gladstone reaching the town in 1928 and 1931. Built mainly to access mineral resources, the loop saw mostly light traffic in agricultural produce. The loop was never used for diversion of main line traffic when the Maryborough-Gladstone line was blocked, because the section between Mungar and Mundubberra had light rail, sharp curvature, and steep grades. It could not accept main-line engines. The section from Gladstone to Monto was better built, but the ascent of the Dawes Range required no less than six tunnels, and a ruling grade of 1 in 33.Traffic was heaviest between Monto and Gayndah. The loop escaped closure in the 1960s, but now has no traffic, the branch being "redlined". ..
