This video contains 80 minutes of now historical footage of the single deck Sydney suburban electric trains that survived the general withdrawal of this type of rolling stock early in January 1992. Commencing with views of these trains on their last day of widespread service on Friday 10th January 1992, including a driver’s view from one of the four trains involved in the Harbour Bridge Farewell ceremony, the video features the few remaining single deckers working to Carlingford, Pippita and Chullora during 1992 & early 1993. A pair of redundant parcel vans that formed the occa-sional Equipment Recovery train that roamed the metropolitan network on weekends is followed, and a day is spent watching the uniquely painted “Sesqui” train running shuttles over the Harbour Bridge when it was closed for its 60th anniversary on Sunday, March 29th, 1992. Trams Without Wires
RSTWW

Trams Without Wires

Since 1983, France has installed over twenty tram and light systems, spectaculary reversing previous policy. The ninth to open, in Bordeaux in 2003, used a radical new current collection technology, called alimentation par sol, or feed through the ground; APS for short. Current is collected from twin feed rails slightly proud of the road surface by skates under the cars. Complex high technology safety measures eliminate the "live rail" accidents that dogged earlier surface-contact systems. Bordeaux' APS system is limited to areas of architectural or scenic merit; overhead wires are used elsehere. Specially-equipped five and seven section Alsthom Citadis cars are used. This successful system is due to be extended considerably. ..

The Great Orme Tramway
RSGOT

The Great Orme Tramway

The line is in two sections. The lower part is paved street trackage; the cable runs in an enclosed conduitaccessed by a slot. The upper section is an entirely on open ballast track, the exposed cables running over pulleys. Passenger transfer between sections halfway, passing through the winding house. The four cars are permanently fixed to the cables; they are started and stopped from the winding house. Signals from the car to winding house now use a buried induction cable beside the line. Despite competition from road and overhead cable, the cable line still operates every summer. It is now the only cable tramway in the British Isles. ..

Pilatus Bahn
RSPB

Pilatus Bahn

At a maximum gradient of 480 pro mille - 48%, or just under 1 in 2 - the Pilatusbahn is the steepest rack railway in the world. Built in 1889, to access the summit of Mt. Pilatus, near Luzern, this 800 mm gauge line climbs 1635m (5364 ft) in 4618m (2.87 miles). The steepness of the gradients dictated the adoption of the unique Locher rack system, which locks the train to the line and prevents derailment or capsize in extreme weather conditions. Oringinally steam-operated, it was electrified at 1550V DC in 1937. Trains run daily in summertime. This DVD was filmed using high quality cameras. All editing and  processing has been digital. The sound was recorded on location using professional quality microphones. There is no background music, and the extensive narration is confined to the maps and stills so that the sound of the trains at work is unmarred. ..

Melbourne's Tramways

Melbourne's Tramways

Melbourne is one of the world's great tram cities. Over 500 cars, some 70 years old and some brand new, work some 250 route km (160 route miles). In a clockwise progression around the system, many interesting features are picked out, as well as typical scenes. Captions are supplied for most locations. Melbourne's electric trams replaced an extensive cable network. The system expanded steadily in the 1920s and 1930s. After some stagnation, expansion resumed in the 1970s, when new cars also appeared. Two short railways were converted to "light rail" in 1987. A progressive engineering policy of widening clearances and easing sharp curves enabled the use of 9ft (2.743m) wide cars by the 1970s. The video includes footage of SW5/6/W7, Z1, Z3, A, and B classes as well as new Citadis and Siemens Combino cars in service. ..
