Along the Track in New South Wales - 1957 - 1972.

The Northern Line * (North from Broadmeadow) 1957 - 1972

This is the fourth in a series of archival DVDs looking at the railway trackside scene in Australia and some overseas  countries, at various times from the late 1950s to the 1970s.  The subject of the series is predominantly steam in normal, everyday service, before the final moves to full dieselisation and/or electrification.  Steam Times 4 looks at the NSW Northern Line (and some of its Branch Lines), north from Broadmeadow, from 1957 to 1972.

The Programme is divided into five parts: The first part looks at the very busy section of the Northern Line from Broadmeadow/Newcastle to Maitland.  The second part moves from the Newcastle suburban area to the more rural, but still busy stretch from Maitland to Singleton.

The third park looks at workings from Singleton to Werris Creek.  There is quite a variety of scenery and traffic, with vigorous locomotive working predominating.  The fourth part moves first of all to the north of Werris Creek, looking at, and listening to, energetic engine work in the New-England area; we then have a short interlude around Moree, to the far north-west of Werris Creek, where the working is much less energetic, but fascinating nevertheless.

The final part of Steam Times 4 starts right back near Maitland, from where the busy North Coast line makes its long sinuous, single track way to Brisbane.  We see a variety of working, both close to and far from where the line starts. The final three scenes in this part give us a glimpse of the picturesque Merriwa branch, one of the last lines in NSW to see steam working.

The following classes are seen at work: 12, 13, 17, 24, 30, 30T, 32, 35, 36, 38, 50, 53, 55, 59, 60, a Maritime Services Board 0-4-0 tank, and a DEB set!  Like all Trains Alive productions, there is no narration and no music in Steam Times 4; the only sounds are of the trains and the countryside they run through.  Scenes are numbered briefly and there are comprehensive background notes provided.

Original footage taken on Standard 8 film.
