Along the Track in New South Wales

The Southern Line: 1959 - 1969
The Illawarra: 1963
The Sydney Suburban Area: 1959 - 1974
Private Railways in NSW: 1957 - 1983

This is the third in a series of archival DVDs (with full sound!) looking at the railway trackside scene in Australia, and some overseas countries, at various times from the late 1950s to the 1970s and 80s.  The subject of the series is predominantly steam in normal, everyday service, before the final moves to full dieselisation and/or electrification.  Steam Times 3 looks mainly at the Southern Line (and some of its Branch Lines), but also at the Illawarra, Sydney Suburban area and Private Railways in NSW.

The Programme is divided into five parts: the first looks at “The Short South” (from Liverpool to Goulburn), an area with some speedy sections, but also lone 1 in 75 grades.  The second part features the “Deep South” (beyond Goulburn), looking mainly at operations well south of Goulburn, and including a number of branch line operations.  This is the area which, compared to most others, saw an early end to seam, and Steam Times 3 contains numerous shots taken in 1961, which was the last full year of predominantly steam working.  The third part takes a brief look at activities in the Illawarra and is followed by a longer part that features various workings, mainly passenger, in the Sydney Suburban area, including the Camden Line.  The fifth and last part portrays a variety of workings on three private railways: the Silverton in Broken Hill, Commonwealth Portland Cement at Portland and Coal and Allied (with other owners earlier on) in the Hunter area.

The following classes are seen at work in Steam Times 3: 20, 26, 30, 30T, 32, 36, 38, 44, 422, 50, 53, 55, 57, 57, A.I.S. locos, Silverton W and Y, and Coal and Allied 10 and R.O.D.

There is no narration and no music in this production; the only sounds are of the trains and the countryside they run through.  Scenes are numbered briefly and there are comprehensive background notes provides.
