Along the Track in New South Wales - 1958 to 1972.

This is the first in a new series of fully archival DVDs looking at the railway trackside scene in Australia and some overseas countries at various periods during the years 1958 to 1973.    The subject of the series is steam in normal, everyday service, before the final moves to full dieselisation and/or electrification.  Steam Times 1 looks at the ‘Short North’ in NSW from 1958 to 1972.

The Programme is divided into Three Sections:

The First looks at the area from Berowra to Wyong, with a special selection or rare pre 1960 shots on Cowan Bank and a look at the first changeover from steam to electric traction at Gosford in January 1960.  These shots are followed by a number of views between Gosford and Wyong, where there is very little in the way of grades or curves to hamper either passenger or goods trains.

The Second Section looks at the scene from Wyong to Wyee, an area of fast track, where both passenger and goods trains can work as speedily as conditions permit, but also where there are some grades on which heavy and/or fast train have to work hard.

After a short stay around Awaba, the Last Section moves to the area between Fassifern and Broadmeadow, incorporating the southern half of the Newcastle Suburban area.

The following classes are seen at work: 12, 17, 19, 30, 32, 32, 36, 38, 40, 44, 46, 50, 53, 55, 59 and 60 on a variety of trains, almost all of which are regular services.  There are locos just chuffing along with a local or the pick-up, at speed with the Flyer or a fast goods, or charging the grade from Warnervale, Fassifern, Cardiff or Adamstown.

There is no narration and no music in this DVD: the only sounds are of the trains and the countryside they run through.  Scenes are numbered briefly and there are comprehensive background notes provided.

Original footage taken on Standard 8 film.
