South African Railway Garratts - Part 3

  • $38.00

A 21 year review of all articulated steam types.

This review of the Garratt classes on the SAR, begins with extracts from a previous “SAR 150th Anniversary” video programme. The DVD series deals with all the articulated types to have seen service on the SAR, including Union Garratts, Fairlies and the Mallets. Courtesy Tom Kelcec and Goodheart Productions, some of the spectacular original and preserved extract footage of the Mallets in the USA is shown in order to give the viewer an idea what the Mallet era may have been like on the SAR itself.

This programme then brings the viewer extensive records of the various types of SAR “Cape Gauge” Garratts to have been captured on video in regular service or in preservation. The GF, GEA and GMA classes and various narrow gauge (2ft) locomotives feature predominantly here. In preservation with Transnet, we also have, GB, GF, GL, GMA/M and GO, plus their NRZ (Zimbabwe) classes 14A and 16A; finally, narrow gauge classes NGG11, 13, 16 and 16A in the Free State, kwaZulu Natal and Eastern Cape.

We thereafter  have and even more gripping footage of various operations spanning the entire period from 1991 to 2012, a full twenty one year period comprising various double headers and other combinations with regular tender locomotives such as classes 7A.15A, 19B, 19D and 24. This material has been recompiled from many of the Vidrail tour and “Roundabaout” programmes over this period for the viewer.

The series ends with the spectacular triple and quadruple combinations, organised at the Sandstone Estates narrow gauge complex, between 2006 to 2012.

This is, without any doubt, the most extensive South African Garratt devoted review currently available, and many of these operations (other than at Sandstone Estates) can never be recreated, since the majority of the preserved 1067mm (3ft 6in) locomotive fleet is unserviceable.

Produced by Jean Dulez this NINE HOUR - THREE PART DVD series brings the viewer an unparalleled 21 years’ worth of industrial and preserved Garratt action on both the 1067mm (3ft 6in) and 610mm (2ft) systems. There are 12 classes featured in action including much by way of double headed and even more multiple operations. All the various classes of articulated steam locomotives, to have seen service on the South African railways (SAR), are also briefly reviewed at the start of this series of DVDs.
