Rockhampton is located on the Queensland coast 639km from Brisbane. The Queensland railway system was unusal. Whereas Other states systematically developed lines radiating from the capital cities, Queensland's extreme decentralisation dictated a different pattern. The first railways ran inland from important coastal ports along the coastline, to mining and pastoral centres.

The earliest railway in the Rockhampton area was opened in 1867; but the East Coast line, connecting Rockhampton north to Cairns and south to Brisbane, was not completed until 1924. It rapidly developed into a major artery for both freight and passenger service, and remains extremely busy. Progressive upgrading has transformed a slow and rickety railway; major realignments have taken place, and some sections are suitable for 160 k.p.h (100 m.p.h.) Rockhampton itself sees heavy traffic daily. The 686km branch to Longreach supports electrified coal haulage from the Blackwater mine complex. The North Coast
electrification from Brisbane terminates here.

Rockhampton is served by the 160 k.p.h. electric Tilt Train service from Brisbane, plus passenger services from Brisbane to Longreach, Mt. Isa, Townsville and Cairns, including the Cairns diesel Tilt Train. Freight services are heavy and frequent; line capacity on the route to the north is fully utilised. Trains to and from the north traverse Denison St. for 2km, passing the old Archer Park station, which houses a preserved steam tram. In this production, electric locomotives, the tilt train, 1700, 2300, and 2800 class diesels are all seen in action. Filmed October 2000. All digital.
