Commencing in 1872, construction of the Napier section of the PNGL (Palmerston North Gisborne Line) faced many uphill battles.

Much of the landscape was dense vegetation and swampy lowlands and although in some parts was easy, in the later years of it’s construction, engineers were faced with deep valleys that needed spanning withlong viaducts.

Add to that the long depression of 1873-79 and the final engineering obstacle of the Manawatu Gorge, the fact that this line was completed in 1891 using pre 20th century techniques is a marvel in itself.

The rail link from Napier to the hub of Palmerston North is vital to New Zealand’s rail network, and vital to the Hawkes Bay economy. Napier is used for local exports and imports are distributed nation wide.

Local industries benefit from the ability of rail to be able to deliver large quantities of goods efficiently and timely. Four trains are timetabled to run across this line each week day, with up to six running if the need should arise, with an additional train running during the weekend.

The terrain is diverse and may be challenging for the trains, but makes an excellent backdrop for photographers.

This production covers modern railroading from Napier to Palmerston North, where the focus is on freight trains, marvels of engineering andclassic New Zealand scenery.

Run-by shots of full-length trains are included. Limited narration - the trains do most of the the talking.
