The Sunlander North of Townsville - Cab Ride and Line Side Views

A number of memorable events occurred in 1953. It was the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, and also the year Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mt Everest. Of more interest to railway enthusiasts however was Thursday 4th June when the first Sunlander service commenced out of Roma Street Station in Brisbane. It was Queensland’s premier passenger train service and was generally hauled by early classes of General Electric and English Electric diesel electric locomotives throughout the 1,681 kilometre journey between Brisbane and Cairns. In the very early days it was still being hauled by steam engines, particularly between Innisfail and Cairns. The journey took approximately 41 hours and 15 minutes compared with later times of 30 hours and 45 minutes. The carriages were of all steel construction fitted with automatic couplers and featured a comfortable smooth ride with air-conditioning, reclining seats, chilled water dispensers and onboard showers.

This video is a lineside and cab view showcase of the train during the last decade of its operation over the northern leg of the journey between Townsville and Cairns. The scenery changes from open sub-tropical terrain around Townsville to lush green mountains and vast sugar cane fields as the train weaves its way along the North Queensland coastline towards Cairns. Trains run north as 3C37 and south as 3936, and are seen being hauled by varying combinations of Clyde 2170, 2300, 2250, 2400, 2470 and 1720 class locomotives. The Sunlander is an impressive train to watch as it thunders past, and these scenes highlight the halcyon days of the locomotive hauled service. It was progressively replaced by Spirit of Queensland tilt train services from Monday 28th October 2013. Even though the name change ushered in an exciting new era of long distance passenger train travel in the Sunshine State, the classic traditional Sunlander will always be a class act to follow.
