Nimba - A Mountain of Iron

Construction of the 270 km Lamco railway. Nimba Range is a mountain chain extending in a southwest - northeast direction along the Guinea - Côte d’Ivoire - Liberia border. It reaches its highest elevation at Mount Nimba some 1,750 metres above sea level. Surrounded by lowland rain forest to the south and savanna to the north, the mountains are the source of the Nuon (Nipoué, Cestos) and Cavalla rivers, which form the Liberia - Côte d’Ivoire boundary. All three countries have set aside nature and forest reserves on the mountain slopes. The range has considerable mineral wealth; extensive iron ore deposits were mined by the Liberian American - Swedish Minerals Company (Lamco) after 1963, and exported via the 270km company railroad to the port of Buchanan. This is a 8mm, fully narrated film produced in 1963 by the Lamco organisation covering the construction of their 270 km mining railway and associated infrastructure. Mostly Colour fil..

British Railways - Transport Films 2

Train Time is the story of one railway day which begins and ends with an operating conference telephone-linked from end to end of Britain. The film tells how a sudden demand for extra locomotives in West Cornwall may affect the tinplate traffic from South Wales; how fish from the Scottish ports is rushed south to the markets; how coal wagons are sorted in Toton Marshalling Yard; how the movement of cattle from Ireland may affect enginemen's working in the Midlands; how London's evening rush to the suburbs is dealth with. Elizabethan Express ran from King's Cross Station, London to Waverley Station, Edinburgh, a distance of 393 miles. The Elizabethan, a summertime express does this journey in 6.5 hours non-stop - the longest daily non-stop in the world to be timed at over 60 mph. This film is about one of these runs, and the men behind the service: the people who planned it in the first place; the men who maintain the engines; the men who build the coaches; the ..

British Railways - Transport Films

Blue Pullman is a 1960 short documentary colour film directed by James Ritchie, which follows the development, preparation and a journey from Manchester to London on new British Rail Blue Pullman units. As with earlier British Transport Films, many of the personnel, scientists, engineers, crew and passengers were featured in the 20 minute film. It won several awards, including the Technical & Industrial Information section of the Festival for Films for Television in 1961. The film is also particularly noted for its score, by Clifton Parker, which, unlike the earlier Elizabethan Express is uninterrupted by any commentary. Terminus; John Schlesinger's B&W short reveals how democratising railways were. In 1961, everybody used the train; in a single day, the film catches vignettes from childhood, marriage, work, crime and punishment, old age, death. One could go practically anywhere by train, and Schlesinger knew that, to get on a train could change your life. Only two years..

British Railways - The Golden Age

Revisit British Railways during the era of nationalisation. For all its bad reputation today, the old British Railways transformed a devastated, war-ravaged ancient transport network into a system ready for the next century. Tomorrow being the only way forward, steam made way for diesel and electric, new up to date stations were constructed, and the nation’s first high-speed trains designed and built. This video includes footage the British Transport Films archive. ..

Cine film, analogue video footage and some still photography are used. A guest videographer is John Beckhaus supported by still photos, from John Ward in a short chapter on Brisbane’s trolleybuses. To support the Olympic Games, buses came to Sydney from statewide locations, the Australian Capital Territory, across all of Victoria, with vehicles from south-east Queensland and South Australia. In an era of standardization, never again will there be such a mixture of vehicle types and colour schemes all operating together. This is rare footage supported with detailed maps and documents to explain how it all worked. From 1 July 2017, a private operator took over the day-to-day operation of the NSW Newcastle government buses. The buses themselves and depots remain in government ownership. We take ..
