Auckland-based railfan, Wayne Ward, has traveled New Zealand videoing rail services, heritage excursions and special rail events. In 'Roaming the Rails,' Wayne introduces each item and allows the pictures and sound provide the action.
Mountains have become the destination in 'Return to KB Country' where Wayne tramped into remote viaduct locations on the Midland Line, between Springfield and Cass, to capture coal trains and the Tranz Alpine in the rugged and spectacular landscape. '3 Steamers on the Point' features three J-class locomotives triple-heading during the Glenbrook Vintage Railway's 2002 Festival of Steam.
Modern railroading is covered as Otago and Southland provide the backdrop for Toll Rail's numerous freight services. In May 1993, Steam Incorporated traveled the length of New Zealand with KA 945 and their heritage carriages that were chartered to Cadbury for a promotional tour. 2000 saw the Railway Enthusiasts' Society use DA 1429 on their Annual General Meeting excursion around the Auckland suburban area then north to Helensville.
One of the highlights of 2007 was the double-heading of As 663 and WAB 794 from Palmerston North to Raurimu and climbing the Spiral in total darkness. With a pair of clean Toll Rail locomotives on the head, Wayne follows the Genesis unit coal trains from Mount Maunganui to Rotowaro. We conclude with the 'Celebrated South Island Tea Kettle' or as its more commonly known, the Kingston Flyer.
