TA 101D ‘The Channel Tunnel: The Inside Story’ (DVD) 75 min $55.00
Tandem TV & Film Ltd (UK)
From cutting the first sod, through trials and tribulations to record-breaking tunneling, this is the story of the first major railway to be built in Britain (well, sort of!) since the British pioneering days of the 19th Century! Constructors of the Tunnel also built Le Shuttle which boasts the largest railway carriages of their kind in the world. ‘The Channel Tunnel: The Inside Story’ is designed for a wide audience, translating the technical jargon and achievements into everyday language. Commentary by Willie Rushton.
The ‘New Civil Engineer’ of 23 May 1991 wrote,
‘At all events the Channel Tunnel is going to be remembered not just as a civil engineering achievement, but a video achievement, just as the Forth Bridge is justly remembered for the quality of the photographic record made, and the Panama Canal for its pioneering use of cinematography.’
DARYL’s COMMENT: This is truly a superb record on how the Channel Tunnel was built. Definitely something you can watch more than once.

BO~3 THE IRON ROAD TO THE ISLES (DVD-R) 70 min $46.00
By Highball Productions
Join award winning
videographer Peter Crook on a magical journey by steam train through the
highlands of Scotland. See the lochs and the glens, the curved viaduct at
Glenfinnan, used in the Harry Potter movies. See the fishing port of Mallaig,
ride the ‘Jacobite’ steam train through the splendid, picturesque scenery of the
highlands on ‘the iron road to the isles’ and learn about Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Bonus Feature - Go Over the Sea to Skye and take a video tour of this beautiful
island.
Editor: This is more of a
travelogue than a ‘proper’ train DVD. A lot of the footage is shot from the
train and it really sets the train in the countryside and allows you to enjoy
the fantastic scenery. Of course there are line-side and station shots but
there is so much more – see just how beautiful the British Isles are!

BO~5 50 019 ‘Ramillies’ 90 min $38.00
SPA Films - UK
British Rail withdrew 50 019 ‘Ramillies’ from service in 1990 and the locomotive would almost certainly have been broken up for scrap had it not been for a far sighted group of dedicated preservationists who seeing further potential in the locomotive purchased her and have worked tirelessly to restore her to almost new condition. .... This is their story.
Filmed over 16 years, the story starts utilising Class 50 member's footage at Exeter Riverside. It covers the removal of ‘Ramillies’ from the Riverside Yard by road including the breakdown of the road transport tractor and the subsequent stranding of the load in the middle of Exeter City. The tractor unit is replaced but further delays are endured with the discovery of a broken link on the suspension of the trailer and then visits from council officials who are anxious about the height of the load under the M5 motorway bridges. Five years pass and the locomotive is now at Eridge in Sussex, this part of the film covers some of the remarkable work members have achieved to restore ‘Ramillies’. We also see ‘Ramillies’ running under her own power to Tunbridge Wells for again loading on to a road rig in preparation for her move to The Mid Norfolk Railway. All the loading on to the rig is covered, so if you have ever wondered how to get a 117 ton loco on to a low loader then watch this film. Finally we see ‘Ramillies’ at her new location on The Mid Norfolk Railway and take a trip with her along that line to Wymondham Abbey.

EU 9 STEAM ON THE FURKA MOUNTAIN RAILWAY (DVD) 55 min
$42.00
Eisenbahn Kurier
In July 2000, after many years of reconstruction, the Furka-Bergstrecke between Realp (Uri, Switzerland) and Gletsch (Wallis, Switzerland) was reopened. Finally you can climb up the beautiful Rhoneglacier by steam-traction. In 1982, after opening of the Furka-base tunnel, the mountain line was condemned for demolition and nowadays is run under private management by friends of the railway. They renovated numerous nostalgic carriages and Swiss steam locomotives which were over eighty years old, some brought back from Vietnam. From the clearing of snow in June to the shutdown in October, our camera accompanied the eventful running of this railway enterprise in a superb, picturesque and nearly untouched high-mountainous region. Surrounded by alpine flowers the train climbs up to 11.8% at its steepest sections and travels over bold curved viaducts. See also the folding bridge (dismantled for winter) over the "Steffenbach" and the 1847m long peak tunnel on Furkapass. colour ~ hifi sound ~ narrated

In 2006 the Simplon
tunnel celebrates its 100th anniversary. Measuring 19.8 km in length, the
structure lies at the heart of the important cross-Alpine railway line between
Lausanne/Spiez and Domodossola via Brig. 3 films have been compiled especially
for the centenary. The first is black & white and was produced in 1955. This
16 minute film was commissioned by SBB for the 50th birthday of the line. 25
years later SBB and BLS commissioned a 21 minute colour film portraying the
history and future of the line. These 2 documentaries from the archives of SBB
Historic are rounded off by a brand new production – a 46 minute account of the
Simplon today by Raphael Suder. Together, they provide a superb record of 100
years of railway history. In the past, iconic trains like the Simplon-Orient-Express
or the TEE used to cross the Alps on the Simplon route. Today the sleek
dual-system Cisalpino trains offer fast services between Switzerland and Italy.
The way goods trains are operated changed with the entry into the market of new
providers. In December 2007, the opening of the Lötschberg base tunnel will
raise the importance of the Simplon even further.
See these interesting and varied railway operations on the Simplon, with
fascinating helicopter shots showing the remarkable setting of the line in the
beautiful Alpine panorama between Lake Geneva and Lago Maggiore.

Technology and Practice
While steam locomotives have virtually disappeared from the European landscape they still exert a magic spell on us all, even those who never experienced them in actual service. This DVD now makes it possible to enjoy them in their full sound and glory in a new way; a way you will like. Steam technology is explained simply, the pictures tell the rest of the story. This title comprises 2 DVDs and has English narration. Includes fully detailed descriptions of all major cab components, plus the frame, boiler, tubes, smokebox etc etc.
This title was reviewed in Continental Modeller, July 2003. It stated in part:
This double DVD set looks at the theory and practice of the steam locomotive. The first disc concentrates on explaining the theory, and the second disc is mainly concerned with the practice, and shows a good variety of steam locos at work. The opening screen of the first disk offers a choice of four options: the basics, the boiler, the engine, and the chassis. The opening screen of the second disk has three choices: cab, driving, and epilogue. The Cab layout shows a typical back-head with all the controls: if the cursor is clicked on a feature, a label appears, double click on it, and you get a section of film explaining the working of that control, and the part of the machine it governs. High quality computer graphics are combined with relevant video clips to explain the technology and show the appropriate parts of the machine, and the effect of using the controls. Some sequences have clearly been recorded specifically to illustrate the points being made, while other images have been carefully edited from existing material. The features covered are firebox, injectors, water gauges, blower, steam pressure gauge, reverser, regulator, whistle and bell, lubricator, generator, steam heating, and brake system. The English version is clearly delivered and perfectly fluent. In certain sections, there is some backing music. For the running time alone, this program represents very good value. Highly recommended.
'567' Comment: This title is ideal for the person wanting to know how everything works on a steam locomotive and its intended purpose. A learning program which is very concise in its content.

In contrast to the many programs covering Swiss railways, the western Alps have received only scant attention.
In his film Pascal Bejui introduces you to the Mont-Blanc region. The plain, but simple title hides a rich diversity:
1. Tramway du Mont-Blanc - France's highest railway.
2. Mont-Blanc Express - the international metre gauge line.
3. The Montenvers Rack Railway - travel to the largest glacier in France.
4. The battle of the Diesel Rotary Snow-plow.
5. The Martigny – Châtelard Railway.
6. The little Trains of the Emosson Dam.
7. Preserved rolling stock of the Martigny - Châtelard.
Discover yourself that superlatives are not a trait reserved exclusively to Swiss metre gauge lines!
