on an historic journey through Texas as she pulls Burlington Northern Santa Fe's
Employee Appreciation Special. Starting in Ft. Worth, the train headed south
through Temple and on to Houston and Silsbee - a whole new territory for this
powerful 4-8-2 Mountain-type locomotive. The 1522 got a good workout, producing

the Texas Hills. She performed flawlessly, highballing over former Santa Fe
track at incredible speeds. You'll follow the 1522 on her travels for a total of
8 days, spotting railroad icons such as Tower 55, Tower 17, T&NO Junction, and
more. On the run out to Silsbee and back the Special traversed the former
Southern Pacific Sunset Route between Houston and Beaumont. The train passed
small towns and rolled through beautiful, rural landscapes. Crossing rivers,
stomping up hills, and sprinting across the countryside, the locomotive was a
sight to behold. Join us trackside for a fantastic show of steam railroading as

ATT 1 AT THE THROTTLE CAB RIDE VOLUME 1 147 min $40.00
THE SAN BERNARDINO SUBDIVISION: LOS ANGELES TO SAN BERNARDINO
With the camera secured to the front of an eastbound stack train and the scenic landscapes of the BNSF San Bernardino Subdivision stretching before you, you're 'at the throttle' and about to experience a train ride like no other! Beginning with an early departure on a beautiful spring day in 2008, you'll leave Hobart Yard, cautiously observing the 10-mile per hour speed limit until the entire train is on the mainline and the engineer can bring the heavy train up to speed. Running southeast to Fullerton, you'll get to observe the routing procedures that support the Amtrak Pacific Surfliners, westbounds freights, and Metrolink commuter trains that compete for track space. Moving east past the Fullerton Station, you'll head toward the horseshoe bend in Santa Ana Canyon. By the time you reach the San Bernardino Station enough daylight remains to give you a start onto the Cajon Sub to Devore. This has been no conventional cab ride; this has been an unobstructed view of the line that few people will ever experience! Welcome to Volume 1 of ‘At the Throttle!’

You'll depart Devore and then just east of Keenbrook you'll cross over onto the original line to Summit. It's shorter and steeper but your train has enough horsepower to conquer the 3 percent grade. Once past Summit, your train eases downgrade, clears the Upper Narrows and the scenic Lower Narrows, then makes good time streaking across the desert floor to Barstow. Along the way you'll meet westbound hotshots, spot third main track construction and signal installations, and get a totally unique perspective of the famous hotspots that make Cajon such a popular railfanning destination. Welcome aboard Volume 2 - you're ‘At the Throttle!’
MARIAS ACROSS MARIAS PASS 90 min $40.00
Stretched against the sunning
backdrop of Glacier National Park, Burlington Northern’s transcontinental
mainline climbs up and over the rugged Rocky Mountains. One scenic splendor
after another unfolds as long freight trains struggle up the mountain pass. It’s
the pre-merger days of the early 1990s and Pentrex is trackside to record the
battle of trains and nature. The grandeur of the mountains is almost
overwhelming as we explore the line from Whitefish, Montana to points east of
Browning. You’ll see trains snake their way through the tunnels and along
the banks of the wild middle fork of the Flathead River. Train after train
rumbles through forests of aspen and larch decked out in glorious fall colours
or struggles against winter’s storms. After crossing over the high bridges and
through the famous snow sheds, the trains work hard up the pass to crest the
summit. Marias Pass takes on a different look on the east slope. Wild,
desolate country with ever-present mountains marks the high plateau. You’ll see
trains cross over Two Medicine Bridge and struggle upgrade through Grizzley. The
solitude of Spotted Robe is broken as you watch a heavy grain train grind its
way up the grade.
Burlington Northern and Mother Natures combine to make this stretch of railroad
a place to be visited time and time again. No matter how often you’ve been here
before, you won’t want to miss this vision of magnificent Marias Pass.

VR 074 Imperial Valley Sugar Beet Trains - ‘The Ending of An Era’ 60 min $40.00
In the early hours of July 17, 1993, Southern Pacific’s last sugar beet train from the Imperial Valley pulled into the station at Guadalupe, California. The nearby sugar mill would soon be shut down after nearly 100 years of operation and SP’s sugar beet trains, with their familiar wooden gondolas, would no longer make the run from the southeast corner of the state to the central coast. Our journey begins in the lush farmlands of the Imperial Valley, 420 rail miles away from the Holly Sugar Mill at Betteravia. Watch as sugar beets are harvested, transported to receiving stations, and then loaded into the wooden gondolas, with their friction bearing axles, that made SP’s unit beet trains so unique. The loaded trains of up to 100 steel and wooden cars hauling 10,000 tons of sugar beets depart El Centro, heading toward Taylor Junction in L.A. and along the Coast Line to their destination in the Santa Maria Valley. Helper units are often added for the push over Beaumont Hill. At Taylor Junction, we’re invited into the cab of SD40 7349 on the point of a 3-unit lashup that includes two SD45s. The cab ride to Guadalupe features tunnels, cuts, and blue Pacific Ocean views as well as meets and passes with intermodal hotshots and Amtrak trains. At the interchange yard in Guadalupe, the Santa Maria Valley Railroad’s new GP-9 arrives to transfer the gondolas to the Holly Sugar Mill. Then we’re treated to a complete tour of the refining process, from unloading to washing, pulping, purifying, drying, and bagging the granulated sugar. Though the mill has since been partially demolished and SP’s sugar beet trains are a thing of the past, you can still enjoy one of the most interesting railroading stories ever shown.

TAC Northwest Doubleheader Steam - Tacoma to Everett with SP 4449 and UP 844! 105 min + 50 min Bonus Freight Action $40.00
*** WIDESCREEN FORMAT ONLY ***
On May 18 and 19, 2007, Union Pacific 844 and Southern Pacific 4449 steam locomotives made history by double-heading for the first time ever between Tacoma and Everett, Washington. This historic event, was a joint operation by the UP Railroad and BNSF Railway, See Friday’s private excursion to and from Tacoma and Everett as well as Saturday’s round-trip public excursion, the Puget Sound Steam Special. Follow the engines on their double-headed return trip from Tacoma to Portland. We also chased UP 844 on its way back home, capturing great footage of it through the Columbia River Gorge, flashing past beautiful Multnomah Falls, and steaming over the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon. These powerful Northern-type locomotives switched point position at Everett on both days of the Tacoma-Everett runs. You’ll have ample opportunity to see each of them looking great and leading the train of matched Armour yellow UP cars. Cool, overcast weather only served to make their billowing clouds of steam and smoke even more dramatic! The spectacular scenery along the Puget Sound created a perfect backdrop for great steam action. See the locomotives thundering across Salmon Bay Bridge, rolling through Sunnyside Beach and Harbor View Parks, and racing along the flowing curves of the Sound. The line between Tacoma and Everett is a busy double-track mainline owned by BNSF with UP trackage rights. This allowed us to see interesting motive power, such as SD40-2s, heading a variety of freight trains there, as well as on the trip from Tacoma to Portland and through the Columbia River Gorge.
DVD Features: Chapter Menu. Narration On/Off. Widescreen (16:9) Format. No region code; can be played in any NTSC DVD player worldwide. Released on DVD by Pentrex 2007
ALS Steel Rails, Midnight Sun - Summer on the Alaska Railroad, VOL.1 60 min $40.00
Stretching from Seward to Fairbanks, rising from tidewater level up 2,360 feet to the Continental Divide, and running nonstop during sunless days and perpetual twilight, the Alaska Railroad is a hard-working operation that serves a land of extreme weather and incredible beauty. In the mid-1990s, filmmaker Patrick Hunstiger captured the fascination of the Alaska Railroad in a 3-part series on video. In 1993, the Alaska Railroad could field up to 17 trains covering up to 3,300 train miles in any given 24-hour period. These included two passenger extras; overnight freights and freight expresses; oil tanker, unit coal, and rock trains; work extras; and others. The AR's all-GM locomotive fleet, which sported three different colour schemes, was made up of GP-40-2s, GP-49s, GP-38-2s, GP-35s, GP-7s, and MP-15s. Cabooses could still be seen at the ends of some trains. After a brief look at a derailment earlier that spring, follow the operations of the line starting at 7am on a busy June day and carry on into the evening, ending with a meet illuminated by the midnight sun at 1am . The trains are dispatched from Anchorage under Track Warrant Control and you'll view the dispatcher's display boards to see siding and train status in between catching the action at Eklunta, Matanuska, Talkeetna, Broad Pass, Healy, Clear Site, Nenana, and other locations. Highlights include a unit coal train pulled by 6 matched GP-49s, a passenger extra at Denali Park, action on the tall trestle spanning Hurricane Gulch, and of course the incredible skylines of craggy, snow-capped mountains reaching up from floors of emerald green forests! As you see the trains, hear the dispatcher talking to them, as Track Warrants are issued and information exchanged. Produced by Mind's I Productions in 1993. DVD released by Pentrex 2007.
ALF WHERE TRAINS FLY & EAGLES SOAR - Seward and Whittier S/div on the Alaska Railroad, VOL.2 45 min $40.00
The Alaska Railroad series continues with a fascinating look at operations on the Seward and Whittier Subdivisions during the summer of 1994. We’ll treat you to a 3-day tour of the lines between Anchorage, Whittier and Seward, trackage that runs past the incredibly scenic vistas of Turnagain Arm and Kenai Fjords National Park. The route from Seward to Portage takes the trains over the crest of Kenai at 1,060 feet, up 3 percent grades, and through 5 tunnels! Traffic on the Whittier and Seward Subs consists of Anchorage-to-Seward passenger trains; the Whittier Shuttle carrying passengers, cars, and trucks; unit coal trains; and freights that serve the rail barges. These are led by GM diesels including GP35s and GP38s, GP40s and GP49s, plus a few surprises such as an F7-B and a Budd RDC. You’ll also see many cabooses at the ends of these trains. The highlights of our show feature the Port of Whittier where the Trainmaster juggles 10 trains and 2 rail barges against 20-foot tides with only one GP30 switch engine, a passenger train made up of former SP bi-level coaches, rides through the tunnels aboard the Shuttle, a 6-unit lash-up of 5 GP49s and one GP40 leading a heavy coal train, maintenance-of-way equipment, and a special military move. But not to be overlooked is the astonishing beauty of red sunsets, towering snow-draped mountains, and sea green glaciers that are backdrops to the silhouettes of these trains. The Alaska Railroad serves a land of incredible beauty, a place where trains fly and eagles soar!Produced by Mind's I Productions in 1994. DVD released by Pentrex 2007.
ALW GIANTS IN THE DARK - WINTER on the Alaska Railroad, VOL. 3 60 min $40.00
The third in our 3-volume DVD series
about the Alaska Railroad brings you a view of Alaskan railroading like no
other, for it carries you along the rails in the dead of winter, when
temperatures are minus 30 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit and you’re lucky if you see
five hours of daylight. Photographer Patrick Hunstiger set up his studio lights
and cameras to capture this incredible action in 1994. Now, with this new DVD
release from Pentrex, you can experience powerful diesels challenging the cold,
snow, and darkness, guiding freight and passenger trains through the frozen
frontiers of the Alaskan wilds.
Winter alters the way the Alaska Railroad does business. A busy summer week of
up to 100 trains a week will drop to 25 during the winter. However, the
spectacular drama of railroading in Alaska is undiminished. GP40-2s, GP49s, a
GP30, F7-B, E8-B, and MP15 are seen spewing show from the rails, sliding through
the darkness while snow flurries cover the cabs, and hauling their trains past
ice clogged-bays and jagged white peaks. Approaching the Alyeska Ski Resort in
Girdwood aboard the Ski Train is a magical sight for the mountain is lit for
night skiing, but for the most part what you’ll see is the bitter cold, the
heavy storms, and the dangers facing the men and equipment in a land of
perpetual darkness. It’s an extraordinary insight into a type of railroading
that few dare to face.

E-UNITS - ALONG THE RACETRACK
60 min $40.00
Once leading the country’s finest passenger
trains on high-speed schedules, the last remaining fleet of Electro-Motive
E-units worked during their later years pulling commuter trains in Chicago.
Pentrex filmed these timeless machines in the early 1990s, capturing their sleek
lines and throaty exhaust in exciting line-side action and thrilling cab ride
footage just before they were retired from Metra duty.
Climb up into the cab of BNE-9 #9914 and ride the entire line from Chicago’s
Union Station out to Aurora. Watch as the engineer skillfully brings the machine

you’ve never seen it before! The afternoon Dinky Parade, as the
railroaders call it, is a dispatcher’s nightmare, with train after train
scheduled for action. The route to Aurora is filled with curves, bridges, and
scenic stations and many thrilling meets occur as you speed down the
'racetrack.' For a nostalgic look at rare power actively still at work and the

CASS
CASS SCENIC RAILROAD
52 min $40.00
Each spring, the Cass Scenic Railroad in
West Virginia opens its tourist season with a special event known as the Cass
Railfan Weekend. Trains that aren’t regularly a part of the season’s schedule
are operated then to the delight of riders and photographers. Pentrex takes you
back to 1990 to experience the extra runs and excitement of that year’s Railfan
Weekend and discover why Cass draws crowds back year after year. A parade
of steam opens the event with a spectacular display. Three Shay locomotives,
Numbers 2, 3 and 4, run side-by-side down the triple tracks, spewing great
billows of steam and thrilling the crowd with their antics. Then the Shays
triple-head to Bald Knob at the top of Black Allegheny Mountain with a passenger
train in tow, followed closely by a vintage log train pulled by the railroad’s
Heisler locomotive. The Shays make numerous run-bys as they struggle up
the daunting eleven percent grades of the mountainside. You’ll ride in the cabs
of several as the firemen work intensely to keep the hungry engines fueled with
shovel after shovelful of coal. The locomotives’ intricate systems of shafts,
flywheels, and gears are seen close up as they strain to pull the trains uphill.
Cass Scenic has it all: unusual locomotives, vintage cars, and fabulous scenery.
Here’s your chance to enjoy it at its best!

CHINAST
CHINA STEAM SPECTACULAR
148 min $40.00
Imagine thousands of steam locomotives in
everyday use, rolling through lands of stunning beauty. That was steam
railroading in China in 2001 when this exciting documentary was filmed. Much of
it is hauntingly similar to the American railroads of the 1930s-1950s. All of it
is fascinating. Join our tour of six unique sites and see why steam in China may
be the greatest railroad show on earth!
We begin on legendary Jing Peng Pass with its 40 miles of tunnels, 2% ruling
grade, horse shoe curves, and spiral bridges entirely serviced by double-headed
2-10-2 QJ class locomotives. Next we take you to Daban where the entire fleet of
100 QJ's are serviced. Their resemblance to Union Pacific or NYC locomotives,
with smoke box deflectors, Boxpok driving wheels, and large smokebox-mounted
headlights, is remarkable. In the coal mining region of Tiefa, a fleet of thirty
2-8-2 SY class locomotives pull fast commuter trains with amazing frequency. Our
camera catches the action there near a busy double diamond junction. The
Dahiuchang Limestone Quarry near Beijing is an enchanting narrow gauge steam
line where we'll view endless strings of tiny ore cars pulled by miniature
locomotives. At Anshan, we are granted rare access into one of the world's
largest steel mills. It operates its own fleet of forty 2-8-2's and the activity
level is incredible. Finally, we'll witness the awesome brute strength of three
2-8-2's straining full throttle up the 3-1/2 percent grade to the Chengde steel
mill complex. This line has it all: steep curves, rock cuts, narrow tunnels, and
terrific rural scenery.

CIRCUSAD
CIRCUS TRAIN ADVENTURE
112 min $40.00
(LIMITED SUPPLY)
Have you ever
wondered what it would be like to ride aboard a Circus Train? Here
is your chance to find out!
From 2001 to 2005, while Kevin Venardos was Ringmaster for the Ringling
Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, his father would join him aboard the Circus
Train at every opportunity, riding from coast-to-coast and recording his
journeys from a totally unique vantage point—the vestibule of the Ringmaster’s
car! The resulting footage allows you to discover what it’s like to travel
aboard the Blue Unit Circus Train and view the passing countryside just as if
you were a member of the crew!
Your journey begins at Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania on the trek to Wichita Falls,
Texas. From there you continue to west to Tucson and Southern California. After
visiting the San Diego area, you’ll head toward the Pacific Northwest, traveling
along the Surf Line, enjoying gorgeous scenery through the Feather River Canyon,
on Puget Sound, and along the Deschutes and Columbia Rivers. Returning east,
you’ll visit Albany, Charleston, Worcester, Cambridge, Nashua, North Haven,
Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Granite City, and more.
Along the way, you’ll learn about how the Blue Unit Circus Train operates. Its
58 cars haul personnel, animals, equipment, and supplies. Everything the Circus
uses, shows, or sells must be carried aboard the mile-long train. You’ll see
elephants being off-loaded for water breaks, tour the Ringmaster’s private
quarters, and learn what it’s like to be a passenger on this traveling city.
Although the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus runs the largest
privately-owned train in the country, the locomotives used to power the trains
are provided by the host railroads over which the train travels, such as CP
Rail, Norfolk Southern, BNSF, and Union Pacific. There’s some exotic motive
power to be seen here too, including Wisconsin Central and Conrail.
Most of the scenes are taken from the vestibule, but there are a few fascinating
run-bys that show the Blue and Red Unit trains at interesting locations such as
on Tehachapi Loop and street running in Anaheim. You’ll also see many of the
yards where the train sections are placed during performances and watch speeding
freights whip past your nose while your train is waiting in the siding. Every
minute is filled with some new experience in this entertaining view of America
by rail from aboard the Circus Train!

Cutting through the Cascade Mountains, the river slices through an 80-mile stretch known as the Columbia River Gorge where the basalt mountains tower up to 4,000 feet above the water. Nearby dormant volcanoes such as Mount Hood and Mount Adams add to the incredible beauty of the Gorge area. Following the north bank of the river between Vancouver and Pasco, Washington is Burlington Northern Santa Fe's Fallbridge Subdivision. This is a prized site for railfans, offering spectacular vistas and nonstop railroading. Journey from Vancouver east to Maryhill along this scenic route and experience the variety of trains and motive power that ply this famous line. Enjoy scenes of Amtrak's Empire Builder and Talgo train, Swift RoadRailers, bare-table trains, trash trains, manifests, and unit grain trains. Motive power includes BNSF locomotives in Heritage I paint; a matched set of GE Dash 9s in Heritage II, pure sets of BN green power, and rare GP50s in classic Santa Fe blue-and-yellow paint. Also seen are SD40-2s, SD75s, GP38s, GP38-2s, B40-8s, B40-8Ws, and Dash 8-40CWs. The line is dotted with tunnels. You see many meets and great action over the swing bridge between Portland and Vancouver. Produced 2005
UPCRG COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE ~ VOL.2 : UNION PACIFIC'S PORTLAND SUBDIVISION 138 min $40.00
Climbing gently from the tidewater ports near Portland, Oregon is the Columbia River Gorge - a wide,
flat-water river passage that provides access to the inland agricultural regions of Washington and Oregon and divides the two states along most of their border. This is unparalleled beauty that hosts two
railroad lines: BNSF to the north and UP along the southern shore. Vol. 1 of this title explored the BNSF side of the Gorge, heading east from Vancouver, Washington to the arid desert mountains near the John Day Dam. In Volume 2, we head back west toward Portland following UP's Portland Subdivision. Visit many of the region's railfanning spots, such as Biggs, Celilo Park, The Dalles, Memaloose State Park, Mosier, and Hood River with the Mount Hood Scenic Railroad. Travel through the Viento State Park area to Wyeth, Cascade Locks, Bonneville Dam, and the spectacular Multnomah Falls. At Troutdale, the mainline splits into two routes to Portland and we'll visit the junction there before heading into the city. Trains include Canpotex unit potash trains, Spokane International mixed freights, container, grain, trailer, and stack trains, and Amtrak's Pioneer. Motive power varies from SD40-2s to SD60Ms, SD70Ms, leased SD90MACs, Dash 40-CW,
AC4400-CW, GE AC6000, Geeps, and more. CP, BNSF, and C&NW power also make appearances. These images were captured from the mid 1990s to the early 2000s.
VR016 DONNER PASS ~ Southern Pacific's Sierra Crossing 60 min $40.00
Donner
Pass…the name evokes daunting obstacles with good reason. Steep grades and seven
months a year of winter weather put a railroad’s resources to the test. Yet the
need to transport goods over the Sierras produces a nonstop parade of trains
over this famous line, and that was especially true in 1988 when Video Rails
captured incredible Southern Pacific action over Donner Pass.
Starting at the classification yards in Roseville, California, you’ll follow
Southern Pacific’s trains up and over “The Hill.” SP’s 6-axle SD40s, SD40T-2s,
SD45s, and SD45T-2 tackle 138 miles of up to 2.4 percent grades. Up to 11 units
are needed for the climb. The standard arrangement for these 10,000-ton trains
is 4 by 6, with four engines leading and 6 mid-train helpers, but you’ll also
see long trains with six units leading, six mid-train helpers, and an
end-of-train helper. Cabooses are also seen in use here. At Colfax, you’ll see
helpers being added to the front and rear of the trains. This is also a stopping
point for Amtrak’s twice-daily California Zephyr, several of which are
seen with private cars trailing. You’ll follow these trains to Alta, Blue
Canyon, Emigrant Gap, Yuba Gap, Cisco, Norden and the “Big Hole,” a 2-mile long
tunnel that runs directly under Donner Pass. Special highlights of this show
include rare films of the line’s construction, footage of the trapped City of
San Francisco Train 101 at Yuba Pass in 1952, snow fighting equipment with
steam powered rotaries pushed by Cab Forwards and other steam power, and
chilling views of 1980s railroading through winter blizzards. The scenery is
spectacular and the railroading is as intense as it gets when Southern Pacific
tackles Donner Pass! Produced by Video Rails 1988. Released on
DVD by Pentrex 2007
ETOP THE EAST BROAD TOP 108 min $40.00
The Oldest
Narrow Gauge Line Still Operating in the US!
In 1997, when this show was
originally filmed, the East Broad Top Railroad was the oldest narrow gauge line
still in operation in the US and the last original narrow gauge railroad in
existence east of the Mississippi River. Most of the original track remained
intact. Historic artifacts lined the route as if caught in a time warp. Our tour
of the railroad found abandoned freight cars, deserted yards, stations, tunnels,
water tanks, and bridges along the old right-of-way. Journey with us to
the mountains of southern Pennsylvania to learn about the East Broad Top’s rich
heritage. Then take to the rails to see the line as an excursion operation.
Experience the thrill of riding in the cab of a Mikado-type locomotive and
witness the spectacular beauty of steam engines running on clear, cold, October
days. A special railfan weekend has the East Broad Top running all available
equipment, including doubleheaded steam trains, freights, and the EBT’s M-1
motorcar. See for yourself why the East Broad Top is one of railroading’s
national treasures!
EWISC EARLY AMTRAK ACROSS WISCONSIN 60 min $40.00
On May 1, 1971, Amtrak became Wisconsin’s rail passenger carrier. Passenger service along the Burlington Northern’s Mississippi River Route ended as did all service on the Chicago & North Western. Famous train names such as the Milwaukee Road’s Hiawathas, C&NW’s Streamliners, and Burlington Northern’s North Coast Limited disappeared. When Amtrak began, only the Empire Builder and Chicago-to-Milwaukee corridor service were spared, and the Builder was rerouted from the BN onto the Milwaukee’s Twin Cities line.
By November, 1971, Amtrak was ready for some new Wisconsin trains. Added were Hiawatha trains to the Twin Cities; North Coast Hiawatha trains to Seattle via Southern Montana; and St. Louis service through Chicago to Milwaukee. Things were looking up for Wisconsin’s rail passenger service!
The first vestiges of Amtrak paint slowly appeared in 1972 and in 1973 there were brand new Amtrak engines. However, mismatched ‘Rainbow’ consists were still the rule. GM&O heavyweight parlor cars often appeared as did Denver, Kansas City and California Zephyr Silver dome-observation cars. Soon the E and F locomotives would disappear forever, but in these vintage years they still dominated the trains. Early Amtrak Across Wisconsin follows Amtrak from the Twin Cities to Southern Wisconsin in the years 1971-73. Locations include such railroading hot spots as St. Croix Junction south of St. Paul, La Crosse, and Duplainville Tower west of Milwaukee. There are scenic views along the Mississippi River and many photo locations in the metro Milwaukee area. The Amtrak trains you will see include:
** The Empire Builder ** The Hiawatha
** The North Coast Hiawatha ** The Abraham Lincoln
Also included are views of pre-Amtrak trains along the Burlington Northern’s now freight-only Mississippi River Route, the Milwaukee Road’s commuter Cannonball, and many freights on the Milwaukee, BN, and SOO Lines. The 1972 and 1973 Schlitz Brewing Circus Trains appear. Finally, we see Amtrak’s City of New Orleans, South Wind, Super Chief, and others in the metro Chicago area. You’ll find great variety in this look at Early Amtrak Across Wisconsin! Produced by Pentrex on DVD 2007

PCCF SOUTHERN PACIFIC CAB FORWARD COLLECTION 90 min + 15 min Bonus $50.00
The Complete Story of Southern Pacific's Mighty 4-8-8-4 Articulated Locomotives!
Three Years in the Making! The Most Comprehensive Coverage of Cab Forwards Ever Assembled!
In the tradition of excellence seen in ‘Union Pacific Big Boy Collection’ and ‘Union Pacific Streamliner Collection’ comes this brand-new production! For nearly 47 years, the Southern Pacific Railroad relied upon its massive AC-type steam locomotives to haul freight and passenger trains throughout California and neighbouring states. Built to provide the power and flexibility demanded by the mountainous passes they traversed, these giants were
constructed with their cab in front of the boiler, thus earning them the name Cab Forwards. The last Cab Forward revenue train ran in 1956, after which all but one were scrapped. From then on, film coverage of these AC-class engines was eagerly sought, hard to locate, and highly prized. Now, after years of research, Pentrex has assembled an awesome collection of footage and still images of Southern Pacific AC-1s through AC-12s spanning the years 1927 to 1956.
See Cab Forwards in service on the Overland Route, the San Joaquin Line, the Sunset Route, the Coast Route, the Shasta Route, and the Modoc Line. Thrill to incredible images of Cab Forwards in the snow, on grades, bridges, and scenic valleys; running with mid-train and rear-end helpers; teamed with Black Widow
F-units and GS-class helpers; and in meets with other Cab Forwards. The locomotives shown include nearly every class of Articulated Consolidation SP rostered: the Baldwin-built Cab Forwards and the Lima-built 3900 class AC-9s. Historic stills of the original Cab Forwards, the Baldwin-built MC, MM, and AM class engines, are also featured. Plus, author Dr. Bob Church and photographer Stan Kistler provide insightful insiders' views. This is the most comprehensive record of the legendary Cab Forwards ever presented on film and it belongs in every railfan's collection!
RATON RATON PASS ~ King Coal, The Chief, and the ‘BALJ’ 90 min $40.00
Santa Fe’s line across the summit of Raton Pass in northern New Mexico is the railroad’s highest mountain pass and one of its most challenging. The torturous climb, stunning landscapes, and high-horsepower diesels added up to one of the best shows in railroading. See the complete story of Santa Fe operations on Raton Pass. Enjoy the action as loaded coal trains are split and lugged across the grade in two sections behind red and silver Warbonnet Super Fleet diesels. Three units pull and three more push, throttles wide open, lifting the loads over the pass. Witness the struggle of brute horsepower as Santa Fe’s manifest H-BALJ diesels dig in and grind their way up the mountain. Ride in the cab of an AMD-103 as Amtrak’s Southwest Chief high-speed streamliners are brought to a crawl contending with Raton’s 3.5 percent grade. There are surprises in store for the crew on this trip, especially when the train stalls on the steep climb! Onboard scenes, detailed maps, action-filled run-bys, interesting motive power including Dash 8-40CSs, Amtrak Dash-8s, and a new C44-9W, and glorious vistas make this one railroading adventure you’ll want to savour again and again.

SUN2 SUNRISE / SUNSET 2 ~ A DAY AT ROCHELLE, ILLINOIS 60 min $40.00
Trains rattle across the diamonds at Rochelle, Illinois, where the double tracks of the Union Pacific Railroad and the double tracks of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks intersect. Pentrex cameras set up before dawn at Rochelle on this busy day in 1999 to record every passing train from sunup to sundown, over eleven hours. An unending parade of intermodal, coal, and manifest trains flow past our cameras, headed by a vast array of motive power representing most modern locomotive types. Train symbols and destinations are shown for all movements across these former Chicago & North Western and Chicago, Burlington & Quincy diamonds. This busy spot draws railfans from around the world like a magnet. To cope with the growing numbers of eager fans, the community of Rochelle constructed a unique railroad park complete with covered pavilion. It was an instant success, but not without obstacles, as you’ll hear from the crusader who fought great odds to make it a reality. Join us for a day at Rochelle where trains just keep on rolling past the pavilion. It’s a fascinating location and an amazing story that’s turned Rochelle into a railfan hot spot on the Midwestern prairie!

SUN3 SUNRISE / SUNSET 3 ~ CINCINNATI 90 min $40.00
The
third volume on our popular “Sunrise/Sunset” series takes you to the busy
triple-track mainline at Cincinnati, Ohio, where 12 routes radiating in and out
of town are squeezed through a funnel called Winton Place. Here CSX, Norfolk
Southern, Indiana & Ohio, and Amtrak trains compete for signals and switches,
three-way meets are a regular occurrence, and directional running puts trains on
competitors’ rails to ease the congestion! Pentrex set up in the pre-dawn
hours of June 28, 2000 to capture 15 hours worth of action from sunrise to
sunset. Among the many interesting moves that came our way were a CSX special
passenger train, steel and coal trains, the Juice Train, Triple Crown trains,
and a working Loram Rail Grinder. We recorded 58 trains, many with a fascinating
array of motive power. CSX presented an incredible variety of diesels, with
numerous units on lease, and post-merger Conrail power was in use on both CSX
and NS. Train symbols and numbers are given for all movements showing
where freights originated and where they’re headed. Plus, a schematic drawing
and explanation of the signal system shows just how this busy junction is
operated. If variety is what you want in your railroad entertainment, this show
will exceed your expectations! Produced by Pentrex

SUN4 SUNRISE / SUNSET 4 ~ FULLERTON 120 min $40.00
At the Fullerton Station in Southern
California, Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliners, Metrolink commuter trains, BNSF
freights, Locals, and other trains glide past the platforms one after the other,
sometimes with mere minutes between arrivals and departures. Fullerton is a
haven for railfans and photographers and we’ll show you why!
Pentrex camera crews set up to capture the action at this busy location on a
beautiful Fall day in 2007. During the 12 hours from dawn to dusk, over 60
trains passed the station and we filmed them all. Amtrak Pacific Surfliners
running between Los Angeles and San Diego are seen throughout the day. Amtrak’s
Southwest Chief makes a daily stop here. During the morning and afternoon peak
rush hours, Metrolink turns into a nonstop parade of trains carrying commuters
between Los Angeles and Oceanside or Riverside. The traffic is just as heavy for
BNSF freights, with plenty of doublestacks plying these rails. There are
surprises, too, such a 12-unit power transfer, maintenance of way, and
interesting local freights.
Fullerton Station is located on the BNSF San Bernardino Subdivision twenty-five
miles east of Los Angeles. Fullerton Junction, where Metrolink’s Orange
Subdivision splits off, is just east of the platform. The traffic on these two
Subs keeps the station’s three tracks in constant use, making this area an
exciting hot spot. Join Pentrex for a unique look at a favorite railroading
landmark: Fullerton, California — from Sunrise to Sunset!

EMPIRE EMPIRE BUILDERS TO MILWAUKEE 50 min $40.00
Privately run intercity passenger service in Milwaukee was a thing of the past by early 1971. The Federal government had formed Amtrak to remove the burden of passenger service from the railroads and insure that core passenger routes remained active. Direct rail service was now available all the way to Seattle, but one could no longer travel to Green Bay! All passenger service on C&NW rails was gone, but Amtrak did pick up some Chicago-Milwaukee trains over Milwaukee Road rails. These new trains looked different, too. Amtrak paint was months away and its first units were made up of mismatched heritage cars and engines that earned them the nickname ‘Rainbow’ trains (BN green, GN orange and blue, Milwaukee yellow, Burlington silver, NP greens, and others). Their classic motive power included E-9s, F-3s, F-7s, and F-9s. Empire Builders to Milwaukee takes you back to the six months preceding and following the start of Amtrak service in Milwaukee. You will view the Morning Hiawatha and the C&NW bi-level Streamliners during their last winter and spring of operations as well as Amtrak’s new Empire Builder and Chicago-Milwaukee corridor service. Also making appearances are freights (many pulled by venerable GP35s and GP9s) on the Milwaukee Road and Soo Line, the commuter Cannonball, and specials including Amtrak’s Turbo Train on its national tour and the Great Circus Train of 1971. These exciting scenes were filmed at Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, Duplainville, Brookfield, Elm Grove, Wauwatosa, Oak Creek, West Bend, and other Milwaukee metro areas. There’s plenty to enjoy in this fascinating tribute to Amtrak’s early Empire Builders! Produced by Pentrex 2006

HOT RAILS THROUGH THE TWIN CITIES RAILROADING
105 min $40.00
Sizzling action – that’s railroading in
the Twin Cities in 1998 when this show was filmed. Minneapolis/St. Paul hosts
eight different railroads plus Amtrak passenger trains. Burlington Northern
Santa Fe, Union Pacific, Canadian Pacific, Twin Cities & Western, Minnesota
Commercial, Wisconsin Central, and the I&M Rail Link all operate here. These
rails are kept highly polished by cross-town transfers, local freights, yard
jobs, and road trains!
Experience the action at the hottest locations. University Avenue, Division
Street, and Dayton’s Bluff at Hoffman Avenue are extensively covered. Shortline
Hill, where trains strain to lift heavy tonnage out of the river valley, the
NBSF mainline through St. Paul, and Wisconsin Central out of Shoreham provide
plenty of action, with train meets and multiple trains underway.
Steam is on the rails in the Twin Cities. You’ll spot Milwaukee Road #261
pulling an outbound excursion. Then it’s on the Minnesota Commercial where many
of their unusual locomotives are hard at work. MC owns a unique fleet of old
Alco and EMD museum pieces that will take you back to an earlier period.
Tremendous variety and sheer volume make the Twin Cities a railfan’s dream come
true and it’s captured here for your enjoyment!

KANSAS CITY SOUTHERN
80 min $40.00
Step back to 1990 and tour the entire
Kansas City Southern system from Kansas City, Missouri to Port Arthur, Texas and
over the former Louisiana & Arkansas line from New Orleans to Shreveport and
across the Texas Division towards Dallas. Thrilling action on the KCS reveals
heavy coal and grain trains snaking through the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas
as helpers shove hard on the rear. Manifest freights are seen grinding their way
over the summit of Rich Mountain. Elsewhere locals are racing against the clock
before their time expires while yard switchers toil at their unending tasks.
Every class of engine running on the KCS in early 1990 is seen in action here.
Its well-known white paint scheme was transitioning to the new gray and you’ll
see examples of both. In a grand finale, a hot train with one of the KCS F-Unit

AR1 INTO THE ALLEGHANY RANGE ~ VOL.1 180 min
$40.00
In the early 1990s, Iron Horse America set out to document
CSX railroading on the former Baltimore & Ohio mainlines crossing the Allegheny
Mountains of the eastern United States. The result was a 4-volume video
collection filled with over eleven hours of dramatic coverage. Volume 1, which
was filmed in cooperation with CSX, takes you on an extensive tour of the CSX
mainline that follows the Potomac River between Hancock, West Virginia and
Cumberland, Maryland. This busy ex-B&O double-track mainline twists its way
through the spectacular valleys and hills of the Alleghenies. The highlight of
our tour is the astonishing Magnolia Cut-off - an incredible piece of railroad
engineering. Four double-track tunnels, two huge bridges, several massive cuts
and fills, and a pair of gigantic retaining walls enabled the B&O to gain
passage through the Green Ridge of the Alleghenies between Orleans Crossing and
Okonoko, West Virginia. This fantastic region, with its beautiful scenery and
heavy train traffic, has long been a favourite railfan site. The entire
55-mile route is covered in fascinating detail through all four seasons. Enjoy
the sights and sounds of hundreds of trains working through sun, sleet, and snow
in this exciting presentation, now available on DVD! Previously released
on Video, 1994.

CAJON SUBDIVISION, THE
12 hours (4 Disc Set) $50.00
From the great San Bernardino Valley to
the high desert community of Barstow lies one of the busiest and most scenic
mainlines in the country. At just over 81 miles in length, the BNSF Cajon Sub is
a powerful artery that plays an integral role in moving trains to and from
Southern California. With its stiff climb over Cajon Pass, endless flow of
traffic, and vistas of stark beauty, the Cajon Sub is a place of limitless photo
opportunities for railroad photographers. Pentrex takes you on a journey
of epic proportions across this railroading hot spot. For close to five years,
leaving almost no mile undocumented, filming over 500 trains during winter snow
storms and summer heat, we searched out incredible photo locations to take you
into the heart of this line as it’s never been seen before! BNSF, Union
Pacific, and Amtrak deliver nonstop thrills here. These trains are covered on
the Mojave Desert between Barstow and Victorville as well as on the challenging
Pass. We also capture the action on Union Pacific’s Colton-Palmdale Cutoff as it
parallels the BNSF on Cajon Pass. You’ll see numerous trains with foreign power

BEAUMONT HILL, THE
6 hours (2 Disc Set) $50.00
Over 300 Trains!
At the border of Riverside and San
Bernardino Counties in Southern California lies one of the most interesting and
scenic mountain passes in the Southwest. Some call it Banning Pass or San
Gorgonio Pass, but most railfans simply refer to it as Beaumont Hill. Pentrex is
pleased to present complete coverage of Beaumont Hill from West Colton to Indio
in six hours of pounding, railroading action!
Although it peaks at only 2,591 feet above sea level, Beaumont Hill still
presents sufficient hardship to rival taller passes. Yet, flanked by Mount San
Gorgonio to the north and Mount San Jacinto to the south, it has a beautiful
charm all its own. Known now as UP’s Yuma Subdivision, the 76-mile line is
mostly double-tracked and busier than ever. In addition to Union Pacific,
you’ll see engines from Ferromex, NS, CSX, BNSF, CEFX, GCFX, plus survivors from
C&NW, Rio Grande and SP—and those are just the units we captured on the point!
You’ll also see the SP, MKT, Mopac and WP Heritage units. Many engine models are
represented, ranging from the SD38-2 to the newest SD70ACe and Dash 840C to the
mighty GEVO. We even caught a rare GP15-1 in doublestack service! Autos, lumber,
and intermodal trains dominate the line. The “Rock Train” and Amtrak’s Sunset
Limited are well covered and UP’s Centennial 6936 is seen pulling many
passenger specials. There’s much more to see in this unending parade of dazzling
color, open throttles, squealing brakes, and serpentine curves!
Over five years in the making, across the four seasons, under broiling summer
sun and snow on the Pass, through windstorms and sandstorms, from dawn to dusk,
this is the Ultimate Beaumont Hill!

Diesel Dinosaur
Delights - The Early Years
To an Alcophile, there's nothing sweeter than the wheezing, whistling, barking sound produced by a smoke-belching, burbling Alco diesel. Simply sighting them is cause for elation among the throngs of enthusiasts who seek them out. In this series we set out to document an example of every Alco model remaining in operation, a journey which takes us throughout North America.
Volume 1 covers the early years of the Alco diesel. Locomotive models are presented in chronological order by their first production dates. Switcher models that are powered with the Model 539 prime mover such as the HH660, S-1, S-2, S-3, and S-4 are shown in operation, along with RS-1 and RSD-1 roadswitchers. You'll follow Alco's progress with the introduction of the Model 244 engine in both freight and passenger diesels. Mode RS-2, RSC-2, RS-3, and RSD-5 units are viewed working for various shortlines, museums, and industrial users. Exhilarating scenes show the last two operating Alco PAs pulling passenger trains in Mexico. Volume 1 concludes just before the release of the Model 251 engine.

Notch-Nosed Wonders
- Early 251 Production
Volume 2 covers the early 251-powered Alcos. Searching North America for surviving examples of models introduced between 1955 and 1962, these "notch-nosed wonders" are chronicled from their beginnings to the introduction of the Century line. Alco models S-6, RS-11, RSD-12, RSD-15, T-6, RS-27, RS-32, and RS-36 diesels are viewed in operation, as well as Montreal Locomotive Works RS-18, RSC-14, FPA-4, S-13, and RS-23 units.
Join us for thrilling action as burbling diesels spew clouds of black smoke and produce that tantalizing Alco sound. You'll ride in four different locomotive cabs including our favourite, the rare RS-27. Informative production statistics and spotting features are shown for each model. "Mr. Alco", George Hockaday shares his experience and clears up some often misunderstood facts about Alco and its diesels.

Sleek Century
Behemoths -
Late 251 Production Beyond
In the third of Pentrex's three-volume series about the incredible Alco diesel, the Century models show their muscle. These 251-powered locomotives were the last group produced by Alco before operations ceased in 1969. Montreal Locomotive Works continued to build these Alco-designed diesels until selling to Bombardier, which carried the torch until 1988. The progression of models built by these three companies is followed in chronological order to bring our series to a close. The search for sleek Century behemoths took us throughout North America. Surviving Alco C415, C420, C424, C425, C430, C628, C630, and C636 locomotives are viewed on main lines, shortlines, and industrial operations. MLW's RS37, C630M, M630, M636, M420, M420B, M420R, M420TR, and M420TR2 diesels lug, chug, and put on fantastic shows in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Bombardier LRC, M424, and HR616 units bring the series to an end. Our show concludes with a narrow-gauge DL535E diesel working in California's Imperial Valley. Isolation makes it a rare catch for all but the most hardy Alcophile. You'll see the unit hauling cars of raw material across 27 miles of desert. The newest 251-powered diesel in the U.S. is a fitting end to our celebration of the enduring Alco diesel.

Here is an opportunity to see
what made the B&O one of the all-time great railroads! Noted railroad
photographer Emery Gulash recorded these images in Ohio and Pennsylvania from
1954 to 1964. Articulateds, Mikes, Big Sixes, and many other types of steam
power roll past the camera. Early diesels are also well represented with great
scenes of E-units, F-units and Geeps. Catch the action at the Lorain ore dock
where steam trains unload ships laden with iron ore, and spend time watching the
steam switchers at Rossford Yard in Toledo. Then get a good look at E- and
F-units and Geeps in classic B&O paint schemes. The famous ‘Cincinnatian’,
which ran from Detroit to Toledo on NYC track and to Cincinnati on the B&O line,
is extensively covered. You see it under steam and on many runbys headed by
diesels. Other passenger trains appear, including the ‘Shenandoah’ and Nickel
Plate's ‘Westerner’. B&O blue and grey, lightning-stripe New York Centrals, C&O
yellow and blue, Bessemer orange, and other colourful fallen flags fill the
screen with excitement!

great railroads!
The odyssey resumes in Michigan, shortly after B&O had merged with the
Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. Motive power and rolling stock of both railroads are
frequently seen intermingled. We catch the Cincinnatian and other passenger
trains on the C&O route between Detroit and Toledo, including the towers at
Wayne Junction, Romulus, and Carleton. Moving east we visit Connellsville,
Pennsylvania and Brunswick, Maryland where freight traffic is heavy. Motive
power includes F-units and brand new GP30s. At Harpers Ferry, West Virginia,
perhaps the most scenic spot on the B&O, we see both passenger and freight
trains making their daily runs. Coal movements are captured at Hancock, West
Virginia. Returning westward, we enjoy freight action in Pennsylvania and Ohio,
then return to Michigan for lots more passenger action.

CIRCUS GREAT AMERICAN & CIRCUS TRAINS 105 min $40.00
Years ago excited crowds would be thrilled by the appearance of a circus or a carnival train. They knew a spectacle of grand proportions was coming to town. That thrill has not completely disappeared. Here's your chance to view the last two modern circus trains and the only carnival that still travels by rail!
Every year the Circus World Museum at Baraboo, Wisconsin re-enacts an old-fashioned circus train. Antique circus wagons from the museum's extensive collection are loaded aboard railroad cars by traditional methods. Then vintage passenger diesels power the special train across the state to Milwaukee where these highly prized wagons, pulled by teams of powerful draft horses called ‘baggage stock’, will star in the annual Great Circus Parade.
The James E. Strates Carnival travels the eastern US aboard a 61-car train. Many of the carnival's employees live aboard the train, just as in times past. Jimmy Strates, the founder's grandson, relates what it was like growing up on the train and explains how travelling by rail works better for the company than other transportation methods.
These trains and others are shown while underway and as equipment and personnel work to load and unload them. See the unique methods used to handle heavy equipment and gain additional background on the great American circus trains of the past and present. It's a railroading experience like no other and one the whole family will enjoy! Produced by Pentrex 1999. This DVD includes Chapter Menu.
CATSF CUMBRES & TOLTEC SCENIC FREIGHT TRAIN 60 min $40.00
Here is your ticket to relive the days of Rio Grande narrow gauge freight service aboard the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. In September 1990, the San Juan Express, a privately sponsored photographer’s freight train, ran on an unusual 2-day excursion that covered the entire line from Chama, New Mexico to Antonito, Colorado. Led by Baldwin-built 2-8-2 Mikado locomotive #488, the train with its vintage freight equipment tackled the four percent grade from Chama to Cumbres Pass at an elevation of 10,015-feet and then continued east to Antonito. Stops were scheduled to allow photographers ample opportunity to capture fantastic run-bys at the most scenic spots, with plenty of smoke, whistles, and steam. Excellent weather conditions and the wide variety of scenery along the way added to the excitement of the trip. Steep mountain curves, rolling upland meadows, and incredible Rocky Mountain vistas made fantastic settings against which the historic train performed. This 64-mile long remnant of the once-flourishing Rio Grande Narrow Gauge network is now the longest 3-foot gauge railroad in America and one of the country’s most popular train rides. It’s every bit as exciting today as it was when this program was originally released in 1990. Join Pentrex as we step back in time to savour once more the thrill of narrow gauge steam freight in the Rockies!

This remnant of the once flourishing Rio Grande narrow gauge network runs from Chama, New Mexico to Antonito, Colorado. The spectacular vistas of the San Juan Mountains and the Upper Rio Chama Valley flank the rails of this serpentine route as it switches back and forth across the two state lines. Mikado steam locomotives built in the mid 1920s power the vintage equipment for these passenger trains. Daily, during summer months, they struggle up the four percent grade to the 10,015-foot summit of Cumbres Pass. You’ll ride in the cab and witness the expertise of the engineer and fireman who control these locomotives as they blast upgrade. Numerous run-bys highlight the power and beauty of a C&TS doubleheader at many scenic spots along the 64-mile line. Pentrex camera crews traveled the eastern half of the extensive Conrail system in 1995, searching out the best places for traffic volume, accessibility, and the camaraderie that's shared among the railfans who favor these popular sites. The result is a fantastic portfolio of these sixteen great eastern hot spots:
CP Five and CP Potter, New Jersey; Bear Mountain, Selkirk Yard, State Line Tunnel, Syracuse, Lyons, Buffalo, and Binghamton, New York; Allentown, Reading, Rockville Bridge, Horse Shoe Curve, Conpit Jct., and Rochester Tower, Pennsylvania; and Palmer, Massachusetts.
Other railroads are spotted at these sites as well as Conrail, including New York, Susquehanna & Western; Central Vermont; CP Rail; and Amtrak. Among the wide variety of locomotives spotted are LMS and GATX lease units, Canadian National power, Amtrak GP40-TC, and the rare General Electric C32-8 (Conrail bought the only ten units of this model ever built). Informative narration identifies all the trains by their symbols and gives you insights into the special characteristics that make each hot spot so exciting to watch. The beautiful photography and intense railroading action will keep you spellbound!
Released originally on video, 1995. This DVD includes Chapter Menu.
HSWEST CONRAIL HOT SPOTS WEST 120 min $40.00
Railroading ‘Hot Spots’ are favorite gathering places where railfans can expect to see numerous trains in a short amount of time. Following upon the success of Conrail Hot Spots East, which covered the Eastern half of the extensive Conrail system, Pentrex set out to record many of the revered hot spots on the Western half of the system in the states of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The locations visited in Ohio include Ashtabula, Alliance, Crestline, the Cleveland Drawbridge, Berea Tower, Galion, Marion, Port Clinton, Toledo, and Ridgeway. Indiana sites include Elkhart, South Bend, Porter, Hammond, Muncie, and Terre Haute and in Illinois we view the action at St. Elmo and Effingham. All Conrail trains are identified by their symbols indicating departure cities and destinations. Big Blue puts on an impressive show for us with its fleet of power that was relatively new for 1996, such as SD60s and C40s. Locomotives from other railroads are seen on Conrail trains as run-through power. In addition, trains belonging to CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, Illinois Central, and Grand Trunk Western are seen at many of the important junctions. This DVD includes Chapter Menu. Battle for
Donner Pass / Across Donner Summit
Between Roseville, California and Sparks, Nevada lies one of the most difficult sustained climbs in American railroading, the Donner Summit route. This 140-mile stretch of formerly Southern Pacific, now Union Pacific, double-tracked mainline routinely challenges trains to 2.3 percent grades on its 85-mile eastbound climb to the 7,000-foot elevation at Donner Summit.
BATTLE FOR DONNER
PASS
(77 Minutes)
Here is the incredible story of the
Southern Pacific men and equipment that fought impossible odds to keep this
historic mountain pass open through winter's worst storms. This amazing saga
takes you right into the cabs of the equipment and introduces the people whose
job it was to keep the tracks clear. You see the Flangers and Regulators,
spreaders and bulldozers, rotaries and more! (Produced by Video Rails 1993)
ACROSS DONNER
SUMMIT
(120 Minutes)
Our host and personal guide through
this exciting presentation is noted railroad photographer and historian Richard
Steinheimer. Heavy Southern Pacific trains use the original route built over
the summit by the Central Pacific Railroad in the 1860s. After 120 years of
continual use, the obstacles are still staggering. Steep grades, sharp curves,
and cruel weather face the trains on their way over the Sierra Nevada. Helpers
are required in both directions. You see flangers and spreaders clear the
line of accumulated snow. Freight and passenger trains roll over Donner in
bitter storms and as clear skies brighten the surrounding snowcover. (Produced

GBAY GREEN BAY ROUTE 72 min $40.00
Railroads powered entirely by Alco diesel locomotives are few in number. The Green Bay & Western Railroad had a total of sixteen operating Alcos when this show was filmed in 1992, GB&W's last full year of operation as an independent company. Indeed, the railroad had an affinity for Alcos since diesels first replaced steam locomotives, keeping them well maintained and looking great in their deep red paint scheme.
Stretching from the east side to the west side of the Badger State, the Green Bay & Western line passed through scenic Wisconsin farmland. Much of the railroad's traffic was related to the state's booming paper industry. Local freights are seen in action as they work these vital enterprises. We follow road trains across the state, watching as they stop to pick up and set out cars. Powered by smoking and burbling Alco diesels, the trains put on fascinating shows working over the hills and through small towns. The essence and vitality of one of America's classic small railroads is preserved in this affectionate tribute. Listen to the rumble and see the smoke of those big red diesels along The Green Bay Route!

VR025 MULLAN PASS ~ The Monsters and More! 60 min $40.00
It’s one
of the roughest, toughest mountain passes, where heavy tonnage trains battle 2.2
percent grades and up to three sets of helpers are needed for the haul. It’s a
line of repeated horseshoe curves, with two long trestles, and a 3,896-foot long
tunnel that crosses the Continental Divide. It’s located in the Big Sky country
of Montana, where endless vistas of mountains and cloud-filled skies create a
scenic backdrop for trains of 100-plus cars. It’s a place where two railroads
juggle nonstop traffic over 29 miles of partially single-tracked mountain rails.
Welcome to Mullan Pass!
Burlington Northern and Montana Rail Link shared the line when Video Rails
captured the excitement on this legendary Pass in 1990. Starting at Helena
Junction, we see BN and MRL trains depart for the steep climb to the summit.
Every westbound train needs helpers and MRL’s heaviest power is assigned to its
helper pool. SD40-2s and SD45s make up the bulk of the power seen here.
15,000-ton coal trains with 45,000 HP grind their way up the 2.2 percent grade,
past Iron Ridge, Greenhorn Trestle, and Skyline Trestle to Mullan Tunnel,
Blossburg Siding, and Elliston. Huge clouds of diesel exhaust billow out of the
tunnel, making it easy to see why it’s called the 'Black Fog of Blossburg.'
A special treat is a cab ride across the Pass in the lead helper engine of BN
Train 195, a daily mixed freight. Whether you’re viewing the line from the
crews’ perspective, from trackside, or through vast panorama views, railroading
on Mullan Pass is an awesome experience you’ll want to enjoy again and again!

Join Pentrex on a journey of discovery back to 1992 to explore Mexico’s Pacifico Railroad. Travel the entire line from Guadalajara to the US border at Nogales. It’s an eleven hundred mile odyssey that examines the many faces of a truly extraordinary operation. The Pacifico Railroad was a bastion of old and new technology with an unusual locomotive roster. See older Alco and MLW engines reporting for duty, including the last remaining active Alco PA diesels, and freshly painted Alco PA DH-17 in its Southern Pacific Daylight paint scheme. Newly acquired BC Rail locomotives are also seen in action. Stepping into the shops at Empalme, you’ll view both maintenance work on the older locomotives and construction of new GE Super 7 engines. Here’s your chance to witness railroading from a different era, where train orders are still hooped up, telegraphers attend to their keys, cabooses mark the end of all freight trains, and marker lamps are in regular use. PRB12 POWDER RIVER COMBO
180 min
$40.00
King Coal - Powder River Rails & Mines / Powder River Basin Coal Trains
Combined on one action-packed Combo DVD are two exciting programs bringing the thrill of railroading in Wyoming's coal country: King Coal - Powder River Rails & Mines (2001) and Powder River Basin Coal Trains (1992).
KING
COAL - POWDER RIVER RAILS & MINES
(90
Minutes)
In Wyoming's
Powder River Basin, train after train of loaded and empty hoppers make their way
across the desolate, rolling hills of the high plains. This is coal country.
With production levels surpassing all other US mining areas, the numbers are
staggering and that means rail traffic is at an all time high. To move these
mountains of coal, the railroads rely on modern, high horsepower locomotives
such as GE C44-9s and EMD SD90s to lug their heavy loads over the grades.
Single track has been doubled and in some areas tripled to handle the massive
volume. Rolling meets between Union Pacific and BNSF trains are common. Often
several movements are visible at the same time, many with locomotives on both
ends of the consist. There's even a helper district on the north end of the
line. And all of these trains transport a single commodity - coal! Have you
ever wanted to visit a strip mine to see how coal is dug, hauled from the pits,
and flood-loaded into moving trains. At Black Thunder mine, close-up views show
just how it's done. Massive mining machines and high-density railroading are
required to move this vital commodity.
POWDER
RIVER BASIN COAL TRAINS
(90 Minutes)
Wyoming's Powder
River Basin may possibly be the last great American rail frontier. In the
1970s, the Burlington Northern and the Chicago & North Western Railroads laid
trackage into the new mines that were being opened to harvest the low sulfur
coal that lies buried under forty percent of the state. Since then, growing
numbers of coal trains have been rolling out of the Powder River Basin, headed
for distribution around the world. Helper engines are required to get the
loaded trains over White Tail Hill and the north end of the Basin. We'll climb
aboard a set of helpers as they give a 14,000-ton train a shove up the
mountain. You'll see new General Electric C40-8 locomotives, painted in a
darker yellow paint scheme, as they work the coal trains of the Chicago & North
Western. Burlington Northern coal trains are headed by a great mix of newer and
older generation locomotives. Heavy ballasted mainline now runs where no
railroad existed twenty years earlier. The 136-pound rail is laid on concrete
ties to support the weight of train after heavy train. Wyoming's wide open
spaces provide a dramatic and ever-changing backdrop.

natural train sounds, the other with narration added. The viewer can switch the

PBMAIN PITTSBURGH MAINLINES
136 min
$40.00
This
title shows heavy Railroad action around the 'Iron City'. Imagine a place where
the railroading includes mountain helper districts, long tunnels, countless
bridges, triple track mainlines, heavy industrial switching, an active
interlocking tower, and well over a hundred trains a day! That's Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, one of the busiest railroading centers in America, with possibly
the widest variety of operations to be found in a single region. The last
months of Conrail's Pittsburgh routes were captured just prior to Norfolk Southern's takeover in 1999. 'Big Blue' provided enough traffic to keep any
railfan happy. CSX played an equally important role in this region and you'll
find plenty of dramatic CSX action. Plus, the heavy-industrial-hauling Union
Railroad also contributed exciting scenes. You'll see switchers toiling in a
massive steel mill, Amtrak passenger trains on the mainlines, an unusual
coal-hauling railroad, and even freight barges on the rivers around the city.
Here's your opportunity to experience heavy-duty railroading during several
seasons of the year as we tour the
best spots around the 'Three Rivers City' before the 1999 mergers that changed
the face of the area's operations. This title was produced exclusively for
Pentrex by Iron Horse America in 2001. This DVD
includes Chapter Menu.
REDCARS PACIFIC ELECTRIC / LOS ANGELES STREETCARS 65 min $40.00
The Pacific Electric
Railway—once the largest interurban railway in the nation—and the unique
streetcars of the Los Angeles Transit Lines exist now only in memory and on
film. Two outstanding documentaries from Pentrex have been combined on one DVD
to let you relive the final years of these two transportation legends.
Pacific Electric - The Twilight Years (30 min)
After serving Southern California’s transportation needs for over
sixty years, by the 1950s the PE’s rail passenger service had been reduced to
five lines. View the last of the once-famous Hollywood cars on the Watts Local
and the Big Red Cars, often referred to as "blimps," on the Long Beach, San
Pedro, Bellflower, and Catalina Lines. You’ll also see memorable railfan trips,
the tower cars on the four-track mainline, and the last of the 'Juice
Jacks' in action on Santa Monica Boulevard and at Butte Street Yard. Filmed by
noted rail photographer Bruce Ward, this is an unforgettable journey to enjoy
again and again.
Los Angeles Streetcars - The Final Years (35 min)
Los Angeles commuters fondly referred to their narrow-gauge
streetcars as 'Yellow Cars.' We’ll take you on an end-to-end tour of the W and S
lines, the last to use H-Series standard type streetcars. In 1958, the MTA took
over and converted the whole system to streamlined PCC-type cars, most of which
were painted two-tone green. You’ll see the entire routes of the five remaining
lines: R, S, V, P and J. Then you’ll go to the Georgia Street Car House on the
last day of operation and the Vernon Yard as retired cars are placed in storage.
It’s a remarkable look at a memorable system.

DMIR
DULUTH, MISSABE & IRON RANGE
80 min
$40.00
In the
northern woods of Minnesota lies the Mesabi Iron Range, an area rich in taconite
iron ore. When this production was filmed in 2001, the Duluth, Missabe & Iron
Range Railway was busy hauling this ore from processing plants to the rail docks
on Lake Superior. Explore the operations of the DM&IR beginning at the dock in
Two Harbors, along its two divisions and several branch lines, to the huge docks
in Duluth, and see its beautiful maroon and gold locomotives at work. Traveling
along the Iron Range Division from Two Harbors to Iron Junction, we spot DM&IR's
SD40-3s, former SD45T-2s remanufactured for the railroad. At Highland, a
southbound train enters the scale track to weigh each car. The DM&IR runs three
general freight trains and we watch one, the Miscellaneous Road Freight, head
onto the branch line at Wales to pick up freight cars from the Northshore Mining
Company. A rail train, led by an SD38AC, departs the yard in Biwabik. At Iron
Junction a northbound train is headed by a rebuilt SD18 and a rebuilt SD9, now
both classified as SD-Ms. On the Missabe Division, run-through power includes
CSX SD80MACs and BNSF Dash 9s. An SD38DC leads a southbound load with steam
rising in the cold winter air from freshly processed taconite pellets. We're
treated to the nonstop operations at Dock 6 in Duluth, the largest ore dock on
the Great Lakes. The DM&IR, seen here through all four seasons, delivers a
unique combination of hardworking railroading, intriguing motive power, modern
industrial facilities, and scenic wilderness.
POKEY ALONG THE POCAHONTAS DISTRICT 92 min $40.00
Coal
Trains & Time Freights
Travel back in time to southern West Virginia, deep in the heart of Appalachia,
to experience the busy double-tracked stretch of Norfolk Southern mainline called
the Pocahontas District. It’s the mid 1990s and you’re touring the “Pokey” from
Williamson to Bluefield to watch heavy coal trains labor upgrade and speeding
time-freights rush across the system.
The rugged terrain of this mountainous district has always been a challenge to
the railroad. Numerous bridges carrying the tracks back and forth across the
rivers are interspersed with eighteen tunnels that bore through the ridges along
this line. The area’s steep grades bring most trains down to a crawl and helper
engines are required on almost all eastbound trains. The long climb up to
Elkhorn Tunnel is a steady 1.4 percent grade. Coal is king in these parts.
You’ll visit a coal mine where strings of hoppers are being topped off with this
important commodity. Mine runs with cabooses are seen, as well as fleets of
heavy mainline coal drags pulled by NS’s newest locomotives. The Pokey is a
railroading adventure where the scenery is spectacular and the obstacles are met
with brute horsepower and ingenuity!

‘Last of the Giants’ / ‘Last of
the Giants, Volume 2: The Cheyenne Shops’
Here, combined on one DVD, are two fantastic shows presenting the Big Boys in all their glory!
‘LAST OF THE GIANTS’ - Union Pacific paid tribute to its Big Boys in a public relations film that has become a collector's item for railfans worldwide. It documents the evolution of UP steam power from 4-6-0s to the development of the articulated locomotive. Then it introduces the Big Boys and shows them being serviced and in operation. Trackside and cab footage show these 4-8-8-4s pulling long freights over Wyoming's Sherman Hill during their last years in service. This classic film is one you can enjoy over and over!
'LAST OF THE GIANTS, Vol. 2: CHEYENNE SHOPS’ - Cheyenne was a bustling hub for UP steam in the 1950s. It's where the Big Boys were based during their last years of operation. Volume 2 takes you on a tour of the coal chute and servicing areas, on the turntable that served the 48-stall roundhouse, and to the backshop where the Big Boys were rebuilt. You hear the stories of the men who once worked on these mighty locomotives, and will experience the Cheyenne yards as they existed in the 1950s. The footage used in this production was taken by UP cameramen over a 3-year period, with updated material added by Pentrex in 1993. It's an unforgettable visit!

This DVD brings you two viewing
treats: a Pentrex documentary focusing on Big Boy operations over Sherman Hill
and a 1950s television drama about a Big Boy engineer.
‘LAST OF THE GIANTS, VOL. 3: SHERMAN HILL’ - Allan Krieg, the writer and director of UP's classic film ‘Last of the Giants’, shares the challenges his camera crews faced while capturing the Big Boys on film. Scenes of the running gear in motion, shot from a camera car on a parallel track, and pacing sequences with the Big Boys are a real thrill. You ride in the cabs and watch the firemen and engineers at work. All the scenes in this great show are compiled from colour footage shot by UP between 1955 and 1958.
‘BIG BOYS ON TV’, is a 1950s TV drama about a Big Boy engineer (played by Ed Begley) who is struggling with fears about his future. The live broadcast takes you right into the heart of this railroader's life at home and in the cab of his Big Boy. Pentrex included some original footage shot on location showing Big Boys on Sherman Hill and in the Cheyenne yards. We also included the old commercials that aired with the broadcast. It's a real trip to the past!
In colour and black & white, with appropriate Hi-Fi sound and narration. Includes Chapter Menus. Produced in cooperation with the Union Pacific Historical Society.
WOTR WORKIN' ON THE RAILROAD
95 min
$40.00
Have you ever passed a track gang and
wondered what all those machines actually do? Here's your answer and more.
Visit a tie replacement and surfacing gang to witness the amazing parade
of equipment as it progresses down the track. Closeup shots explain what each
machine does. Then tour a major shop to see in detail how coal hoppers
are built. Next you're off to view undercutting machines cleaning ballast on BNSF. Did you ever wonder what it's like to work as a dispatcher? You'll visit
a Norfolk Southern facility where the chief dispatcher explains the operation.
Returning to BNSF, you'll see one of the most awesome pieces of railroad
equipment: the P-811 concrete tie layer. This gigantic device lifts welded
rails from the ties and forces them to both sides of the machine. It then
removes old ties from the right of way, replaces them with new ones, and puts
the rails back in place, all in one continuous movement. It's an absolutely
fascinating, complex apparatus.

SANTA FE 3759 'FINAL RUN OVER
CAJON' 60
min
$40.00
Santa Fe's 'final run' of steam power
over Cajon Pass took place on February 6, 1955 when locomotive No. 3759 was
brought out of storage at the request of the Railway Club of Southern California
for a special excursion dubbed 'Farewell to Steam.' This historic event was
captured on film by noted railfan photographer J. Allen Hawkins, and his
colourful images vividly convey the excitement and the drama of that final day
in the life of the Santa Fe steam era. The powerful Northern-type locomotive
pulled its special train out of Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal for the
climb over Cajon Pass to Barstow, returning to Los Angeles later that same day.
Along the way it stopped at favourite railfan spots for photography run-bys,
giving you the opportunity to experience the excursion from trackside, inside
the cab of the locomotive, even from the roofs of the cab and the tender. Clear
skies and magnificent Cajon scenery added their special touches to the great
steam action you'll see here. It's a fascinating trip back in time, bringing
back to life the glory days of Santa Fe steam!

SFMERGE SANTA FE COMBO 169 min $40.00
Featuring ‘ACROSS THE HEARTLAND’ and ‘COUNTDOWN TO MERGER’
Step back to September 21, 1995, Santa Fe's last full day of independent operations before its merger with Burlington Northern. Pentrex set out on an odyssey across America's heartland to document the final chapter of this historic railroad just days prior to that milestone. Two videos resulted which have now been combined on one new DVD, bringing you the full story of this great adventure!
ACROSS THE HEARTLAND - SANTA FE'S CHILLICOTHE SUBDIVISION.
Stretching from the greater Chicago area to Fort Madison, Iowa lies the Chillicothe Sub, a double-tracked ribbon of rail that was home to Santa Fe's hottest trains. We'll take you back to the Chillicothe Sub as it was in 1995, just days before Santa Fe's merger with the Burlington Northern. Flashy Warbonnets leading high-speed trains are seen at favorite spots such as Mc Cook Junction, Streator, and Edelstein Hill - the line's most famous location. There are great scenes at Galesburg and Cameron where Santa Fe and Burlington Northern tracks cross over one another and more drama at Fort Madison where trains are seen crossing the Mississippi River on the railroad's impressive bridge there. From urban sprawl through lush, green croplands, this was Santa Fe action at its very best.
COUNTDOWN TO MERGER - SANTA FE'S MARCELINE SUBDIVISION.
Six days prior to the merger with Burlington Northern, Pentrex set off to record the last moments of Santa Fe's independence by tracing the action on the Marceline Sub from Fort Madison, Iowa to Kansas City, Missouri. Facing sunshine and rain, trekking across isolated backwoods hills and through river valleys, we relentlessly sought out the best photo locations along the double-tracked line. Overhead bridges offered excellent views of Santa Fe's hottest trains. Thirty miles of joint operations with Norfolk Southern provided plenty of excitement as trains from both roads raced over the line. On September 21, 1995, Santa Fe's last full day, we view the single-tracked Missouri River Bridge and head into Kansas City to reach the end of the Marceline Sub - and the end of an era.
SFAZ SANTA FE’s ARIZONA MAINLINE 120 min $40.00
Stretching across the mountains and deserts of Arizona, the Santa Fe mainline is a double-tracked ribbon of high-density railroading at its finest. All Santa Fe’s transcontinental traffic funnels through Arizona, making the action intense as train after train works across the state. The majority of trains are powered by locomotives in Santa Fe's classic blue & yellow scheme, including EMD F45s, but in 1991 when this program was originally filmed, Santa Fe was taking delivery of brand new General Electric Dash 8-40BW units as part of its Super Fleet program. See pure sets of these 500-class units in Warbonnet paint pulling hot intermodal trains and Electro-Motive engines in Warbonnet as well. Arizona’s magnificent topography of high mountains, rugged canyons, and stark desert landscapes creates stunning dioramas highlighted by long Santa Fe trains loaded with plenty of power up front. Amtrak’s Southwest Chief is seen racing through scenic western landscapes; the action in Kingman Canyon is nonstop as trains pass through this photogenic location; and impressive Canyon Diablo Bridge provides a beautiful setting for the flashing Warbonnets. Produced 1991
DVD Special Feature: Chapter Menu provides instant access to program segments. In Colour, with Hi-Fi Audio and Narration. Full-screen (4x3) Format. No region code; can be played in any NTSC DVD player worldwide.
SFNM SANTA FE's NEW MEXICO MAINLINE (Combo DVD) 180 min $40.00
Santa Fe's Clovis and Gallup Subs exist in a land of red rock bluffs, windswept mesas, and rugged canyons where Super Fleet diesels in red and silver Warbonnet paint lead high-priority intermodal trains and drag freights in unending numbers. Pentrex captured the beauty of New Mexico railroading Santa Fe style in 1994 prior to the merger with BN. Originally released as two separate programs, Volumes I and II have now been combined on one DVD, bringing you the full story of Santa Fe's New Mexico mainline.
Volume I - THE CLOVIS SUBDIVISION
The stretch of Santa Fe Railway known as The Clovis Subdivision passes through the confines of Abo Canyon, a rugged five-and-a-half mile passage that witnesses an intense level of railroading action. See a steady parade of Santa Fe trains crosses the seven bridges and rolls past the rugged outcropping of Abo Canyon. The Clovis Sub also covers part of Santa Fe's fast mainline, where red and silver Warbonnets work the line from Texas to Belen, New Mexico. See everything from the hottest priority intermodal trains to drag freights as we tour the line from east to west. The yards, stations, bridges, and other scenic locations are all explored along the way. Fantastic images of the American Southwest jump alive when Santa Fe's superfest of diesels goes into action. The lighting effects of low winter sun and late afternoon or early morning photography create stunningly vivid shots as the trains roll through the wide open spaces and deep canyons of New Mexico. Travel with us across Santa Fe's New Mexico Mainline - the Clovis Subdivision, and you'll understand why they call this state the "Land of Enchantment." 90 Minutes
Volume II - THE GALLUP SUBDIVISION
Nature provides the exquisite red rock bluffs, mesas and canyons of western New Mexico, and Santa Fe delivers train after train powered by red and silver Warbonnets. The resulting combination is a stunning picture that's the essence of Santa Fe railroading across the Gallup Subdivision. Our tour of the Gallup Sub starts in Belen and works west across the line to the Arizona border. Westbounds can be seen climbing the steep grade out of Belen on their way to Dalies, a major junction that leads out across the desert and past rock walls of bluffs and mesas. An Amtrak AMD-103 locomotive, pulling the Southwest Chief, speeds by an old corral at Quirk, creating a sharp contrast of the Old West and the new. Near Baca, an Escalante Western coal train with its brightly painted locomotives heads down the Lee Ranch Sub. From scenic vantage points along the entire route, you'll spot Santa Fe's Super Fleet hauling trains of high-priority freight across the state. Many locations are photographed under the low, early morning sun when long shadows and pastel hues enrich the stunning southwestern landscapes and the trains glow in vivid detail. A hundred and eighty miles of heavy-duty railroading, Santa Fe style. 90 Minutes

DENVER & RIO GRANDE
WESTERN 135 min
$40.00
The Denver & Rio Grande Western means
rugged, spectacular mountain railroading, heavy freight hauling, and terrific
action shots. That was especially true in 1986 when this show was originally
filmed. At that time, the railroad was still an independent entity and most of
its trains were pulled by pure sets of Rio Grande power, many with cabooses.
Units from Burlington Northern, Southern Pacific, and Missouri Pacific could
also be seen with run-through trains. This was pre-merger time, a great time to
tour the D&RGW.
Travel the entire Denver to Salt Lake City mainline. Savour the thrill of a cab
ride up the Front Range to Moffat Tunnel. Travel to Winter Park to see the Ski
Train with its heavyweight coaches. Watch Rio Grande, Santa Fe, and Burlington
Northern trains share operations on the Joint Line between Denver and Pueblo.
Climb the awesome slopes of Tennessee Pass to the 10,000-foot summit; then
descend into the Royal Gorge with its sheer rock walls. Filmed throughout the
four seasons of the year, this show brings you the beauty of the Rio Grande
terrain and all its non-stop action, including the Rio Grande's business cars,
Amtrak, and plenty of freights. It's a fantastic trip! Produced in 1986;

of the route can only be accessed by train, and the pristine beauty of
south-western Colorado's San Juan Range remains hidden to all but the railroad's
crews and travellers. This new DVD takes you into the heart of the Durango &
Silverton line. You'll see all the famous locations: the breathtaking Highline
balancing 400 feet above the River of the Lost Souls, the Narrows, Rockwood Cut
with its huge red granite rock formations, and Silverton, perched at an
elevation of 9,288 feet. Mikado steam locomotives are seen hard at work
throughout the tourist seasons and there are exquisite scenes of a rare winter
excursion when the landscape is blanketed with snow. Touring the train yards
and servicing areas, filled with restored historic equipment, is reminiscent of
the early days of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Here are the scenic wonders
of narrow gauge railroading through the Rockies as few have seen them. VHS version

Cajon Pass
and Tehachapi Loop - these two Southern California railroading
landmarks draw railfans from around the world seeking to experience the
engineering ingenuity, spectacular scenery, and steady parade of trains that
make these locations so appealing. Never was that more true than in 1986 when
this program was originally filmed. At that time most trains still had cabooses,
Southern Pacific oil cans (the 'Tank Train') still ran over Tehachapi, and many
Santa Fe and Southern Pacific locomotives sported the short-lived red and yellow
'Kodachrome' merger paint scheme. You could still see pure sets of blue and
yellow Santa Fe power, including EMD SD45s, F45s, and FP45s and GE U36Cs and
C30-7s. Southern Pacific also ran pure sets of its locomotives, including SD45s
and 'tunnel motors', and Amtrak ran the Southwest Chief and the Desert
Wind over Cajon with F40PH locomotives. The Santa Fe dispatcher's office was
still located in the San Bernardino depot, and the Mojave depot was still in
use. These are the sights of the past but you can experience them and more in
this incredible show. Ride a Union Pacific helper pushing a 12,000-ton coal
train over Cajon. Visit the Santa Fe dispatcher's office in the San Bernardino

running' brings to mind images of long trains operating down busy city streets
while auto traffic swerves to avoid disastrous collisions. That's exactly what
you'll find in this collective look at 22 locations around the country where
railroads continue to run trains down the middle of main streets. Street
running is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Modesto, California, where the
Tidewater Southern (now UP) tracks have been a problem for years, has finally
seen its last train pass down busy 9th Street. You'll see it just days before
the line was closed. You'll also visit Erie, Pennsylvania, where street running
will soon be eliminated on Norfolk Southern tracks running down 19th Street.
Other notable locations include Brooklyn, New York; Chicago, Illinois; Oakland,

Brownsville, Pennsylvania; Santa Cruz, California; San Antonio, Texas; and New
Albany, Indiana. These trains are operated by CSX, UP, NS, BNSF, CP and several
short lines. It's an electrifying experience to view massive coal trains,
freights, time-sensitive intermodal trains, commuter operations, and even switch
crews as they negotiate their way through traffic-filled streets.

SLA STEAM TO LOS ANGELES 75 min $40.00
50th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Union Passenger
Terminal
It’s now known as one of the most dramatically exciting side-by-side
steam locomotives scenes ever staged – UP 8444 and SP 4449 running on the
parallel tracks leading up Cajon Pass. The two mighty locomotives were leaving
the 50th Anniversary Celebration at Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal in 1989
and Pentrex camera crews were trackside and onboard to capture incredible
footage of this once-in-a-lifetime event! We begin with UP 8444’s journey
from Cheyenne, Wyoming in April 1989 and follow the powerful 4-8-4 across
Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada, to California. With its matched set of 14 Armour
yellow passenger cars, the train also included UP’s vintage E-9 diesel number
951 and its new SD60M number 6085 which would also be on display during the
festivities. Steaming across the Western landscapes and through scenic canyons,
the 8444 looks fantastic. Then, as both the SP 4999 and UP 8444 parade
side-by-side into the LAUPT station, our camera catches the Grand Entry from the
middle of the two tracks— it’s a classic shot! We spend some time seeing the
displays at the celebration, especially the photographers’ special 3-across line

TMDA TRAIN MEETS -
DOUBLE THE ACTION
48 min
$40.00
We all feel pretty lucky when we're able to photograph two trains meeting
each other. Sometimes it's the result of careful planning, but more often it's
just plain luck. Over two years went into the filming of Train Meets - Double
the Action, and the results are simply spectacular! Every scene gives you at
least two trains meeting or passing each other. Some shots include three trains!
All the sites shown here are located in Southern California. The majority are on
Cajon Pass, a dynamite setting for exciting train action. You'll see
side-by-side running as the trains battle the grades of Cajon, always a
thrilling sight. Each locale is identified by on-screen graphics. There's a huge
variety of motive power and equipment to be seen. BNSF locomotives in Heritage
II colors are plentiful. You'll also see motive power in various paint schemes
from Union Pacific (including the new UP design with the American flag proudly
waving), Southern Pacific, Santa Fe, Burlington Northern, Cotton Belt, CSX, and
others. Doublestacks, piggybacks, autoracks, mixed freight, and some passenger
trains are shown. The trains do the talking in this show, as there is minimal
narration to interfere with the throaty growls of hardworking engines or
squealing flanges. On-screen graphics keep you well informed about the locations
you see. All four seasons of the year are represented, even winter scenes
showing snow on Cajon. With the camera poised to catch the movements from
interesting angles and meets galore, this is one show every railfan should see!

DOUBLE THE ACTION 90 min
$40.00
‘Train
Meets - Double the Action’ was our first show dedicated to that rare,
sought-after moment in railfanning when two trains are meeting each other or
running side by side. Train Meets 2 continues the pace with 90 minutes of
nonstop, screen-filling, multi-train action featuring two and sometimes three
trains in every scene. Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific
trains are the stars of this show, with an occasional appearance by Metrolink.
The action takes place throughout Southern California at Cajon Pass, San Timoteo
Canyon, the BNSF Needles Sub, the San Bernardino Sub between Colton and
Fullerton, and the Tehachapi route. See a variety of modern high-horsepower
diesels heading up trains at Cajon and Summit on Cajon Pass, the flyover at
Frost, Daggett, Colton, and Santa Ana. Some unusual treats include a BNSF
passenger special at Colton and a UP officers’ special meeting the Ringling
Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus train on Tehachapi Loop. It’s great
viewing!
TRIBUTE TRIBUTE TO TENNESSEE PASS 100 min $40.00
Esteemed for its scenic beauty and respected for the difficulty of its terrain, Tennessee Pass has been a magnet, drawing railfans and photographers to Colorado’s mountains for years. When word spread that Union Pacific was closing the pass in 1997, interest climbed to an all-time high. Along with visitors from throughout the world, Pentrex traveled to this revered line to document its final months of operation. Our efforts were rewarded with a high volume of movements and an outstanding mix of trains. The grit of heavy-haul railroading is an awesome sight. Coal trains slug it out on the 3 percent grade leading to the 10,000-foot summit. Colorado’s highest snow-capped mountains loom over toiling freights. Squealing flanges echo off canyon walls as trains grind through serpentine curves, and past the raging waters of the Arkansas River. Helper engines are viewed assisting trains over the mountain. Up to nine of UP’s newest AC-powered giants are needed to lug tonnage across the pass. It’s this type of intense action and spectacular scenery that made the line so idolized. Join with us as we pay tribute to Union Pacific’s Tennessee Pass Subdivision!

TNWP TODAY’S NORTHWESTERN PACIFIC 110 min $40.00
Take a step back in time as Pentrex pays affectionate tribute to the Northwestern Pacific Railroad. It's 1992 and the Northwestern Pacific, a Southern Pacific subsidiary, is still running its venerable SD-9s on through trains from Suisun City to Willits in Northern California. Lumber is still the chief commodity hauled by this historic road, as it's been for years. Six days a week you can still see NWP trains travelling the 156-mile line. Much of the traffic originates in Eureka on the newly-formed North Coast Railroad (formerly the Eureka Southern). The NWP interchanges with the North Coast in Willits and forwards those trains to the Southern Pacific at Suisun City. NWP diesels were leased by the North Coast Railroad during its first months, recreating the days when the NWP still owned the line to Eureka. Be treated to a brief look at the operations of the North Coast Railroad and the Eureka Southern, as well as an up-close and personal tour of the Northwestern Pacific. Petaluma is NWP's base of operations. Sprint trains and their crews originate here, running both north and south on the line. Normally the north end of the line is only run at night but in 1992 NWP ran Willits-to-Petaluma trains during daylight hours, providing us with a rare opportunity to capture this scenic route. Three years of filming throughout the changing seasons resulted in the original release of this show in 1993 as a VHS video. Now it is available on DVD, delivering these fascinating images with the enhanced viewing quality that DVD provides. Produced 1993
TCR TODAY'S CHICAGO RAILROADS 120 min $40.00
Chicago, 1991! The country's railroading capitol, with a network of rail lines unlike anywhere else in the nation. The Fallen Flags of today - Burlington Northern; Chicago & North Western; Chicago Central; Conrail; Grand Trunk Western; Illinois Central; Santa Fe; Soo Line; and Wisconsin Central - were then still independent, operating entities. Other railroads plied the lines there as well: Belt Railway of Chicago; Chicago Rail Link; Chicago Short Line; Chicago, South Shore & South Bend; CSX Transportation; Elgin, Joliet & Eastern; Indiana Harbor Belt; Iowa Interstate; Metra; Norfolk Southern; Union Pacific; and Amtrak. Pentrex explored this intensely active hub, stopping at famous hot spots and some less well-known locations: 16th Street Tower, Belt Tower, Blue Island Crossing, Brighton Park, Colehour Yard, Clyde Yard, Dolton Jct., Downer's Grove, Edgebrook, Elmhurst, Eola, Goose Island, Hammond, Hayford Jct., Hegewisch, Lombard, McCook Jct., Porter Jct., Riverside, State Line Crossing, Taylor Street, Tower B-17 (Bensenville), and Van Loon Tower. Locomotives from ‘new’ Santa Fe Warbonnets to time-worn C&NW Geeps add special interest to the action seen here. Special treats are the Burlington Northern E-Units and a Belt Railway of Chicago Alco C-424. High-speed railroading rounds out the excitement as we watch Amtrak passenger trains dash to meet their schedules and Santa Fe pig trains speeding toward their destinations. You can expect the unexpected in this 1991 tour of railroading, Chicago style!

$40.00
Up, Over, Around & Through! Powerful diesels pull hard on strings of loaded coal
hoppers, lifting them up steep mountain grades; manned helpers assist on the
rear. Smoke pours from their stacks as mighty diesels lug heavy tonnage through
twisting curves, past color position light signals. The daily routine is almost
as timeless as the mountains themselves. Merchandise freights Q317 and Q316 also
make daily appearances across the mountainous terrain of West Virginia and
Maryland. The battle to keep traffic flowing over Newburg, Cheat, Cranberry, and
Seventeen Mile - legendary grades of Baltimore & Ohio's famous Mountain Sub is
what this show is all about. Starting in Grafton, West Virginia we follow CSX
action east across the Alleghenies to Altamont, Maryland. From the tower at West
Keyser we track westbound trains working up Seventeen Mile grade. The struggle
is not just uphill; easing heavy tonnage down these dangerous slopes is even
more demanding. Shot over three seasons, this program is rich with significant
fall colors, gorgeous winter scenes with deep snow, and the intense greens of
spring. The Appalachian wonderland comes to life as trains follow twisting rails
up, over, around, and through CSX's enduring Mountain Sub. In Colour with Stereo

FREEDOM SPECIAL
85 min
$40.00
In March 2002, Daylight 4449 returned to the rails for the Columbia-Deschutes
Special, a 2-day excursion that took the mighty steamer through the scenic
wonderlands of the Columbia River Gorge and the Deschutes River Canyon. Making
the trip even more remarkable was the Daylight's patriotic paint scheme: the
elegant steamer was repainted for this trip in the same glorious red, white and
blue colors she wore during her American Freedom Train tours of 1975-1976. The
Columbia River Gorge and Deschutes Canyon provided outstanding settings for the
magnificent locomotive and her Freedom Train colors. The Deschutes River Canyon
is an inaccessible and visually stunning site where canyon walls rise 2,200 feet
up from the tracks. 4449 looked gorgeous in her revisited colors, pulling former
Amtrak "Heritage Fleet" and Northwest Rail Museum Daylight cars, unassisted by
diesel helpers! Leaving Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington, the Daylight
traveled the north bank of the Columbia River for 110 miles. Then, turning
south, she continued to Bend, demonstrating her awesome power. Highlights
include fantastic pacing sequences, high bridge crossings, and an added segment
showing the Daylight in all her different paint schemes! Bonus footage: The 1976
Interurban Press film The American Freedom Train (25 min.) is included on the
same DVD. In Color with Stereo Sound and Narration
DVD Special Features: Two stereo soundtracks, one with the natural train sounds,
the other with narration added. The viewer can switch the narration on or off at

MILW THE MILWAUKEE ROAD: VOLUMES 1 - 3
166min
$50.00
Experience The Milwaukee Road of the early 1970s as Pentrex takes you on a
three-volume video adventure along the Rocky Mountain Division! Explore the
entire electrified Milwaukee Road line from Harlowton, Montana to Avery, Idaho
in this exciting three-volume combo DVD.
Volume I: Electric Power on the Milwaukee Road
Alberton, Avery and the St. Paul Pass Pentrex begins its incredible
vintage series on the popular Milwaukee Road and its fascinating electric motive
power with a look at Boxcabs and Little Joes hard at work on the Rocky Mountain
Division in Alberton, Montana and from Avery, Idaho through the St. Paul Pass.
Highlights of this 1972 footage include a profile of the impressive General
Electric-built Boxcab motors which entered service in 1915, and the gutsy Little
Joes which joined the roster in 1950. We'll see both of these powerful and
efficient motors inaction hauling freight up the 1.7 percent grades on the
breathtaking St. Paul Pass, sailing across the majestic trestles, diving into
tunnels, and working in the yards at Alberton and Avery. This was the Milwaukee
Road at its best, just prior to the end of electrification in June of 1974. (47
Minutes)
Volume II: Harlowton to Butte
Pentrex continues its trilogy of films about the Milwaukee Road's
electrified Rocky Mountain Division with a detailed tour of the eastern portion
of the route. The line from Harlowton to Butte, Montana saw plenty of action
during the 1970s. There are thrilling scenes of electric power hard at work
hauling freight over the area's challenging grades. We begin our journey with a
look at the non-electrified line that ran from Harlowton to Lewistown, Montana
to view the diesel powered action on the Rocky Mountain Division. The yards at
Harlowton linked the electrified division with the non-electrified line to the
east and you'll visit the yards to catch the action there. Highlights of our
tour include a look at Vendome Loop and a ride in the cab of a Little Joe on the
way from magnificent Pipestone Pass to Butte. The Little Joes and Boxcabs that
once conquered these awesome grades represented electric power at its finest.
The drama of machines battling spectacular terrain is vividly portrayed in this
exciting tribute to the mighty Milwaukee Road. (41 Minutes)
Volume III: The Rocky Mountain Division
Pentrex takes you on a journey of exploration along the Milwaukee
Road's electrified Rocky Mountain Division in 1973. This historic footage was
shot just months before electrified service was replaced by diesel power. It
covers the entire 440-mile route from Harlowton, Montana to Avery, Idaho. You'll
get a close look at the mighty Boxcabs and gutsy Little Joes that pulled freight
across this beautiful territory, braving steep grades and spanning awesome
gorges. Then you'll follow a work train and its crew for several days as it
repairs track and replaces rail. Highlights of our adventure include a trip to
the busy Lombard area, where Milwaukee track crossed the Burlington Northern.
From mountain prairies to steep, tree covered peaks, the Rocky Mountain Division
was indeed a breathtaking sight, and now the spectacular scenery and nonstop
Milwaukee Road action is available for your viewing pleasure! (78 Minutes)

MONTANA RAIL
LINK ~ 'Big Sky Country 1990'
70 min
$40.00
Pentrex visited the ‘Big Sky’ country of Montana in
1990 to witness the operations of one of the county's newest regional railroads,
the Montana Rail Link. The rugged landscapes of western Montana's Rocky
Mountains presented a challenge to early railroad builders and you will witness
that continuing struggle as MRL operates high tonnage trains across the daunting
grades of both Mullan and Bozeman Passes. Tour the entire length of the
railroad from east to west, starting on the east end at Jones Junction and
travelling to the end of MRL trackage at Sandpoint, Idaho. Both local freights
and Burlington Northern hotshots are seen in action. There's plenty of cab ride
footage, too, as we ride several freights over the road's mountainous terrain.
From interesting locomotives to fantastic scenery, this DVD, released originally
on video in 1990. This DVD includes Chapter Menu.
SOLS SOLDIER SUMMIT ASSAULT 88 min $40.00
At 7,440 feet, the crest of the Wasatch Plateau in Utah is the fifth highest railroad pass on a US transcontinental mainline. It was the highest point for the former Denver & Rio Grande in Utah. Assaulting the steep grades of Soldier Summit takes brute force horsepower. Many trains require both mid-train and rear end helpers. In 2000, when this show was recorded, the diesels of the Rio Grande, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific worked together to muscle trains over the pass. Union Pacific runs here now, but the Utah Railway and BNSF have traffic rights and Amtrak’s California Zephyr runs two trains a day. Classic black and orange Rio Grande SD40T-2s are seen in daily use as helpers on UP’s coal trains, and on the famous “trash train.” During this time, the Utah Railway’s fleet of SD40s was joined by six MK5000s and five Australian-built SD50s. UP’s E-units and a C&NW Dash 8 also make an appearance. Watch as extra power is cut into the trains at Helper for the push up the hill. The descent sees the line change direction 180 degrees at the Gilluly Loops, before continuing west to Provo. Coal is a major commodity here, and you’ll visit UR coal loading facilities. The red rocks of Utah and snow-capped mountains, the famous formations of Castle Gate, the horseshoe curves at Gilluly, and the slide area at Thistle create a spectacular display. This detailed look at UP’s Provo Subdivision offers everything to interest and entertain: rare motive power, challenging terrain, a variety of trains, and fantastic scenery! Produced by Pentrex 2008

Daylights, Cab Forwards & Early Diesels / Flangers,
Spreaders, & Steam Rotary Snowplows
The vaults of the Southern Pacific Railroad provided a treasury of vintage
footage to Pentrex, enough to create two outstanding shows that have been
combined on one new DVD! These 2 titles previously released individually on
video (NTSC format).
Daylights, Cab Forwards & Early Diesels
From the vaults of the Southern Pacific Railroad comes a collection
of rare vintage films never before released to the public. Part of the footage
shown here was shot in 1941 for a promotional movie called "This is My
Railroad", but World War II intervened and in 1947 the film was entirely
re-shot, leaving the original footage unused. You'll see marvellous images of
early GS-class steam locomotives on the Coast Daylight and Noon Daylight
climbing Santa Susana Pass, speeding along the Pacific Ocean and in San Luis
Obispo. Also included is a rare shot of the Sunbeam in Texas. There are many
scenes of the awesome SP Cab Forwards pulling freight on the Coast Line and over
Tehachapi and Donner Passes. These mighty giants are also seen pulling passenger
trains through the Sierra Nevadas. Mikado and Mountain types make appearances as
well. A section on early diesels showcases many of SP's first-generation models,
including Alco PAs; EMD E6s, E7s, F7s and GP7s; and Fairbanks-Morse Trainmasters
in freight service. It's an astonishing collection from the cameras of the SP
cinematographers that will thrill every rail enthusiast!
Flangers, Spreaders, & Steam Rotary Snowplows
Volume II of the Southern Pacific Film Archives presents rare footage
of snow-fighting operations on Donner Pass, filmed by SP company photographers
in the 1950s. Flangers are the railroad's first line of defense when snow starts
to fall in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. You'll climb aboard to watch the snow
fly as the flangers are pulled by steam engines and by SD9 diesels in Black
Widow colors. As the snow deepens, Jordan spreaders are called into action. Then
the real show begins as giant steam-powered rotary plows are called out to do
battle with the deepening drifts. Both cab-forwards and F-units are seen
providing the muscle to push the rotaries over the mountains. SP captured truly
spectacular footage of these fascinating machines by running a camera train just
a few hundred feet ahead of the spinning blades. Freight and passenger trains
run through a winter wonderland pulled by cab-forwards and F-units, and you'll
see Alco PAs being rescued at Yuba Pass after being snowbound with the City of
San Francisco streamliner. It's a collection of vintage film that every railfan
will treasure!

RTH THE RATHOLE (Combo DVD) 148 min $40.00
Named for the 23 tunnels that once embellished the line, the Rathole stretches between Danville, Kentucky and Oakdale Tennessee. High bridges, deep cuts, tunnels, and grades cover this vital link in Norfolk Southern’s system. Pentrex visited this rebuilt route in October 1995 when fall foliage and clear blue skies framed NS’s glossy black diesels in a dramatic show.
Two different looks at railroading
through the Rathole have been combined on this exciting DVD for your enjoyment.
Featured are:
The Rathole: Norfolk Southern diesels
put on amazing shows as they pull heavy tonnage across the Second District of
the CNO&TP. Up to forty trains utilize the track each day! Our tour includes
Kings Mountain, Burnside Bridge, the deep cuts south of Tateville, the tunnels
at Nemo, and the famous high bridge across the New River. Informative narration
identifies all the trains by number, and gives you the detailed story of this
fascinating line.
Through the Rathole Cab Ride: Ride at
the head of Triple Crown #252 in the cab of GP60 number 7149 and experience the
138-mile line from the crew’s perspective. Traveling from Emory Gap, Tennessee
to Danville, Kentucky, you’ll see the tunnels at Nemo, the high bridges across
the New and Cumberland Rivers, and the deep cuts that gave the Rathole its name.
The high priority Triple Crown passes 15 other trains during our ride. When our
train starts back up after stopping to allow a hot piggyback to pass, the
engineer struggles to get the train up the grade as the single engine slips its
wheels and nearly stalls!

STORMY THE STORMY ~ SP's LORDSBURGH DISTRICT 90 min $40.00
In the pre-merger days of 1995, Southern Pacific ran a nonstop parade of trains across its Sunset Route and one of the most scenic stretches was the Lordsburg District between Tucson, Arizona and Lordsburg, New Mexico. Pentrex takes you back to that significant time, when semaphore signals still lined the mostly single-tracked route and spring wildflowers blanketed the ground. Southern Pacific was in the middle of a major track expansion program then. You’ll see the line under different phases as fifty miles of new track, several bridges, and new signals were being added. Once the construction was done, the semaphore signals came down, but we captured these historic artefacts while they were still in use. Big time mainline railroading takes place here. You’ll see hot trains and drag freights working hard across four mountain passes: Mescal, Dragoon, Raso, and Steins. These trains are headed by SD40-s, SD45T-2s, SD45s, B30-7s, even an SD45R in Kodachrome paint. Denver & Rio Grande SD40T-2s, CSX SD60s, and Cotton Belt GP60s and B40s add interest, as well as many colourful leased locomotives. Amtrak’s Sunset Limited travels these rails and you’ll also spot trains from Santa Fe, Union Pacific, San Pedro Southwestern, and Arizona & Eastern. Steep grades, old coaling towers, a major construction project, and the last days of the semaphore signals on one of our favourite fallen flags make The Stormy an exciting program you’re sure to enjoy! Produced by Pentrex 1995. Released on DVD 2008
HIGHLINE RUNNIN' THE HIGHLINE. 107 min $40.00
Railroaders work hard on the Gateway Sub - a place of awesome landscapes and exciting railroad operations. This former Western Pacific highline is known for its isolation. Much of the secluded countryside is dark territory where crews run via Track Warrant Control and manually operate switches after meeting other trains. Travelling aboard a BNSF freight train between Keddie, California and Klamath Falls, Oregon, the journey along the Inside Gateway takes you past Pit River Canyon and other remote areas accessible only by train. The ride along the former Great Northern track above Bieber is a fast-paced run through pine forests and across the semi-arid lands to the north, with stunning vistas of Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta in the distance. The Gateway Sub plays an important role in BNSF's overall strategy and traffic levels are at record highs. Scenes taken from trackside and in the cab show the variety of trains over the line, crossing high trestles, passing through tunnels, crawling up steep grades, and rounding sharp curves on an incredible journey.
DVD Special Feature: Chapter Menu provides instant access to program segments.
UPMAIN UNION PACIFIC'S TRIPLE TRACK MAIN 96 min $40.00
The Kearney Sub.
Travel with Pentrex to the busiest freight mainline in North America. UP's Kearney Sub lies in the heart of central Nebraska. The 110-mile portion of the line from North Platte to Gibbon Junction can see an average of 100 trains a day. In 1999, UP completed construction of a third main track to ease the congestion. Coal is a big reason for the high traffic but with the world's largest classification yards on the west end of the line, many other freights polish these rails as well. We caught some awesome railroading here, including many meets and passes. 92 different trains with all kinds of motive power are captured on the triple track, including distributed power coal trains. C&NW, SP, and Rio Grande pre-merger power can also be seen. This kind of railroading just can't be beat! Produced in 2000.
GNR GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY - VOLUMES 1, 2 & 3 COMBO DVD. 135 min $40.00

Video Rails compiled this collection into a highly prized 3-volume set. Now you can experience the Great Northern Railway with all the improved visual clarity and crispness that DVD provides. The DVD features the iron ore operations of the Great Northern from mines to docks; the diesel locomotives that were common to everyday use across the vast GN system; and GN's widely varied fleet of steam power, from the smallest 0-6-0s to the giant 2-8-8-2s.
VHS produced by Video Rails in 1994, DVD released by Pentrex in 2005. The DVD includes Chapter Menu.
UPT UNION PACIFIC'S MIGHTY TURBINES 46 min $40.00
Union Pacific has always been on the cutting edge of locomotive technology. In the 1950s, it became the only railroad ever to place a fleet of gas turbine-electric locomotives into regular mainline service. Here is the whole turbine story, from rare footage of an early steam turbine experiment in 1938 to the first gas turbine demonstrator in 1948. UP put 55 production units into service, the largest rated at 8,500 horsepower each - the most powerful locomotives ever built! You’ll see the demonstrators and all three production models (including the unique ‘Veranda’ models) hauling tonnage on scenic mainlines, moving through yards, and being serviced in engine terminals alongside steam engines and classic F-units. Along the way you will learn how turbine locomotives operate and will explore the differences and similarities between turbine-electric and diesel-electric units. The saga ends with an experimental coal-burning turbine locomotive built by Union Pacific itself in 1962. A special treat included in this program is a General Electric promotional film produced in 1938 titled ‘The Steam-Electric Arrives!’
VR 045 UNION PACIFIC'S TURBINES OF THE WASATCH 60 min $40.00
In the
decade they were operated, Union Pacific’s 8500-series Gas Turbine Electric
Locomotives earned two nicknames: UP dubbed them the “Super Fleet” for obvious
reasons as they were the largest, most powerful locomotives ever employed by the
railroad. More often the Turbines were referred to as 'Big Blows' due to the
deafening roar of their engines. Thirty of these GE-built giants were delivered
to the UP between 1958 and 1961. Used primarily between Ogden, Utah and Green
River, Wyoming, where the tough grades of the Wasatch Mountains required UP’s
sturdiest power, these monsters could log up to 10,000 miles a month hauling
heavy mixed freight and coal trains. The 8500 series were permanently coupled
six-axle units running on C-C trucks, and their prime mover was the most
powerful ever used in a locomotive. The operating weight for the A and B units
combined was close to 850,000 pounds, yet they could attain speeds of up to 70
mph!
Video Rails take you back to the 1960s with dramatic footage of UP’s Turbines at
work. First and second generation Turbines are briefly introduced and then the
real action begins at the Ogden and Riverdale Yards where you’ll see them being
serviced, watered, sanded, and fueled. You’ll follow an assortment of trains
past Weber Canyon, Uintah, Peterson, Morgan (where you’ll see fantastic pacing
sequences), Devil’s Slide, Henefer, Echo Canyon, Castle Rock, and Wahsatch and
be treated to thrilling scenes along this scenic route before they reach their
eastern boundary at Green River.
The highly corrosive Bunker C fuel that powered the Turbines led to higher than
anticipated maintenance costs and with the rising price of fuel oil at the end
of the 1960s, the Turbines became too expensive to operate. The entire fleet was
traded, sold, or scrapped by 1970. Not one operating unit remains. Yet you can
still enjoy the thunder of these legendary powerhouses in this exciting
presentation! Produced by Video Rails 1992. Released on DVD by
Pentrex 2008

CPATCH HORSE SHOE CURVE / SAND PATCH GRADE (Combo DVD) 135 min $40.00
Horse Shoe Curve and Sand Patch Grade are two Pennsylvania railroading landmarks of enormous popularity, with good reason. They share long history, challenging terrain, heavy traffic, and innovative technologies. Pentrex recorded these famous sites in the late 1980s.
HORSE SHOE CURVE
Step back to 1989 when Conrail was running from 40-60 trains a day through the 3-track curve at this historic site in central Pennsylvania. Most of the action here is led by Conrail but Amtrak makes an appearance as well. The interesting mix of motive power you'll see here includes SD40s, SD40-2s, SD45-2s, and GE C30-7As. Travel to Alto Tower in Altoona, Benny, the Gallitzin Twin Tunnels, AR Tower, MO Tower in Cresson, but most of all you will spend quality time at Horse Shoe Curve itself, the granddaddy of railfan locations! (75 minutes)
SAND PATCH GRADE
Old and new technologies intermingle on this remote yet important route through the Allaghenies. In 1990, when our show was recorded, this former B&O trackage was known as the Mainline Subdivision, a part of CSX's Chicago to Baltimore mainline. CSX trains battled their way upgrade through Brackens, Fairhope, Falls Cut Tunnel, Glencoe, the horse shoe curve at Mance, and Sand Patch Grade itself. See a variety of motive power including GP30s, GP40s, SD50s, the CSX F-unit, and others in an assortment of paint schemes such as B&O, C&O, Clinchfield, Seaboard, Chessie, and classic CSX colours. Tour the tower at Hyndman where vintage Armstrong levers were still in daily use and visit busy SA tower at the crest of Sand Patch Summit. Sand Patch Grade, rich in history, abounds in exciting mainline railroading! (60 minutes)

NEC12 AMTRAK'S NORTHEAST CORRIDOR (Combo DVD) 160 min $40.00
When Pentrex captured this busy line in 1992 so much great footage was filmed that two videos were released. Now both of these shows have been combined on one DVD, bringing you the whole Northeast Corridor story:
NEW YORK CITY TO PHILADELPHIA.
Once owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the corridor is an interesting mix of old and new technologies. Trains roar down the electrified mainline at speeds of up to 125 miles-per-hour. This section of the corridor is governed by Automatic Block Signals and is manually dispatched from Philadelphia. Yet manned block towers dating back to the turn of the century can still be found in use on the line. This is in stark contrast to the welded rail, concrete ties, modern trains and higher speeds achieved on the corridor in recent years. You experience non-stop Amtrak and commuter train activity at Penn Station, Hudson Tower, Newark, Trenton, Princeton Junction and Zoo Interlocking. Also visit busy ‘A’ tower in New York City and Zoo Tower in Philadelphia. Both of these venerable interlocking towers were to be replaced in the near future. The train action between New York City and Philadelphia never lets up.
See over 150 different trains in action during this exciting visit to Amtrak's Northeast Corridor! (80 Minutes)
PHILADELPHIA TO WASHINGTON, D.C.
This scenic portion of the Northeast Corridor is the most modern segment of the system. It is dispatched by CETC, a computer-assisted, state-of-the-art dispatching system. We take you on a private tour of this fascinating control center housed in Amtrak's 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. Trackside, our cameras capture over 100 commuter and Amtrak trains between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Locations include Eddystone, Pennsylvania; Wilmington, Delaware; Perryville, Havre De Grace, Aberdeen and Baltimore, Maryland; Washington, D.C., and many others. Visit Washington Union Station's ‘K’ tower and see how it controls the great variety of trains and locomotives moving into and out of this busy terminal.
Highlighting the tape is a ride in the cab of an AEM-7 locomotive which is at the head of a Metroliner train doing 125 miles-per-hour! (80 Minutes)
DVD Special Feature: Chapter Menu provides instant access to program segments.

MOJAVE SANTA FE'S MOJAVE MAINLINE 75 min $40.00
In 1992, Santa Fe was sending train after train across California’s Mojave Desert, making the Needles Subdivision one of the busiest lines in the nation. Running between Needles and Barstow, this rugged stretch was an essential link in the railroad’s cross-country mainline.
Pentrex takes you back to 1992 to witness the struggle as Santa Fe sends its trains over this remote dessert crossing. From Needles, we head west passing Java, Homer, Goffs, Essex, Cadiz, Amboy, Bagdad, Siberia, Ash Hill, Ludlow, and Daggett to reach Barstow. The long grades of the area’s hills force the engines to work hard. Overlooking Ash Hill, we see heavy loads straining over the grade. The variety of motive power includes
SD45-2s, SDF40-2, SD45s, GP60, GP40X, SD40-2s, FP45s, GP60Ms, GE B40-8s and B40-8Ws. As the newer locomotives flash past our camera on the flatlands, red and silver Warbonnet paint appears to leave brilliant streaks of colour in the air. Pure sets of power in classic yellow-and-blue paint stand out handsomely against the rough countryside. Our tour includes video graphics to help identify the different photo locations throughout this presentation. It’s a view of Santa Fe railroading at its finest!
