GS 002D VIA Fs IN THE
ROCKIES (Re-edited) 60 min
$41.00
'VIA F's In The Rockies' was shot and produced in 1986 by Greg Scholl Video
Productions, the last year the old FP7 and FP9's operated on passenger trains in
Western Canada. In 1992 we made the 4-tape Western Canada Series, and decided it
was time to retire the older video. Now, after re-editing the program, which
includes a fully narrated video, and updated information including the
disposition of the diesels shown, we are excited about releasing this video once
again. Its a newer, improved version, which includes the classic F-Units, and
the Classic "Canadian" on the CPR line over Kicking Horse Pass, which was
discontinued there around 1990.
GS 003D WESTERN RAILS
60 min
$41.00
The 'Western Rails' video starts at the Mississippi River and concludes in
California. There are lots of unusual and famous areas covered, from Kansas to
Colorado, and the Columbia Gorge to the Pacific Ocean. Along the way enjoy
Kansas City Southern, Union Pacific on the now closed Tennessee Pass line in
Colorado, BN and UP in the Columbia Gorge, plus SP and Santa Fe on the Tehachapi
grade and much more.
GS 004D VIRGINIA RAILS
70 min
$41.00
Enjoy contemporary action with CSX and Amtrak trains at the hot spot locations
of Ashland, and Doswell, Virginia. Located on the busy former Richmond,
Fredericksburg, and Potomac north-south mainline, you will see a great variety
of railroad action. What makes Ashland so special The double-track mainline runs
right through the center of town, with streets on both sides of the line. There
are quaint buildings and the Ashland depot which still serves as an Amtrak stop.
Doswell is about 6-8 miles north of Ashland, and there is an old depot(now a CSX
crew building), and a diamond where the old Chesapeake and Ohio Line crosses the
former RF&P. An abandoned tower guards the crossing. There is also a small CSX
yard, and a couple of trains originate here. More than 2 days are covered in the
video. During some of the background information you will even see some vintage
video with old Amtrak trains (F40's), freights with RF&P unit, and a Juice
Train. In addition to regular freight and passenger trains, we will see special
trains, like the Tropicana Juice Train, the Rock Train, the Trash train, and
Amtrak's Autotrain. This is contemporary railroading at its best, in an area
that is seldom seen on rail videos.
GS 005D 6325 RETURN TO STEAM
90 min
$41.00
Former Grand Trunk Western 4-8-4 is restored to operating condition for owner
Ohio Central in the fall of 2001. This video features two of the test runs in
September, and 3 Fall excursions. We begin with a bit of history of the 6325 and
the 4-8-4 class, as we watch the 6325 at the Ohio Central's Morgan Run shops
heading to the mainline for the test run. Also included are a few vintage scenes
of Grand Trunk steam including a couple of 4-8-4's shot by the late Warren W.
Scholl. The first test run is to Dennison and return, with 6325 operating
flawlessly with the short consist on September 5, 2001. On September 11, a
tragic day in American history, we find ourselves along the Ohio Central with
Chief Mechanical Officer Tim Sposato operating an Ohio Central Coal train, as we
learn a little about Ohio Central freight operations and see the coal train. On
September 12, we watch 6325 on its last break-in run, this time with a 13 coach
train. This operation had 6325 pulling the train from Dennison beyond Morgan run
to Frazysburg. On September 22nd, the first public excursion was operated. The
trip operated with the Ohio Central F-Units from Columbus to Dennison, where
6325 was positioned for the return leg to Columbus. This trip went well and
there is coverage from multiple cameras on this and the final weekend in October
2001. The final weekend in October featured another trip from Columbus, this
time to Coshocton, with the 6325 handling the westbound portion once again. The
engine performed flawlessly, including the dual runbys at Trinway. These trips
were sponsored by the Ohio Railway Museum. The next day, the Mahoning Valley
Railway Group sponsored a trip from Dennison to Coshocton, Ohio. This was the
first trip where 6325 would depart in the early morning. With cool weather and
sunshine the morning portion was spectacular. The video ends with the arrival in
Coshocton passing the depot and freight house. This is our first Mainline Steam
video release since 1994-5.
GS 006D REFLECTIONS
60 min
$41.00
"Reflections" is a video that will surely be enjoyed by rail enthusiasts and
folks who just like interesting images. This unique program features every scene
with some form of a train reflected in water or other means. The video is
divided into four main sections:
Part 1 is the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic
railroad where we see reflection scenes shot over an eight year period including
a photo freight switching, and passenger runs.
Part 2 is U.S. Diesels which includes
everything from short line and tourist lines to mainline SP and Amtrak. There
are some real dynamite shots around Klamath Falls, Oregon for example.
Part 3 is Western Canada, and there are some
really beautiful scenes of Canadian Pacific, VIA Rail Passenger Trains, and the
British Columbia Railway. The scenic backgrounds are a real treat here as well.
Part 4 is Mainline Steam, and includes a
huge variety of steam we have photographed over an 18 year period. Favorites
such as 844, 611, 4501, 614, 6325, 700, 152, and 4449 provide memorable sights
and sounds from days gone by. This video / DVD will be one to show anyone who
has a small or great interest in railroading and will be something to enjoy many
times over. The DVD is factory pressed with professional chapter menus, and
extra previews.
GS 007D WESTERN CANADA COMBO [DVD] 120
min
$41.00
SCENIC TRAINS OF BC RAIL:
Travel to the British Columbia Railway in Western Canada to enjoy a great mix of
scenery and railroading. BC Rail freight trains traverse this rugged country
with modern power for the most part, but an occasional old ALCO can still be
seen on the freights and in the Squamish Yard as we watch a rare RS-18 at work.
While the majority of the video covers diesel action, BC Rail also offers
passenger service in the form of RDC's which are self-propelled rail cars. In
addition to RDC cars we'll see the famous Royal Hudson train with 4-6-4 #2860,
and a special appearance of 2-8-0 #3716 on a freight train. There is lot of
action here, including pushers up Birken Hill cut into the middle of the train,
and pristine mountain lakes adding to the already magnificent mountain
backdrops. All this with live audio, and no scenes are duplicated in the Scenic
Trains of Canada video although some were shot during the same time. Nearly all
of the video was shot during good weather as we range from the waters along Howe
Sound north of Vancouver to Kelly Lake north of the Fraser Canyon near Lilloet.
At Pavillion, we see a freight on the huge horseshoe curve, and watch another
train cross the Fraser River.
SCENIC TRAINS OF CANADA: Take a lineside
journey to Western Canada to enjoy a great variety of trains and fabulous
scenery. This video comprises scenes with freight trains and passenger trains on
Canadian Pacific, Canadian National, and the British Columbia Railway. In
addition to mainline diesel action, there is also plenty of steam to enjoy with
Royal Hudson 4-6-4 number 2860 and 2-8-0 number 3716 on the British Columbia
Railway, plus 2-6-2 number 1077 at Ft. Steele, and a rare 2 foot gauge authentic
woodburning steam engine at Prince George. We'll take you to scenic areas like
Kicking Horse Pass where we see the famous Spiral Tunnels, and a detour train of
the famous Canadian on this transcontinental journey. There is a great variety
of freight train action on Canadian Pacific, and on Canadian National near
Jasper, Alberta. Also in the Jasper area we will see VIA Rail passenger trains,
and the Rocky Mountaineer tour train. On BC Rail you will enjoy RDC passenger
trains, freight trains, and steam passenger and freight operations.
GS 008D OHIO STEAM SPECTACULAR
[DVD]
90 min
$41.00
If you enjoy great looking steam action, and
hard-working steam sounds, this is the tape for you. In 2002, the Ohio Central
Railroad, renowned for its restoration of steam engines, sponsored some photo
specials that were the first for former Grand Trunk Railway 4-8-4 #6325. In
June, the big 4-8-4 sported the Grand Trunk front number plates, and authentic
logo on the tender sides, for the first time in over 40 years. This immaculately
restored (by the Ohio Central steam crews), has been a hit with steam fans in
the United States since its first trips in the fall of 2001. The June photo
special featured 6325 on a matched set of passenger coaches operating east of
Dennison, Ohio on the former Pennsylvania Panhandle line. There were many runbys
as 6325 put on a grand show of steam and sound for the limited number of
photographers who rode the special. This was the first photo special for the
6325. In October a two-day event was held on the Ohio Central. A Saturday trip
started with the group of photographers riding the passenger train behind newly
acquired FP9's from Morgan Run to Dennison. In the afternoon the 6325 was
operated on a 50's-era freight train with a red caboose bringing up the rear.
There were some great action shots as the train headed west into the afternoon
sunshine that emerged after a gloomy morning. There were start-up shots, fast
runbys, and a variety of locations with great smoke and sound. On the Sunday
trip, which started at Morgan Run, the valley was saturated with morning fog,
which made for some very nice moody shots of 6325 pulling the freight train
emerging from the soupy moisture. Next we saw ex-Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 #1293
also coming out of the fog. The highlight of the day however, was just west of
Coshocton where the 6325 and 1293 did several different side-by-side runbys.
Many of the shots had 1293 on the passenger train overtaking the freight train
which was in a siding, just like a hot passenger train would do on a mainline
railroad. There were some runbys with the trains staggered, and even one where
they ran nose to nose. We had a camera in the cab of 1293 for several of these
runbys, and you see a neat shot looking out the gangway over the shoulder of the
engineer, as we are passing the freight train on our right. See the 1293
engineer, and look through the window and see the crew of 6325 working to keep
even with the 1293. This is very neat to watch the engineers work the throttle.
In some cases we show the cab scene, followed by the ground-level shot, and on
others we show the cab and ground-level into one sequence. This was very unusual
and exciting action to be sure. Next we headed west to Trinway, and some
individual 1293 and 6325 shots enroute, before 6325 pulled a surprise, by
pulling an empty Ohio Central Coal train over more than 50 hopper cars by our
location. This was done twice, once at speed, and once as a start-up. The day
ended with 2 runbys of 1293 doubleheading with 6325 on the 50's era freight, and
a solo freight shot of 6325. Again, there is tons of great audio, and smoky
action in this tape. This is some of the best steam in the U.S., and hopefully
it will be around for some time to come.
GS 009D ROCKY MOUNTAIN SNOWPLOW [DVD]
90 min
$41.00
Rocky Mountain Snowplow is a fascinating look at
what is perhaps the rarest event in all of railroading . . . the operation of a
steam-powered Rotary Snowplow to open a snowbound railroad. It's early May, and
Colorado and New Mexico's famous Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is still
closed with huge drifts of snow blocking the tracks for several miles! Rotary
snowplow OY, along with K-36 class 2-8-2 steam locomotives 487, 488, and 484 are
dispatched to clear the line of the blockage. Witness some of the finest plowing
ever, as the rotary digs through the deep snow under a clear blue sky! Thrill to
the action as the snowplow train assaults the 10,015 foot Cumbres Pass, on the
former Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad as some locomotives even sported the
famed flying Rio Grande lettering on their tenders. Enjoy a tour of the interior
of the rotary, and see all the gears and rods in motion. You're also treated to
scenes from the cab of engines 484 and 487, as well as many exclusive photo
locations that could only be reached by snowmobile. This is no museum
demonstration run. The assault on Windy Point is incredible with the snow drift
higher than the hood of the Rotary Plow. This event took parts of 4 days, and
culminated with the rotary train stopping because a huge boulder blocked the
line. An awesome video that all will enjoy. This video won a Silver Telly Award,
the highest possible in 1998.
GS 010D 'AMERICA BY RAIL' - THE
HEARTLAND [DVD]
120 min
$35.00
This Telly Award-winning video is an outstanding cross country
journey aboard Amtrak from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco, California. Aboard
the Capitol Limited we travel to Chicago, then continue westward on the
California Zephyr. The scenery is ever changing, and most magnificent through
the Colorado Rockies as we see views from on the train, inside the Cab, and
trackside through this area. With specially composed music by Michael Lynch the
journey on Amtrak is a treat to enjoy. However, this is not all. In addition to
the Amtrak trip, we stop along the way and visit no less than 12 different
railroad excursions with both steam and diesel trains. They include: The
Strasburg Railroad, The Potomac Eagle Excursion, The Western Maryland Scenic,
The Ohio Central, The Boone & Scenic Railroad, Omaha Zoo Railroad, Durango &
Silverton Railroad, The Heber Valley Railroad, Virginia & Truckee, Napa Valley
Wine Train, Santa Cruz and Pacific, and the Roaring Camp and Big Trees Railroad.
There are lots of extras too like a street car ride, and view of San Francisco
Cable cars, and a brief visit to Arches National Park.

GS 013D ROCHELLE DOUBLE TRACK
DIAMONDS [DVD]
150 min
$41.00
Shot in the spring of 2003 the focus is on this
Illinois Hotspot located west of Chicago on the transcontinental mainlines of
Union Pacific (former CN&W), and BNSF (former Burlington). Two tracks of each
railroad cross on diamonds in Rochelle, a city of about 10,000 population, that
has recognized its railroading by building a railroad park, smack in the eastern
quadrant of the diamonds. We cover the area with two cameras and show you ALL
the trains in the daylight covering 2 days of operations. We even see some track
equipment, including a surprise visit by a rail grinding train.
GS 014D RIDING THE NARROW GAUGE
IN THE 1950's [DVD]
55 min
$41.00
This 8mm footage is just about 50 years old as the
video coverage dates to a 1954 visit to the Denver and Rio Grande Western Narrow
Gauge by my father Warren W. Scholl. First he rides the Rocky Mountain Railroad
Club excursion, which includes a 3 day journey to Durango from Alamosa, then a
roundtrip to Silverton. There is some interesting footage as much was shot from
the caboose near the engines. In 1956 another trip was made with the entire
family, and another Rocky Mountain RR Club trip to Durango and back. Then we see
some freight action in addition to what we see from the train ride. There is
nice pacing of a doubleheader and you see the fireman shoveling coal into the
firebox. Then it?s on to Durango again, and a ride on the first Silverton train
of the year, which includes dumping ballast along the tracks and other
interesting action. Historical narration and appropriate music add to the show.
I think dad would have liked to see these out for others to enjoy, which is
better than the films rotting away in the closet where nobody would ever see
them.
GS 015D DM&IR YELLOWSTONES
- GIANTS OF STEAM [DVD]
30 min
$35.00
The massive Yellowstone type 2-8-8-4 locomotives
operated by the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range railroad in Minnesota were among
the largest steam locomotives to ever run, and in 1958 and 1959 they were still
hard at work. When other railroads in the United States were either entirely
dieselized or nearly so, the DM&IR Yellowstones soldiered on for a few extra
years. In this video, which was from original 16mm film shot by the late Maynard
Laing, we visit the area on different trips, and enjoy pacing, lineside, and
engine servicing with these famous locomotives. Incredible sequences where two
of these monsters pass is hard to imagine, and what makes it all the more unique
is that Mr Laing?s longtime friend, Elwin Purington was there with his reel to
reel audio tape recorder capturing all the sounds of these engines. Now some 40
years later we have merged the sights and sounds together for an enjoyable
experience that will explore the history and excitement of the DM&IR
Yellowstones.

RAYONIER - THE LAST STEAM LOGGER [DVD]
30 min
$35.00
Maynard Laing
ventured to Washington's Olympic Penninsula to capture the end of an era, with
steam locomotives working the forests hauling out fresh log trains to the mill.
The Rayonier mainline was 45 miles long, and featured several serviceable
engines including articulated 2-6-6-2's. Two of them are seen on log trains
including #14 and ex-Sierra Railway #38. In addition we are treated to 2-8-2 #90
in operation, and see some scenes at Railroad Camp, which was the engine
facility for the steam locomotives. Mr. Laing has some very good footage here
which includes operations in 1960 and 1961. There is coverage of the ceremonial
last steam runs, and even a run of engine #90 on a special run for a TV crew.
Mr. Laing not only preserved these images, but he also purchased engine #70, a
2-8-0, which is seen on a freight train being towed to a new home.
GS 017D SNOW PLOW WITH CN
F7s [DVD]
65 min
$41.00
In the winter of 1987
we ventured to Canada to capture some incredible railroad action. Stratford,
Ontario is our base as we enjoy some plow runs on the branch lines that Canadian
National (CN) owned. These lines only saw sporadic freight runs, thus when the
winds blew the snow around, the railroad quickly became covered to the point a
snow plow extra had to be dispatched to clear the line. Quantity of snow is not
the problem, it is the wind, causing drifting, which fills the cuts and valleys.
Powering the CN plow is a pair of Canadian National first generation F7s along
with the orange snowplow. See how the plow is operated, and even get a short
ride inside as they plow a siding. First, we catch a run to Wingham, Ontario.
On this run we record one of our signature video shots, as we get pummeled by
the flying snow (This scene landed on a TV blooper show many years ago).
After the thrill of plowing the Wingham line, the next day a freight run is
made to Wingham, and the crew granted our request by running the F7s instead of
the usual GP9. A couple of days later the plow is called again to clear the
entire line north to Owen Sound, and finally another trip to Wingham, where the
plow derails clearing a siding. This title has some incredible snowfighting
scenes, as the plow roars into the snow-covered areas to make the snow fly.
Clouds of snow are blasted with shear force. Unusual railroad action!
Videotaped in 1987, re-edited, and updated in 2004.

STEAM IN HUNTINGTON [DVD]
90 min
$41.00
Watch
the dramatic action of two big mainline steam engines operating side-by-side as
the feature attraction of the 1991 NRHS convention in Huntington, West Virginia.
You'll enjoy the incredible sight of Pere Marquette 2-8-4 #1225 on a passenger
train, running pilot to pilot with a similar engine, Nickel Plate 2-8-4 #765. In
addition there are two trips with N&W 1218, and other steam trips.

Imagine
if you could turn the railroad clocks back to say 1950 and relive the days of
Rio Grande narrow gauge freight trains storming over Cumbres Pass. Well in the
fall of 1992, photographer John Craft, organized a series of 5 trips over a
one-week period that was the first time such trips were operated since the last
Rio Grande freights of 1968. Trains with pusher engines, mid-train helpers, and
3-engine trains make this a special video!

NORTHERN PACIFIC - FAREWELL TO STEAM [DVD]
30 min
$35.00
In the
early 1950's steam locomotives were being replaced rapidly by diesels on most
railroads and Northern Pacific was no exception. Fortunately photographers like
Mr. Maynard Laing, of Bellevue, Washington chronicled many of the final days of
steam in his area including the famous Casey Jones excursions with some of the
last NP steamers in the Seattle area.

NORFOLK & WESTERN STEAM FREIGHTS [DVD]
60 min
$41.00
These films were
shot between 1954 and the end of steam on the Norfolk and Western. Most of the
films were shot on the Cincinnati to Portsmouth line, the western end of the
Norfolk & Western Railway. Steam freight operations ended in 1956, but Mr.
Scholl would continue to seek out steam in places like Portsmouth after 1956,
and even went into the depths of West Virginia to places like Ieager, and
Williamson to see steam in the final days of operation. Most of the film
centres around the Batavia area. There are time freights, and coal trains, plus
locals switching sidings. There is even one scene where a freight car is being
poled in Batavia Siding, an operation now forbidden on all railroads. You will
also be treated to a segment featuring nearly 50 black and White images that
were enlarged just for this show. These were images made by Warren Scholl of N&W
steam, and includes images of the very last runs from Claire to Portsmouth in
1956, documenting an end of an era. There is music and narration, but no fake
train sounds, since none existed obviously when these colour movies were made.
We have included tons of interesting information about the locomotives, the
operations, and locations that are shown, and appropriate background music is
used to add to the enjoyment. This part of the N&W was seldom filmed, as most
easterners went to Blue Ridge, and other more popular locations. The DVD also
features some comparison shots, showing shots from the old film, and a
contemporary diesel shot at the same location. Today, the Peavine, as it is
called, is severed, and only sees a local train that operates about half of the
line, a far cry from the multitude of trains in the mid-1950's. Music

GS 022D CHASED BY A STEAM
TRAIN - Vol. 1 & 2 [DVD-R] 180 min
$55.00
A Passenger Train in the Rockies Vol. 1 (90 min):
Take a unique journey on the rails of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad
in the Rocky Mountains, as we view a steam passenger train from in front of the
train. Through special arrangements with the railroad we chartered a passenger
train, and an escort train to use as a camera platform and videotaped the entire
trip from Chama, New Mexico to Cumbres, Colorado. where the Pass is reached at
an elevation of 10,015 feet. Our train resembles the former Rio Grande San Juan
passenger train complete with authentic lettering on K-36 locomotive #484 as we
view this awesome sight climbing through the Rockies. As we enjoy the scenery
and natural train sounds, we will point out a few of the sights along the way,
but you will see the train nearly the entire journey. The trip is incredible as
you climb a 4% grade and into the snow cover during this late spring run that
was made before the tourist season began. You will hear load exhaust from the
484 and watch the entire route unfold behind you. The tape is quite
mesmerizing to say the least!
A Freight Train in the Rockies Vol. 2 (90 min): What's better than a passenger train trip chasing you? Well how about a second trip up the mountain, but this time engine #484 (a 2-8-2) pulls a freight train of 10 cars and caboose. This is maximum tonnage for this locomotive on this piece of railroad, and 484 puts on quite a show. Several times the engine is very close behind our escort train, and it is quite exciting to see and hear every exhaust, whistle, and every curve as the train snakes along the Rocky Mountain ledges behind you. The higher we travel in elevation the deeper the snow gets, and by the time we reach Cumbres Pass, at 10,015 feet we are in a deep trench of snow. You'll start from the town of Chama and feel like you are back in time, as you experience a view that few people have ever been privileged to see. If you like steam trains, then it just doesn't get any better than the action on these two volumes. Hi-Fi Sound both Volumes
GS 023D CHICAGO &
NORTHWESTERN - MAINLINE WEST [DVD-R] 150 min $55.00
This title covers a
section of railroad which is one of the busiest in the United States, the former
Chicago and Northwestern line from Chicago west to Omaha and Fremont. The line
handles Chicago commuters as well as transcontinental freight traffic, and we'll
see both in this title, which was done in 1993 before Union Pacific had complete
control of the C&NW. There is a wide variety of motive power, ranging from 1950
GP7s to new diesels built in the 1990s. Some of the footage was filmed during
the great flood of 1993, see the California Zephyr detouring over the C&NW with
Metra E-units leading the train as well as many other detour trains, high water
is very evident. See Proviso Yard in Chicago where we visit the hump and
container yards, then see commuter action, including a cab ride. See hot spots
like Rochelle, Illinois where the C&NW and BN diamond features loads of action.
Then we take you westward through Illinois, and Iowa to the better locations
such as Boone, and the Kate Shelly Bridge, and onwards to Missouri Valley where
the C&NW splits to go to Omaha or due west to Fremont and the Union Pacific
connection. The title covers 3 complete divisions in 3 states and multiple
cameras were used. Over 10 other railroads can be seen during the course of the
DVD, and we even include a couple of historic flashback surprises. Broadcast
quality with live stereo sound.

ILLINOIS JUNCTIONS - Vol. 1 [DVD-R]
120 min
$41.00
Take a visit to Eastern Illinois to enjoy several
diamonds or cross-overs where you will see lots of action and variety of
railroads. First we visit Watseka, which has the old Chicago and Eastern
Illinois Mainline going south from Chicago. This track is shared by Union
Pacific and CSX, so the doubletrack line sees trains from both railroads. The
former Toledo, Peoria, and Western, which is now Rail America goes east-west on
a diamond crossing the UP/CSX. See an Alco in operation at the Watseka Grain
Company, also power on mainline trains. Next we head a bit further west to
Gilman. See Illinois Central motive power, as well as CN, and Grand Trunk.
There is a good variety of action here including a Norfolk Southern train, with
a BNSF unit coming in from Clinton. Besides busy freight traffic see two Amtrak
trains. Visit Tolono, where the Illinois Central Mainline crosses the Norfolk
Southern?s line to Decatur from Ft. Wayne. This is a busy NS line, on the
former Wabash Railroad. Once again a variety of power is seen on the CN/IC
line. Further east is Sidney, where the same Norfolk Southern line we saw at
Tolono, crosses the Union Pacific's Chicago-St. Louis Line. There is a ton of
train variety here. The over-under location is a break from the diamonds also.
Tuscola is another interesting diamond where the CN (Former IC) line crosses
the Union Pacific line. In addition a branch line of the CSX connects with the
UP to cross the diamond, then diverges back to its own line. We catch a train
on two different days on the CSX, including one with a transfer caboose. Amtrak
is also viewed here with the north and southbound Illinios trains. Filmed in
2003 using 2 camera crews.

ILLINOIS JUNCTIONS - Vol. 2 [DVD-R]
120 min
$41.00
In Illinois Junctions 2 we visit 4 major locations,
plus 2 locations are visited briefly. The first location is Effingham, in
Southern Illinois. Here the mainline of the former Illinois Central(now CN),
goes south through town, and so does the BNSF and Norfolk Southern, which
parallels the CN line for several blocks in downtown Centralia. See a variety
of NS trains, as well as several BNSF coal trains. Most of these coal trains
have distributed power units on the rear. NS uses the BNSF to pass through
Centralia, and both BNSF and NS cross the CN on a diamond before splitting apart
south of town. Trains on BN and NS tend to run a bit slower than CN, due to
speed restrictions. We also have a special segment watching an older BNSF unit
do some switching. We head a few miles north to Odin, where the former
Baltimore and Ohio Cincinnati to St. Louis line crosses the former IC line. Now
it?s CSX crossing CN. See a CSX auto train take the siding, and the crewmember
throws the switch manually. This train causes a northbound Amtrak train to stop
south of the diamond, so we get it departing northward. Moving north we are
north of Champaign, at Chenoa and catch two Amtrak trains within 10 minutes,
since they had a meet just south of town. The Rail America line crosses here on
a diamond and we see the old depot along the former GM&O line, which is now
Union Pacific. Heading east we visit Woodland Junction. This is located 5
miles south of Watseka, where we visited in Illinois Junctions. Woodland
Junction is where the C&EI lines split, and Union Pacific heads east toward St.
Louis, and CSX heads south toward Evansville, Indiana. See UP trains, including
some with WC, SP, and Cotton Belt Power. Travelling south, a visit was made to
Danville, where the CSX line from Woodland Junction crosses Norfolk Southern?s
Mainline between Ft. Wayne and Decatur. Several trains on each line were seen,
including 4 straight westbounds on NS. Our final stop is in Effingham, where
the CN mainline (Former IC from Chicago to New Orleans), crosses the former
Pennsy line, which is now CSX. Several CSX trains interchange with CN here, as
well as CN yard engines are seen. We see several trains on both railroads in
the afternoon. The next morning we are back for more action in low morning
sunshine to watch trains rattle over the diamond once more, but from a different
angle. As in Illinois Junctions, Illinois Junctions 2 has a lot of variety of
railroads, trains, and locations. Illinois is unique in having nearly every
major railroad, most of which are seen in these videos.

GS 026D NEW YORK CENTRAL STEAM FINALE [DVD-R] 65 min $41.00
New York Central Steam Finale covers the Ohio and Indiana areas that Mr. Warren W. Scholl shot on 8mm colour home movies in the mid-1950's. Mr. Scholl resided in the Cincinnati area, and would film lots of steam in the area. In addition to filming trackside around Cincinnati he would ride New York Central passenger trains to Chicago on business trips. Thus, we see several trips aboard the James Whitcombe Riley, and the Cincinnati Special to and from Chicago. Power was exchanged for Illinois Central diesels in Kankakee and this is shown several times as well as engine changes at Indianapolis, and other stops, plus views from the train. This was the last stronghold for New York Central Hudsons. In addition to seeing Hudsons on the Cincinnati to Chicago line, we also see a few glimpses of them at Toledo and Bellefontaine, plus we see quite a few Mohawks on passenger trains north of Cincinnati around Sharon Yard. We even see a Niagara or two around Cincinnati. Freight action is covered quite well as we see the area north from Cincinnati to Sharonville, including several transfer freights, and the L&N transfers to Decoursey Yard in Kentucky. There is even one L&N transfer with an L&N diesel and NYC 2-8-2. Another NYC freight has lightning stripe F-Units and a NYC 2-8-2 headed north from Sharon Yard. There is also hump yard and switching shots, as well as roundhouse and turntable action. The last segment includes freights west of Cincinnati, including the trains passing through B&O's Storrs Yard, and over course Riverside yard. There are numerous scenes of helpers being coupled at Riverside and departing as well as some trains arriving from the west. This was nearly all 4-8-2 territory, with some 2-8-2 helpers. As we proceed west we see several chases along River Road, and see helpers at Valley Junction, another location where helpers were attached for the climb to Sunman via Guilford Hill. Also we see a train coming off the Whitewater Valley line at Valley Junction as well as a meet with a Hudson on a passenger train. There is also some footage of the Ohio River Coal company with an 0-4-0 working some coal cars. This was the last steam to operate in Cincinnati. Included is information regarding the years built, and retirement dates of engines that can be identified. At the end we included a segment documenting several of the last steam runs in the Indiana and Ohio areas for the different types of locomotives. This is where New York Central steam ended. Like 95% of all old steam film, there was never any audio recorded. Therefore we have included a wealth of informative narration, and appropriate music. These are not top of the line quality commercial films, but rather home movies. However, it is interesting material, and better to be seen by those who appreciate the subject matter, than to have it sit in the closet for nobody to ever see.

GS 034D RIO GRANDE STEAM IN THE 1960s [DVD-R] 60 min $41.00
Travel back in time with us to explore the Denver and Rio Grande Western (Rio Grande) narrow gauge operations between Alamosa, Chama, Durango and Silverton. These scenes are from expertly shot 16mm films.
There is a nice mix of passenger and freight operations in this program. In 1957 see K27 number 464 as the Durango yard engine, switching coaches in what would be its last season of operation on the Rio Grande. In 1961 the Becker brothers made a trip to narrow gauge land, and start by photographing a passenger special from Alamosa, and then west of Chama, photograph a doubleheaded freight toward Chama in the late afternoon, followed by more freight operations. See a variety of Durango activities with shots north of Rockwood along the High-Line where the train traverses the ledge high above the Animas River Canyon. Plenty of freight action, see doubleheaders out of Durango up Bocea hill, and headed east toward Chama. There is also a doubleheader seen Westbound between Arboles and Durango. Several runs up the 4% grade from Chama to Cumbres are shown. There is doubleheader action from Alamosa to Antonito, where trains were split, and an engine inserted mid-train for the run west to Cumbres. On one such run from Alamosa we see the first run for engine 492, along with 484, after 492 was repaired from its collision with a huge boulder a month or so earlier near Navajo. Its 85% color, with only one section being black and white, which was due to a processing malfunction. Like 95% of all vintage films, there was no train sounds, so we have added some nice music, and set-up narration about important aspects of the footage.

Tons of great steam abounds with much of the action around Winnipeg and especially the Portage la Prairie area where the CN and CP cross at a diamond, and run through the town a block apart. There is lots of exciting and historic action in this final tape in our Canadian Steam series.
GS 040D GARRATTS OF ZIMBABWE - 1990 (DVD-R) 60 min $41.00
Travel to Africa, noted for big game animals, and discover some of the largest steam locomotives surviving on the continent. The unique articulated steam locomotives known as ‘Garratts’ still thrive in the country of Zimbabwe, which is now the worlds last stronghold of these interesting locomotives. 4-8-2 + 2-8-4 Garratts on both freight and passenger trains. Watch Garratts work from the capitol city of Bulawayo to Victoria Falls on the Thomson Junction line and on the Plumtree line which interchanges with Botswana. Also visit the rebuilding shops and learn about the future of steam in Zimbabwe. Be treated to activity in the shops as workers rebuild locomotives just like they did in North America 50 years ago. Watch as hot rivets get ‘pitched’ across the shop and land with perfect accuracy for the worker to install them. Hear from the shop foreman, and Dave Putnam, the head of the Bulawayo roundhouse about steam's future. Besides great lineside action, you'll get a short cab ride in a Garratt, see Victoria Falls (World's largest), and see some elephants at one of the popular game parks. This video was shot by Randy Scholl on a 1990 trip to the area. The unique Garratts are awesome machines.
GS 041D STEAM IN ST. LOUIS - 1990 (DVD-R) 60 min $41.00

Excursions included hometown Frisco 4-8-2 #1522 on a roundtrip to Newburg, Missouri, and a trip for 844 to Findlay, Illinois. After the convention festivities there was a special treat, as 844 headed back west, with 1522 as the helper engine as they doubleheaded to the National Museum of Transport at Kirkwood where 1522 is kept. There is great coverage of the doubleheader which was one of highlights of the week. Two camera crews covered these events which can never be repeated with these locomotives.
GS 042D EARLY DIESELS (DVD-R) 85 min $44.00
This video contains a wealth of variety. First generation and some newer diesels are depicted in operation between 1987 and 1989. See F-Units on freight and Passenger trains, Alcos on freight, GE 70-ton, GP7s and GP9s and ALCO FPA4s on Passenger trains. In addition we'll see some modern railroading for the time intertwined with the everyday operations of the older units. To find many of these historic diesels operating in the late 1980s is remarkable, and in fact many that were videotaped are no longer in existence, making this a historical video. The video takes us to the east in New England, and west to Colorado and Arkansas including 9 states and Canada. Here is a listing of what is included. Wyoming & Colorado RR FP7s on Passenger train, Louisiana & North West RR F7 on freight, Little Rock and Western RR Alco C420 on freight, Monon FP7s on Passenger from Indianapolis to Cincinnati (ex-Milwaukee Road), Southern Railway FP7s on passenger train (since sold), Bangor & Aroostook RR GP7s and GP38s, Belfast & Moosehead Lake RR GE 70-ton, St. Lawrence and Atlantic RR GP9s, Twin States Alco RS3 (Lamoille Valley RR), VIA RAIL Canada Passenger trains with FPA4s, FP9, and LRC (Winter action), Canadian National F7s,GP9s,SW1200,etc, Canadian Pacific Alcos and much more. GS 043D STEAM ROTARY (DVD-R) 90 min $41.00
This 1991 video depicts snow-clearing operations on the former Rio Grande Narrow Gauge (now Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR) in northern New Mexico and Colorado. The rotary OY is steam operated, but can only power a blade, thus locomotives are required to push it ahead. The southern Rockies are the fabulous scenery for this incredible event as K-36 locomotives, 487 and 488 push the rotary higher into the mountains to clear drifts as high as the top of the Rotary. The sound of the engines and sights are incredible as we here all the whistling signals, and roaring exhausts. It took one day to plow the few miles of snow to Cumbres Pass (10,015 ft) and a second day to plow eastward to Osier. On the second day a special passenger train was run for photographers. See scenes from two camera-crews, and learn how the plow works from the chief mechanical officer of the railroad, John Bush. Unique and timeless scenes are recorded as crews dig out switches and the train operates in trenches of snow. This was our first rotary video.
GS 044D GEARED DOUBLEHEADER (DVD-R) 45 min $41.00
Washington State's Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad is the location of this presentation which features the two rarest types of geared steam locomotives. Heisler #90, a 90-ton, 3-truck locomotive built in 1930 is joined by the newly restored Climax #10. The Climax is ex-Hillcrest Lumber Co. which operated on Vancouver Island, and was the last standard gauge Climax locomotive ever built. Enjoy the preparations at the Mineral, Washington shop, which includes a visit with an engineer, and ride in the Heisler, and a daring shot of the Climax from underneath it as we shoot from a drop-pit in the shop. You can see all the gears, and even the grease on them, from this scary location. The real excitement is the actual excursion train which ran from Elbe, Washington south to Morton and it was the first run of the newly restored Climax which double-headed with the Heisler behind it. During the run, we are treated to a special runby with the Climax pulling a string of empty log cars, much like she did in her first tour of duty as a logging engine. There is fabulous action as these engines sound like they are going 5 times faster than they really are. They work a 3% grade southbound near Mineral, and more grades northbound from Morton. The Morton line has had track problems and trains no longer operate on this scenic mountain section. You will enjoy this video tremendously if you like logging engines, and great steam action on a scenic railroad. It sure is different from the big mainline excursion engines.
GS 045D 2765 ON THE C&O (DVD-R) 60 min $41.00
In 1993, Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765 was transformed with a few modifications into a C&O 2-8-4 as both Lima-built locomotive types were similar. We begin with a brief background segment with Rich Melvin explaining some of the changes. Then the action begins, as 2765 departs Cincinnati and historic Cincinnati Union Terminal for a trip to Russell, Kentucky and return. There is a nice sequence pacing the engine over the C & O (road & Railroad) bridge crossing the Ohio River, and several nice speedy runbys on this cold damp day. Then on the return trip we are given a rare treat-a cab ride from Russell for several miles and the speedometer hits 60 mph, something rarely seen on steam in the United States these days. After the Cincinnati trip, we see 2765 on a one-way trip to Huntington, where it operates on the New River Train in October. These are the usual fine trips, with great weather and fall colours. The 2-8-4 looks good and sounds great as it blasts along on the former Chesapeake & Ohio Railway trackage now part of CSX. Finish with a lovely fall colour vista shot at Hawks Nest overlook, deep in the New River Gorge. This is one of our favourite DVDs and we think you will like it also. This was the last time the engine operated before being stored.
GS 046D MONTANA COMBO (DVD-R) 95 min $41.00
MONTANA RAILS (60 min): We begin our venture at Paradise, Montana where the 4th Subdivision and the 10th Subdivision converge. A freight arrives off the 4th Sub, while another heads east over the 10th Subdivision. A special passenger train with a trio of older GP9's departs and is followed eastward over the 10th Subdivision and Evaro Hill toward Missoula. The following day we continue east from Missoula toward Helena, and encounter a variety of trains and of course Mullan Pass. More time was spent in the area to photograph freight operations over Mullan pass which is the steep grade west of Helena. Helper sets are stationed at Helena for this brutal climb, and helpers can be seen on the front, in the middle, and sometimes in more than one spot. Helpers are often used to aid trains climbing the west slope as well. See a variety of Montana Rail Link diesel power including the GP9's on the passenger train, plus freight power including SD40-2's,
SD45-2's and even a rare F45 on a local freight. There is plenty of variety on BNSF freight trains also, including Santa Fe, Burlington Northern, and of course BNSF painted units including the ‘Pumpkin Orange’ which are seen on a Trough Train (coal train). Most of the better locations are shown, and a variety of freight traffic from freights with Boeing aircraft fuselages to locals and hot container trains. This DVD combines a lot elements that make for a great and entertaining feature.
BN's MARIAS PASS (35 min): Located in northern Montana along the southern rim of Glacier National Park, this Burlington Northern mainline (formerly Great Northern Railway) route has the distinction of being the northern-most crossing of the Rocky Mountains in the United States. Videotaped in the fall of 1990 you get to see a colourful mix of both scenery and trains on this mountain railroad. Pusher diesels from Essex assist many eastbound trains to the summit of Marias Pass at 5,213 feet above sea level. Our DVD shows coverage from east of Whitefish where there are several tunnels, to Browning, Montana which covers the best part of the line. Besides Burlington Northern locomotives there are also some GATX and LMX lease units to be seen. We also get to see a few early morning shots of Amtrak's Empire Builder on a cold snowy morning. There are a lot of interesting trains and a great variety of locations that feature tunnels, bridges, snowsheds, and great Montana Scenery. Now that this is BNSF, the DVD is historic in many ways.
GS 047D SP 4449 ~ 'THE DAYLIGHT' (DVD) 80 min $41.00
Southern Pacific Class GS-4 #4449 stars in this 1989 video presentation. The famous red, orange, and black 4-8-4 makes a run to Los Angeles for the Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal celebration. First we see the engine in Portland at the roundhouse and turning on the turntable prior to the run. Then we follow the 4449 and a short train for two days from Portland to Klamath Falls, and then on toward Oakland. Highlights are scenes in the Cascades, and the morning shot at Warden with one of the best reflection shots in the water we have ever made. At Oakland more cars are added for the excursion to Santa Barbara, where we see some nice scenes along the Pacific at Surf, California. The last day 4449 runs to Los Angeles, capped by a side-by-side performance next to Union Pacific 4-8-4 #8444 entering LA Union Station. Next we see the display diesels at the depot, and the departure of both trains up Cajon Pass as they storm the grade side-by-side once more as throngs of spectators watch the event. Then we follow 4449 to Bakersfield, and the last day on to Fresno. There is a nice cab ride from Black Butte to Dunsmuir (some 60 mph), and some good pacing scenes north of Bakersfield to make this an action-packed video of one of the most famous U.S. engines.
GS 048D FIRST TRAIN TO TOLTEC (DVD) 85 min $41.00
This DVD takes you behind the scenes as the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad opens a blockaded railroad, and then we charter a special freight train just for YOU! Our presentation takes up where the Rotary train left off. We were invited along on a special work train dispatched to clear a boulder that sits squarely on the tracks. A crew has blasted the rock with dynamite then the work train with its loader is used to clear the rubble off the tracks so repairs can be made. This is very unusual, and in remote Colorado high country. Next we charter a special, authentically lettered ‘Rio Grande’ freight train, just for YOU! We start out of Chama, New Mexico with K-37 2-8-2 #497 in the lead with good size freight train headed for the summit of Cumbres Pass. Engine 484 is a rear helper coupled in just ahead of the caboose, as they tackle the 4% grade which includes a stop for both engines to water at the Cresco tank. As elevation increases to about 9500 feet, the snow deepens from where the Rotary had cleared a few days earlier, and the freight crests 10,015 foot Cumbres Pass in a 6 foot trench of snow. Later our train encounters a huge drift of snow near Osier, and our helper engine, now running ahead of the train, plows the snow several times, and derails. After re-railing we head east to catch a snow-covered locomotive at several locations, including the Toltec Tunnel. We are the first train of the 1997 season to reach this location, a remote spot in the Rockies on the narrow gauge with a steam-hauled freight train.
A great companion title to our Rocky Mountain Snowplow [GS 009D, $41.00.00]
GS 049D SOUTHERN PACIFIC VINTAGE STEAM (DVD) 60 min $41.00
This program was original intended to be on the East Bay Area of California, but it has been widened to include other things. We begin in San Jose, California, and work our way up to Oakland. Many commuter trains with Pacific's are seen, as well as war-time black Daylights, Cab Forward's, 4-8-2's, and smaller power on locals. Then we divert to the Altamont Pass line and see several Cab Forward articulateds, and even a 4-10-2 leading one train. Then we continue to Oakland, and see some trains around San Francisco before heading eastward along San Pablo Bay, and a visit to the San Ramos Branch and see some old film of smaller branch line operations. Next we have a Daylight section with a variety of films of Daylight trains in action, mostly with Daylight paint. Next we move to a segment that is east of Los Angeles and includes a lot of 1930's and 40's material mostly on the line to El Paso. There is a wide variety of train action in this segment. Next we see a variety of various SP images before closing out the show with several scenes of 4-6-2 2467 en route to Sacramento in 1999, and with 2472 at Hunters Point in 2001. There is something for everyone in this show, especially if you like SP Steam.
GS 050D RAIL INDUSTRY FILMS (DVD) 90 min $41.00
This selection of old films contains 4 different ones that are 16mm original company films. The FIRST is a Steel Company film and is all about the testing of their special wheel sets (Trucks), made for the railroads. This shows a test car, and several trains including steam and diesel. It was made in the 1940's or early 1950's. The SECOND one (also in Colour), is called ‘The Power to Stop’, and is about the brakes on passenger train coaches, and other cars. This shows a Milwaukee Road Hiawatha style engine pulling the test car up to 100 mph, and the car is uncoupled at speed to make the brake tests. Both of these films have narration. The THIRD film is a Pennsylvania Railroad B&W silent film called ‘On to Washington’. This rare film was made in the 1930's, and shows PRR routes all over the midwest, then concentrates on Washington DC sightseeing. This film was silent, and we added background music. It does show some passenger car interiors which is quite interesting, such as the Porter, the dining car, and lounge cars. The FOURTH film is a gem, by New York Central called ‘The Steam Locomotive’. It is 20 minutes and B&W. It’s all about the famous New York Central Hudson (4-6-4), one of the most recognizable engines on the planet at the time. You see servicing the engine, as well as backshop work, roundhouse inspections, and other aspects that go into making these engines run properly. There are several operating views from inside the cab to side-by-side scenes in action. The Steel films are in colour while the PRR and NYC (1948), are in black and white.
GS 051D GREAT STEAM TRAINS COMBO (DVD) 120 min $44.00
A combination of two one-hour programs: Great Steam Trains Volume 1 and Volume 2, we see four locomotive
segments in each program, and a wealth of steam variety.
VOLUME 1: Start with a visit to New England and 0-6-0 #7470 at the Conway Scenic Railroad during fall colours. This railroad features a historic depot, roundhouse, and pleasant countryside. Next we head to Frankfort, Indiana and see two roundtrips with Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 #587 from Frankfort to Muncie, Indiana. We then visit the cab of Norfolk and Western 2-6-6-4 #1218 and get a tour of the interior from the engineer and fireman who explain the controls in the cab between excursion runs. Our last segment in Volume One is Norfolk and Western 4-8-4 #611 on a trip from Cincinnati to Portsmouth in 1990. The engine stalls on Peebles Hill and has to have the rails sanded by hand to inch its way to the summit, an incredibly rare sight on mainline rails.
Volume 2: Travel to New Brunswick, Canada and the Salem & Hillsborough Railroad. First wee see ex CN 4-6-0 #1009 on several trips, both passenger and special freight trains arranged for our cameras. Then we enjoy rare scenes of ancient 4-4-0 #29 in action on passenger trains. This video, shot in 1989, was the very last steam action for #29 as it later burned in a 1995 shop fire and is now on display in front of the CPR headquarters in Calgary. The next segment is a baseball special from St. Albans, WV to Cincinnati, Ohio with Nickel Plate 2-8-4 #765 with some nice mainline running and a neat arrival view from atop Cincinnati Union Terminal. The last segment is a winter Santa Claus train with Kentucky Central 2-6-2 #11 from Paris to Maysville, Kentucky in 1990. Nice sunshine and a Christmas wreath adorn the front of #11 while Santa waves to all from the rear platform of this festive steam special.
This is great steam action that can never be repeated as most of these do not run today. Menu feature allows segments to be selected. Live steam audio with minimal narration.
GS 052D PERE MARQUETTE 1225 FREIGHT SPECIAL (DVD) 98 min $41.00
This video was shot in April 2007, and features a weekend of photo freights from Owosso, Michigan which is the home of the Steam Railroading Institute, where Pere Marquette 2-8-4 number 1225 resides. 1225 has never operated on a photo special like this, and is normally seen on sporadic excursions during summer season, or the holiday trains during the Christmas season. 1225 is well-known as being the locomotive that was used as the template for the movie 'Polar Express' a few years ago. We arrived early so that we captured some of the activity on Friday with the train being assembled for the weekend. See 1225 moving around, and Flagg Coal Company 0-4-0T Number 75, which was given its original number, 2, for this weekend. Both engines are seen at Owosso as switching duties are performed. On Saturday and Sunday we start before dawn, with sunrise scenes that accent the profile of the fine lines of this steam locomotive. We work two different lines on both Saturday and Sunday including the former New York Central line, and the former Ann Arbor line from Owosso, Michigan. During the days we are treated to several different runbys, that include reflection shots, grain elevators, and much more. In addition some period vintage vehicles are used with some of the runbys. There are scenes of 1225 on the turntable as it is serviced between runs. Two camera coverage includes extra scenes at some locations, plus some spots where we could combine two camera shots into one runby. Don’t miss this first-ever photo special for Pere Marquette 1225. Colour with live stereo audio.
GS 053D OHIO RAIL DIAMONDS 82 min $41.00
Our day of shooting Ohio Rail Diamonds begins in Fostoria, where we see CSX trains primarily, including ones from Toledo connecting to the east-west mainline, and trains on that line going both directions. Then we move east to a rural diamond at Attica Junction where the same CSX mainline toward Pittsburgh and Cleveland crosses the Norfolk Southern's line that goes between Columbus and Belleview. Then we return to Fostoria to see some action at the western Diamond where NS crosses CSX at the old B&O depot. The former Baltimore and Ohio Line crosses the former Nickel Plate here. Then we head west to Deshler Ohio where the east-west line toward Chicago crosses the Toledo Subdivision that runs from Cincinnati to Toledo. Trains also connect to the east-west line here as many trains head east from Cincinnati or south from the east. Our next stop is at Leipsic Junction located south of Deshler. This is the crossing of the former B&O Toledo-Cincinnati line, with the former Nickel Plate(now NS) line between Fostoria and Ft. Wayne. An abandoned Tower guards the diamond. We see a nice variety of motive power and trains for this day long shoot which takes us back to Deshler to end the day, as we see a transcontinental container train that is two miles long cross the diamond as another train diverges along side it. We have added two more related segments to this day-long diamond shoot. First we include footage from 2005 when we spent a morning in Deshler. This has some glorious morning lighting, as we see 12 trains in a span of 3 hours. We did not spend a lot of time in Deshler in our 2006 day of diamond shooting, so this 2005 segment is a nice addition. It is not narrated, but has live audio. Then we wrap up the program with a Flash-back to 1991 and a few trains that we saw at Leipsic Tower and in Lima. We see some now retired 4-axel power, and a couple of surprises. The main portion of this program is shot in wide-screen format, but the 2005 Deshler segment, and the 1991 Leipsic segments are in standard 4:3 of course. There is a lot to see in Ohio Rail Diamonds.
GS 053D LAST STREAMLINERS THROUGH THE ROCKIES 98 min $41.00
The concept for this program began with two 16mm colour films shot by Everett Rohrer. The idea of Last
Streamliners is because one film is the last run of the ‘Royal Gorge’ passenger train, which Everett rode and film for posterity. First we see another film shot by Everett Rohrer of a 1970 Winter ride on the California Zephyr with Rio Grande F-units, traversing the Colorado Rockies with snow on the ground in the higher elevations. This is all shot from a dome car, with nice views of the train ahead, the many tunnels, the scenery, and even a meet with the eastbound Zephyr. The next segment is a 1981 chase by Greg Scholl that shows the Rio Grande Zephyr led by F-unit 5771 as we follow it trackside from west of Moffat Tunnel to Glenwood Canyon. This is sound movie coverage, and historic since the train was discontinued in 1983, but 5771 was saved and is at the Colorado Railroad museum today. Our third segment is the Last Run of the ROYAL GORGE passenger train with an F-unit and 3 coaches as heads south of Denver toward Colorado Springs and Pueblo where there are numerous passengers getting on and off. Then the train heads west through the Royal Gorge, where a stop is made for passengers. Then its on to Salida, where the train is turned on a wye, for the return to Denver for the last time. Again we stop at the Hanging Bridge in the Royal Gorge, and this time there is a rock slide. Later our photographer gets a cab ride into Denver Union Station. To finish off this program, we have added scenes of the Moffat Route shot in 1994 taken by Greg Scholl of the California Zephyr between Moffat Tunnel and Dotsero. This includes two different westbound trains, and one eastbound that has three units on it, including a Rio Grande leading. This train is interesting, and includes one of most dramatic bad weather shots on video!!! If all this were not enough we included some footage we got at the last minute that shows some scenes at Pueblo station shot between 1951 and 1953, and includes a couple of steam shots, as well as some scenes of the Royal Gorge Passenger train. All the 16mm film scenes in this program have music and narration since there was no sound on the films of course. However, we do have the 1981 footage with train sounds, as well as the 1994 video we shot. This is a nice cross section of material showing passenger service in the Colorado Rockies. The Rio Grande operated the last Streamlined passenger trains in this region, before Amtrak eventually took over the Denver to Salt Lake Segment.
GS 055D SANTA FE / SOUTHERN PACIFIC COMBO (2 DVD Set) [$6.00 Postage] 150 min $59.00
SANTA FE PICTORIAL 80 min
Enjoy great action on the Santa Fe Railway with a variety of trains and locations. Similar to our Southern Pacific Pictorial this video was shot over several years, and includes action on Cajon Pass, and Tehachapi loop, plus some additional shots along the transcontinental mainline in Arizona and New Mexico. Tehachapi is interesting as we see old units, then in more recent times new wide-cab units in their first tour of duty. See Tehachapi loop with several trains in the region and a variety of trains and paint-schemes. One scene shows a 10-unit freight descending the loop at Caliente with a flock of sheep in the foreground competing to make the most noise, and there is a caboose or two also. The new GM and GE widecabs are evident as well as older F45 units. Shot between 1989 and 1992 there is a wealth of interesting trains and rugged western scenery to enjoy, all before the BNSF merger took place. DVD includes an additional 20 minutes of footage that was added when the DVD was made. This new footage was shot in 1995, along the Santa Fe Mainline mostly in New Mexico and Arizona. We see some neat shots at the remote Canyon Diablo bridge, east of Flagstaff, including a brand new SD75 on a westbound which we see a couple of more times later. There are also scenes near Crozier, east of Seligman, and near Kingman.
The Santa Fe may be gone in name, but it lives on in this program!
SOUTHERN PACIFIC PICTORIAL 70 min
Enjoy great action on the Southern Pacific system with a variety of trains and places. There is heavy action on Cajon Pass and Tehachapi Loop, some scenes on Donner Pass in California, plus a few other places are sampled. Scenes were shot between 1989 and 1994, and there are two visits to Tehachapi where we see old power and new power 5 years later. The famous Tehachapi loop is seen as well as Cajon Pass, the gateway to Los Angeles. We'll witness the ‘Oil Can Train’ a monstrous oil train from Bakersfield that assaults Tehachapi with 10 diesels including mid-train helpers. What a sight at Caliente and the loop! You'll sample freight on Donner Pass in the Sierras, and see some SP on the former Rio Grande in Utah. There are pushers and mid-train helpers throughout the program. Its a nice way to remember the ‘Good old Days’ of Southern Pacific, before the BNSF merger. The DVD has some additional scenes that were shot in 1995, along the Shasta route, and includes some scenes with Mt. Shasta in the background. There are also a few other scenes in the region including near Klamath Falls, and more.
GS 056D PLOW EXTRAS 45 min + Previews $41.00
In February of 1988 we returned to southwestern Ontario, to capture snow plow action on Canadian Pacific and Canadian National branchlines. We spent 10 days in the Stratford area and recorded 8 different plow extras. As power we see 5 different CN F7s, plus a CN GP9, andCP Alco C424s and RS18s at work. We also see 3 different types of wedge plows including the black teflon painted plow from London, Ontario. Lines covered are the CN lines to Goderich (twice), Port Elgin, and Owen Sound. CP Plows run to Owen Sound, and Goderich which was the second to last run of a plow on this line. All these lines are gone now except the CN Goderich Sub. If all this isn't enough we obtained some old film of a plow wreck at Granton, Ont. in 1971 where the plow flipped over in a deep cut. We found the plow foreman and he gives us his account of the accident on camera in 1988. This is one of the rarest pieces of train film I have ever seen. Then we end the video with a shot at Granton in 1988 of a Plow Extra going through the same spot on the CN. This video and the Snow Plow with CN F7s are both classic videos, and are rare viewing since most of these lines are now a distant memory. If you like trains, then you haven't lived until you have seen these plows in action.
GS 057D AMERICA BY RAIL ~ THE WEST COAST ROUTE 90 min $35.00
The West Coast Route continues the tradition of the "America By Rail" series as we travel from San Diego, California on an incredibly scenic journey to Seattle, Washington. This 1600 mile journey begins at the Mexican Border as we ride the San Diego Trolley into the City. There we board one of the Amtrak trains to Los Angeles along the Surf line as we skirt the Pacific Ocean for much of the Journey.
Arriving in Los Angeles we change trains and board the fabled Coast Starlight for the trip to Seattle. The scenery is magnificent as we leave Los Angeles and later skirt the Pacific from Ventura northward. After a night on the train, we awake north of Sacramento and later cross the Cascade Mountains of southern Oregon before reaching Portland and finally Seattle. This video also features beautiful music by Mike Lynch, and some railroad side-trips including the Yosemite Mt. Sugar Pine Railroad, the California Western Railroad, the Sacramento Southern Railroad, the Spirit of Oregon Dinner train, and the Mt. Hood Railroad. You'll see everything from a Shay Steam engine to a diesel going through a switch-back in Oregon. If this isn't enough you'll also visit the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, and see some of the sights of Seattle including a ride on the Monorail. Its another relaxing sight and sound experience.
GS 058D AMERICA BY RAIL ~ EAST COAST WINTER WONDERLAND 90 min $35.00
This title is quite unique since the journey was aboard Amtrak's Cardinal after a very heavy snowfall. The journey picks up at first light east of Maysville, Kentucky, and concludes with the stop in Clifton Forge, West Virginia, after travelling along the Ohio River, and later the famous New River Gorge. It's a rare treat to be onboard during the winter and on a crystal clear day. The music by Michael Lynch is exceptional for this video as well. Since it was winter we did not have the opportunity to do off train locations, but we have an added bonus of including some steam locomotive excursions that formerly traveled this same route east of Huntington and through the New River region. Included are scenes of C&O 614 in the winter of 1985, and scenes of 2765, plus Nickel Plate 765 and Pere Marquette 1225, and Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 #261. The overlook at Hawks Nest is featured from above the railroad several times, and you'll see one of the perches in the winter from the train. The New River gorge never looked better than it does with all the leaves down in the fall, and a blanket of thick snow on the ground.
GS 059D AMERICA BY RAIL ~ ROUTE OF THE SOUTHWEST CHIEF 90 min $35.00
The 4th and final tape in the series is by no means the least dramatic. Travel 2300 miles over the famous former Santa Fe Railroad from Chicago to Los Angeles on the Southwest Chief. This famous train works its way past Chicago's skyline, farm fields, the Great Plains, the southern Rocky Mountains, and through the great southwest. You'll experience breathtaking views from the sightseer lounge, enjoy dinner in the diner, and slumber in your cozy sleeping car. We bring you the best views including onboard the train, the train passing by, and inside the locomotive cab for some portions of the trip.
Along the way stop and visit historic and scenic railroad attractions including, The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad (plus a visit to the famous Dwight D. Eisenhower Museum), historic Dodge City, the Cumbres and Toltec steam railroad in Colorado, the charming Santa Fe Southern Railway in New Mexico, Arizona's incredible Verde Canyon Railroad, California's Orange Empire Railway Museum and historic Knotts Berry Farm Railroad. You're even pampered on a short trip aboard the American Orient Express cruise train! And, no trip to the Southwest would be complete without seeing the Grand Canyon. The nice part of this view is that its an aerial view! There is definitely something for everyone in this video which features more dynamic and relaxing music by Mike Lynch.
Purchase all 4 titles in the 'AMERICA BY RAIL' Set - $110.00 - Order Code: GS 010 / 059D
GS 060D Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range - STEAM VARIETY 44 min $41.00
This program is a great companion to the title ‘DM&IR Yellowstones - Giants of Steam’ (GS 015D). It has many things in it not seen in the other, which makes both programmes great to own. The new DM&IR Steam Variety has many scenes of Proctor Engine terminal as well as Two Harbors terminal. Yes, there is plenty of 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone footage, and besides the ore hauling, we see them performing ore-thawing service, and in some late steam-era excursion service as well. Besides the big Yellowstones we also see a variety of other DM&IR steam engines including switching duties with ex-Bessemer engines and DM&IR power. We will see the well-proportioned 2-10-4's and other locos moving about the yard areas too. This footage is all 16mm film originals. We have also included a few minutes of the nearby shortline Duluth and Northeastern Railway. All of the films have sound added. As with most films there was none that was shot on the film. However, we used audio that we had from 1958-59 visits. As mentioned there are few excursion scenes shown, including one in 1961 which had two Yellowstones running on two separate excursions on the exact same day. One was from Two Harbors and one from Duluth. We see shots from both, which had Yellowstones 224 and 225 on the different excursion trains.
GS 061D SP'S OVERLAND ROUTE 67 min $41.00
We begin crossing the Bay Bridge to San Francisco and see the SP Ferry ‘Eureka’, plus streetcars in San Francisco, also scenes at the Oakland Mole passenger terminal. Besides some steam scenes, there is rare footage of the ‘City of San Francisco’ in the late 30's with the rare yellow E2's. We then see an assortment of trains as we head westward toward Sacramento. There is a host of steam power with 4-6-2's, 4-8-2's, 4-8-4's, 0-8-0's, 0-6-0's, 2-8-0's, 2-8-2's, 2-10-2's, 4-8-0's, and of course the mighty and famous articulated Cab Forwards. See switching in Roseville, and mainline trains of all types heading through this region. Donner Pass east of Roseville, and west of Reno is captured with a variety of trains including Cab Forwards on both freight and passenger trains. There are scenes of a Cab Forward on the Roseville Turntable, as well as other surprises. The last cab forward run, with 4274 is seen a few times headed east toward Reno. See a Virginia & Truckee train waiting at the Reno depot, and shots of SP action around Sparks. A few scenes here are Black and White, but otherwise the show is mostly colour footage. This vintage material has no original sound, but we have added loads of informative narration about the trains, engines, and locations, as well as a music background. After the vintage material is finished we have added in some former SP engines that do have live sound. This is in the form of 1999 footage which includes some scenes of SP 4449 en route to Railfair on the BNSF line, and some neat shots of 1233, an 0-6-0 working a freight from Sacramento to Woodland, CA in 1999 real steam freight action. These two segments have live audio.
GS 062D MEMORIES OF NORFOLK & WESTERN 611 74 min $41.00
Watch 611 work hard on the steep grades including Erlanger Hill in Northern Kentucky, plus the grades at Batavia, Peebles, and Seaman on the Cincinnati to Portsmouth Line. Besides a variety of excursions, there are some one-way moves, including a short freight train pulled by 611. We also witness the final time that 611 is turned on the Portsmouth wye, and enjoy some pacing scenes on the Columbus line. A special surprise is included in the original program released in 1995. This is home territory for us, as we live in Batavia, Ohio 22 miles east of Cincinnati, so we know the
railroad, and therefore bring you the highlight locations of each run. In addition there was an original video tape that was lost at the time of the 1995 release, and later located. This additional 14 minutes of a 611 run is included as bonus material at the end of the DVD program without narration, but includes scene location graphics. This shows portions of a Kenova to Cincinnati excursion in June of 1993. The tape was located a couple of years after the original tape was edited, and now it is included. Great steam action abounds throughout this collectors edition which will provide a lifetime of pleasure and ‘Memories of Norfolk & Western 611’..A must for every steam train enthusiast!
