The steam locomotive has left many memories, for it was the most human machine invented by man – the reason no doubt why those ‘iron horses’ stirred so many imaginations. To a far greater degree than achieved by any other means of mechanical transport, the steam locomotive became an integral part of life for generations of New Zealanders. It carried them to school and work, transported them on holidays and to distant relations, and, most importantly, served to bring the country closer together, joining town and country. For over a century in New Zealand, steam locomotives provided the main motive power on the main line, branch lines, hauling express passenger trains, mixed trains and goods trains. Steam operations came to a close in the North Island in December 1967 but continued for a further four years in the South Island until October 1971. The only regular use of steam traction on New Zealand railway tracks was the ‘Kingston Flyer’ that ran two return trips per day over the summer months between Lumsden and Kingston from 1971. In 1985 Railway’s Management relented to the pressure from railfans to allow privately owned steam locomotives to return to their tracks.
NEW ZEALAND STEAM SPECTACULAR is compiled from the NEW ZEALAND RAILSCENE series, and follows steam-hauled heritage excursions and special photographer’s trains operated by privately owned rail lines.

With Easter weekend opened to the public, the celebrations continued with the ‘Grand Cavalcade’ of locomotives and a variety of mixed and passenger trains that carried in excess of 8000 passengers over the weekend. Feilding to Gisborne - October 2007
Majik Video Systems - NZ
Feilding Steam Rail ran a passenger excursion over 4 days from Feilding to Gisborne and return during Labour Weekend 2007 behind WAB 794. MAJIK VIDEO SYSTEMS cameras captured the excursion as it ran over the scenic Palmerston North - Napier - Gisborne line including the unique crossing of the Gisborne Airport runway.
WAB 794 entered service in May 1927 and was allocated to the heavily graded Dunedin to Oamaru section of the South Island Main Trunk until the introduction of the larger North British built J-class in 1939. The loco was transferred to Wellington in June 1943 to work suburban passenger trains and in 1954 was allocated to Wanganui for a short period where she was finally written off in August 1955.
Purchased by the Ohai Railway Board in Southland to operate coal trains on their private line between Wairio and Ohai, 794 had a new lease of life for a further five years before being relegated to stand-by locomotive after the introduction of diesel shunters to work the 11 kilometer line.
794 was donated to the New Zealand Railway & Locomotive Society and eventually made her way in steam fromWairio to Timaru in March 1968 for storage until 1973 when she was towed to Christchurch. Following a successful lease agreement with Feilding Steam Rail, WAB 794 was towed north to Feilding in 1997 and so began the long restoration and rebuilding project by volunteer members to bring the locomotive up to mainline running specifications. 2003 saw the locomotive return to the mainline after six years of dedicated work.

As regular main line steam operations in the world are being phased out, New Zealand has become the country that can provide a selection of steam locomotives operating in spectacular scenery and operating conditions that allows railfans numerous photo runbys on the main line and riding on the locomotive footplate. Each year Ian Welch’s Mainline Steam Trust caters for railfans who travel from around the world to experience travelling the length of New Zealand behind beautifully restored steam locomotives such as North British Locomotive Company built JA 1275, J 1211 and JB 1236 and NZR Addington built AB 663. MAJIK VIDEO SYSTEM’S cameras capture the excursion as it ran through both the North and South Islands and features the North Island Main Trunk and the scenic Palmerston North - Napier - Gisborne line with its unique railway/runway crossing at Gisborne Airport. Main Line Steam in New Zealand also covers points of interest along the route including the Raurimu Spiral, the last spike on the NIMT, 1953 Tangiwai Rail Disaster, Gisborne City Vintage Rail and the Weka Pass Railway. The final day of the tour saw AB 663 head the excursion from Wellington to Ohakune where JA 1275 took over for the remainder of the run to Auckland - a 680 kilometre dash that hadn’t been achieved by steam in a single day since February 1965.

THEN ~ At 10.00pm on Friday 7 August 1908, 60 Politicians, as well as their families, invited guests and members of the Press boarded the Parliament Special in Wellington to travel to Auckland to meet the United States Navy’s ‘Great White Fleet’. The train was made up of eleven carriages with seating for 203 passengers and included one dining car that could only seat seventeen people at a time. At Horopito the Public Works Department’s locomotive was replaced with three smaller lighter tank engines to tackle the section of unballasted temporary track at a very slow pace of around 6 mph to Makatote. Auckland was finally reached on Saturday 8 August at 6.30pm after nearly 21 hours - the first through train to travel the NIMT.
NOW ~ The re-run of the Parliament Special of 1908 that inaugurated rail travel between Wellington and Auckland on the North Island Main Trunk was not just a celebration of that historic event but also a triumph for those rail heritage organizations and people who contributed so much to ensure that it could happen. It was an opportunity to take part and to witness a rare and historic event.
The 2008 NIMT Centennial Parliamentary Special was managed by national rail infrastructure operator Ontrack and involved Kiwirail, Steam Incorporated, the Mainline Steam Trust, Feilding Steam Rail
Society, the Silver Steam Railway, the Museum of Transport and Technology’s Western Springs Railway and the Railway Enthusiasts’ Society. The train featured five carriages and a guard’s van including
carriage AA 1013 that is the only surviving remnant of the original 1908 Parliament Special.
We follow the journey of the steam-hauled ‘2008 NIMT Centennial Parliamentary Special’ and its return working to Paekakariki as ’The Governor’s Special’.
