[DVD]

Rock Top Productions / Series 567 Rail Video
The railway line between Adelaide and Murray Bridge was opened in
1886, and thus the Mount Lofty Ranges became a formidable barrier for those
required to work trains over this section.
The line was opened for through traffic between Adelaide, South Australia and
Melbourne, Victoria in January 1887, a distance of 773 kms. The line between
the two capital cities was at that time laid to a gauge of 1600mm. In the early
1980's an agreement was reached between Australian National (South Australia)
and V/Line (Victoria) to allow for the through running of locomotive power.
This is evident by the use of locomotives from both systems on trains operating
through this area. In 1992, with the formation of the National Rail Corporation,
came the announcement of the construction of a new standard gauge/broad gauge
conversion rail link between Melbourne and Adelaide via Cressy in Victoria.
This would allow for one gauge operation between Brisbane, Queensland and Perth,
Western Australia via Melbourne. The double track from Adelaide to Belair in
the "Adelaide Hills" would be made into 2 single lines, one remaining
at 1600mm for the Adelaide Suburban service to operate on, whilst the other
track would be converted to 1436mm. In 1994, John Stone filmed extensively the
broad gauge action from Adelaide to Murray Bridge. In June 1995 broad gauge
working on the Adelaide - Melbourne corridor would disappear forever with the
opening of the standard gauge track. Colour / Sound / Narration

The Rebirth of a remarkable
engineering achievement.
An Engineering triumph 1894 - 1896 / A Restoration triumph 1998 - 2002
This program covers the history
of the railway; the many facets of its rebuilding; and today's remarkable 34
kilometre journey. The story of a remarkable railway born from a frontier spirit
on the edge of civilisation and built against all the odds by a remarkable
people - through some of the most treacherous country on earth - a wild country
critics said no railway could tame.
Built in 1896 for the Mt Lyell Mining and Railway Company, the line ran 34
kilometres from Queenstown to the Port of Strahan and became the lifeblood of
the community. It was unique in that, to manage the 1 in 16 grade over the
mountains, it used the rack and pinion system developed by Herr Abt* for the
Harz Mountains**. Engines were built by Dubs and Co in Scotland. With 48 bridges
to maintain, the railway became uneconomical and closed in 1962, much to the
dismay of locals and railway buffs in many parts of the world. Thanks to
persistence and $30million in government grants, the railway lives again and is
attracting a huge number of visitors.
A unique - a magic sound - a sound heard in very few places in the world. It is
the sound of a steam engine with two sets of cylinders hauling itself up a
mountain on an impossible 1 in 16 incline. A railway carved out of impenetrable
rainforest, the track perched perilously along the edge of a gorge hundreds of
feet deep. A railway that served the mining community of Queenstown until
prohibitive costs forced its closure in 1963. But there was a dream - a dream
that this unique, remarkable railway would one day be reborn. The dream became a
reality thanks to a Commonwealth Government Centenary of Federation Grant, the
Tasmanian State Government, and private investor Roger Smith. Despite modern
technology, the re-builders of the railway met with the same problems their
forebears had faced 100 years before. Two of the original engines had to be
completely rebuilt as did the 48 bridges; track had to be sourced, stations
built and tourist infrastructure designed. The story of the railway's rebirth is
as amazing as its original construction. Today with ownership of the railway now
in the hands of The Federal Group, visitors from Australia and many parts of the
world come to ride the rack; to experience for themselves the thrill of
travelling through this awesome country. colour / sound / narration
*Herr Roman Abt (1850 - 1933) invented his rack system
in 1882. It was first used in 1884 on a railway at Blankenberg in the Harz
Mountains. [The Guinness Book of Rail Facts & Feats by John Marshall, 1971].
**The Harz Mountains are the most northerly mountain range in Germany, located between the Weser & Elbe Rivers. The Range occupies parts of the German states of Lower Saxony & Saxony-Anhalt. (Encyclopaedia Britannica 2003)

SER 022 RAIL VICTORIA (DVD-R) 115 min $49.95
Rock Top Productions / Series 567 Rail Video
The 1980s brought many changes to the rail
system of Victoria. In conjunction with the various name changes that took
place, there was also a change in corporate colours for locomotives and
passenger rolling stock. Through running of locomotives from South Australia
and New South Wales into Victoria was also implemented. The removal of the
Guards Van from freight trains brought about a reduction in Train Crew manning
from 3 to 2. This practice was later extended to include all Passenger
services. The 1980s saw changes to the rail industry of Victoria which could
never be envisaged by the forefathers of years past. This 2 DVD set covers only
part of those turbulent years. Highlights include:
* North Eastern: The ‘Southern Auroa’ hauled by a Commonwealth Railways GM class;
* Northern: Freight departing Echuca over the original Rail/Road bridge;
* Eastern: V/Line ‘L’ class electric locomotive on a Traralgon passenger train;
* Suburban: ‘Y’ class on a train of GY wheat wagons, 2 ANR 930s on ‘The Overland’;
* South Western (Melbourne - Geelong): ANR 930 class on a ‘local’ Geelong - Melbourne passenger train at
Werribee;
* Western: Triple ANR 930s on an Interstate freight, ‘C’ class action on Ingliston Bank;
* South Western (Geelong – Ballarat): Two ‘Blue & Gold’ ‘S’ class on a grain train.
Locomotives in the ‘Blue & Gold’ mix with the colour schemes of V/Line, South Australia and New South Wales. Truly a trip down memory lane.
The BONUS disc features the LAST 'Southern Aurora' departing Spencer Street (now Southern Cross) Station, the LAST 'Spirit of Progress' and 'Southern Aurora' passing thru Kilmore East. See R761 hauling 10 wooden-bodied cars up Ingliston Bank, PLUS much more.

SER 033 90 percent MEN [DVD-R] 57 min $39.95
'Railroads are only 10% iron, the other 90% is men…' SIR HAROLD CLAPP
90 percent MEN takes a retrospective look at the development of railways in Australia, focusing on the role of Sir Harold Clapp – one of the most outstanding and dynamic commissioners of the Victorian Railways. His contribution to railway development in Victoria is immense. He changed our railways and the public’s perception of them. This is a film about a great railway man, and the railway men and women – the gangers, the administrators, the drivers, the commissioners, the retired and serving employees – all contributing to produce a fascinating mosaic of our railways. As they were and as they are now.
90 percent MEN, with the inclusion of contemporary interview material and classic archive footage, provides a unique insight into and captures the spirit which exists between railway men and women – and of the industry in which they work.
SER 034 RAILS UNDER THE SOUTHERN CROSS ~ VOL.3 [DVD-R] 60 min $39.95
SPIRIT OF PROGRESS – 'AUSTRALIA’S WONDER TRAIN': 1937 ushered in a new era of modern passenger rail travel with the inauguration of Sir Harold Clapp’s Spirit of Progress. Built of corten steel – a light-weight steel alloy, with a high tensile strength – airconditioned throughout, the famous blue streamliner reached speeds of 80 mph in its tests. The film traces the design and construction and finally scenes of the ‘Spirit’ on normal running service.
Unfortunately, all four locos were cut up before any could be preserved.
WHISTLES IN THE HILLS: A history of the narrow gauge tramways and railways of Victoria. The film consists largely of a unique collection of archival film on the development of the timber tramways of the state and special emphasis is given to the narrow gauge government lines. Highlights include: Powelltown, Walhalla, the Rubicon area, Warburton, Beech Forest, Puffing Billy and more! With modern film of the remains of these lines, the production sets out to fit the narrow gauge systems into a social history of timber milling and development of the state.
SETTING THE ROAD: From the beginnings of railways it was realized that some form of control over the running of trains was necessary to avoid unnecessary complications! The evolution of signaling and safeworking practices in Victoria is a colourful and fascinating story. With both archival and modern film, a picture is constructed of how these practices evolved from the most primitive hand signals to modern centralized traffic control systems.

EDITOR NOTE
|
Vic’s Railways |
Three chapters of this very historic title will probably generate more
interest than most - Cheetham’s Salt Works, ICI Deer Park and the SEC Electric
Railway at Yallourn. I must admit that I was not aware that Cheetham’s or ICI
operated their own railway system. The Cheetham’s Salt Works was located on the
Point Cook Road on the southern side of Geelong Road, Laverton. This location is
now the housing estate of ‘Sanctuary Lakes’. Between the estate and Port Phillip
Bay is now the Cheetham Wetlands. The last salt harvest at this location was in
1991, with the operation closing in November 1992. Cheetham’s still operate,
with their current works (Lara Operations) located adjacent to the Avalon
Airport at Lara heading towards Geelong.
The 2’ 6” railway within the boundary of ICI Deer Park Explosives Factory
is another that little would be known about, let alone seeing footage of it.
During my career as a Driver I shunted ICI Deer Park a number of times, however,
a STOP board a locomotive length and a ‘bit’ after passing across Forrest Street
in Ardeer did not allow us to see what actually happened beyond. Seeing the
footage that was taken by Vic brings home to the viewer, that more than just
5’3” operations were taking place in Victoria.
The State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) operated a 900mm
gauge, 1100 volt DC overhead electric system on an Interconnecting Railway
between Yallourn and Morwell. The electric locos were withdrawn from service in
1993 and replaced with diesel-hydraulic locos. The entire railway operation was
closed by early 2001 when mining operations were extended – It is now all but
a memory! How fortunate we are to be able to view footage of these 3 systems which
no longer exist.
SER 043 VIC'S RAILWAYS VOL 2 - A further tribute to the late Vic Greensill (DVD-R) 120 min $49.95
Steam Media Productions / Series 567 Rail Video
Vic Greensill was a professional railwayman and railfan who recorded rail history on a variety of media. Between 1991 and 1995, Vic shot video footage in Victoria and Queensland featuring all forms of motive power on many different gauges. Vic’s dream was to have his material published for others to enjoy. Unfortunately a tragic level crossing accident in April 2006 claimed Vic’s life before his dream became a reality. The passage of time has seen most of Vic’s footage become simply unrepeatable. Privatisations, line closures, livery changes and operational restrictions have all contributed to make Vic’s footage absolutely outstanding archive material at the time of this DVD’s production in 2007. In future years, the contents of this DVD will greatly enhance in value as the documenting of an era of significant change on eastern Australia’s railways. Through the co-operation of Vic’s wife Jo, and many of his friends, Series 567 Rail Video and Steam
Media Productions are extremely proud to make Vic’s dream come true in Vic’s Railways – Volume 2.

A NSW TRAIN ON LINE ~ A Trackside Journey ( 3 Volumes )
Andrew McBain
For many years the NSW rail network has been complimented by the diverse array of locomotive classes assigned to work its trains. In recent years particularly, the Southern and Western Regions have accommodated the presence of ARG’s CL and L class locomotives, whilst Lachlan Valley Rail (Freight Division) have relied on the use of GM and 44 class locomotives to fulfil their grain contracts. A NSW Train On Line winds the clock back to the summer of 1992 / 93 when the 44 class made a surprise return to the Southern Region. This rail series takes an inside look at many signal boxes in action and the time honoured tradition of signalmen ‘setting the road’ for the next train. We also document the Double Line Block Telegraph system between Wallendbeen and Harden.
A NSW Train On Line represents a portfolio of memorable images and illustrates a timely reminder that another rail chapter will soon be turned for the last time as progress continues to make its presence felt and efficiency dictates the outcome.

SER 045 THE TITANS' LAST WINTER - Parts 1 & 2 [DVD-R] (Re-released) 90 min $44.95
Africa was the Garratt capital of the world. Many countries on the continent, particularly those in Southern Africa, were home to the giant articulateds which revolutionised load-hauling capacities on steeply graded and sharply curved mountain railways. Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia, was the last world stronghold of regular Garratt operations in the early 1990s. An active
locomotive refurbishment program, good quality local coal, an abundant supply of cheap labour, a lack of foreign capital to buy diesel spares plus a shortage of diesel motive power and the need to keep Bulawayo’s coal fired power stations supplied with fuel brought in by rail, seemed to be the ideal recipe for continued long term steam operations on 700 route kilometres. In late 1992, enter Canadian consultants briefed to create ‘a modern image’ for the land – exit steam. Virtually overnight, mainline steam operations ceased. Engines were relegated to shunt duties. Loads stood idle because of a motive power shortage. Industry, the population and the economy all suffered. However, thanks to the ‘insultants’, the railway had a ‘modern image’ and the chance to record regular mainline steam operation was gone forever. ( INSULTANTS - ‘Marsden’ lingo for Consultants - as mostly all they ever do is come up with ideas that insult normal intelligent people! )
It is against this background that Victorian videographer and producer Bruce Williams captured the last two winters of mainline Garratt steam operation in Zimbabwe. During a 1991 visit, the ‘African Steam Bug’ bit Bruce and in 1992 he returned to record more action. These timely visits provided footage for two popular VHS video programs –
‘The Titans’ Last Winter – Parts 1 and 2.
Both superbly captured the end of an era and were the only commercially available record featuring an intensive coverage of the final Garratt mainline workings. Like Bruce’s excellent ‘Cold Steam’ video/DVD (now withdrawn from sale), they deserve to be available on DVD for their historic value, let alone the spectacular sound and vision they encompass. Whilst Bruce has now retired from the production scene, he has given full blessing for these VHS videos to be produced on DVD by Series 567 and Steam Media.
The combination that brought you the highly acclaimed ‘Vic’s Railways Volumes 1 & 2’ on DVD is together once again to make more historic vision available in this format.
The two parts run for 52 and 38 minutes respectively, giving an hour and a half of absolute history. We see Garratt operations from sunrise to sunset, from lineside and in the cab, on both passenger and goods trains - regular and special, locomotive preparation, shed scenes at Bulawayo and Thomson Junction and the infrastructure associated with steam operations. Lines
covered include Bulawayo - Plumtree, Bulawayo - West Nicholson and Bulawayo - Victoria Falls including aerial shots of a Garratt on the famous bridge linking Zimbabwe and Zambia. The Wankie Colliery line is also featured where ex Rhodesian Railways 19th class 4-8-2s haul coal to the main line. Couple Bruce’s very capable camera work with skilled editing and John Batwell’s informative narration and you have a marvellous memento of an era now gone forever.
FOOTNOTE: A few Garratts still work on shunt duties around Bulawayo at the time of writing. The city experiences regular blackouts because of a lack of coal for the power stations. Several locomotives are available for special trains which run a few times each year. The Wankie, now named Hwange, Colliery railway is still an all steam operation and will remain so for many years to come. The reason the Hwange Colliery will remain steam, is that they cannot buy diesel fuel, let alone afford Diesel Locomotives. Mugabe’s corruption is more than absolute! It is impossible to predict how long the few Garratt shunters at Bulawayo will remain in service.

SER 049 THE MISSING LINK ~ 'Working on the Alice Springs to Darwin Railway' [DVD-R] 80 min $44.95
Series 567 Rail Video is pleased to announce a new title from Falling Gum Photography. ‘The Missing Link - Working on the Alice Springs to Darwin Railway’, filmed by Bernie Baker in 2002 whilst
working at Tennant Creek and Katherine during construction of this historic project. See Rail, Sleeper and Ballast trains, plus footage from the cab.
‘The Missing Link’ shows all classes of locomotives used during construction and display the now defunct Australian Northern logo. Watch as the grunt of 3300 turbo charged horses of the ex-Western Australian L class and 2200 horsepower of the former New South Wales 422 class thrust their exhausts into the Northern Territory sky. Ride in the cab of locomotives as they lift 8000 tonne works trains and return with empty trains at 110 km/h. Footage also includes a 500 class. Powered by a 500 hp English Electric engine, there was one of these little locomotives placed at both Tennant Creek and Katherine and these performed pivotal roles during the construction process. There is no narration, scenes have comprehensive captions.
Editor Note: After discussion with Bernie many months ago about what other footage he had in his collection and on being told about his Northern Territory material, I suggested to him that as nothing was available on DVD on the construction of this line that perhaps he should consider doing something with his footage. Further discussion took place between Bernie, Tony Marsden and myself in regard to the title being released. ‘The Missing Link’ will now take its place with other railway titles of significant historic value, such as Vic’s Railways 1 & 2, Rail Victoria, The Hills Are Alive, and the collection of Tony Marsden’s Victorian Year in Steam titles together with Bernie’s 2 previous titles, The AK Cars and Cab Ride. All of these titles reflect Australian rail history, much of which is no longer in place to view.
NOTE: The 2 previous titles by Bernie, The AK Cars and Cab Ride can be purchased by contacting him direct. The price per title is $20.00, with free post. ( NO CREDIT CARDS ).
Contact Bernie at 18 Evans Parade, Parkes NSW 2870. Phone: 0417 405 752, or check-out the website at www.fallinggum.com.au. These 2 titles are NOT available from Series 567 Rail Video.
SER 050 The Geelong Tramways 80 min $39.95
Roger Greenwood Productions
Geelong is Victoria’s second city having been settled well before the Gold Rush of 1851 which led to the establishment of Ballarat and Bendigo as Victoria’s other two major regional cities. Geelong was the last of these three cities to have electric trams, the system being constructed and operated by the Melbourne Electric Supply Company with services commencing on March 14th 1912. The first 24 passenger cars were built specifically for the Geelong Tramways but from 1928 additional tramcars were obtained second-hand from Adelaide and Melbourne, making for a an interesting and varied fleet. In 1930 all three Victorian provincial tramways came under the control of the State Electricity Commission, and upon closure of the Geelong system, some of the tramcars were transferred to Ballarat and Bendigo where many are still in service. Several others are in tramway museums, but little evidence now remains in Geelong of the tramway system that once served that city. Making use of old maps, engineering drawings, photographs and film, this DVD follows the development of the Geelong tramways over the years and provides a snapshot of the lines and the tramcars leading up to closure on March 25th 1956. In addition to the tramways, a type of traffic signal unique to Geelong is also featured.
Introduction (History of system from opening to 1930)
The Tram Routes (All routes are covered, including ‘nostalgic trip’ to Belmont prior to closure)
Special Track work (Featuring some unusual junctions)
The Geelong Tramcars (Including trams acquired second-hand from Adelaide and Melbourne)

SER 051 RAIL AROUND QUEENSLAND ~ 'THE STORY OF INVICTA' (DVD) 112 min $39.95
Waterstreet Productions (Qld)
Invicta’s story is a fascinating journey, spanning more than a century.
11277, a John Fowler built engine,
was the first brand new sugar cane locomotive to work the cane fields in
Bundaberg. Purchased by the Buss family, the engine was named after the mill it
served (Invicta) until the mill was closed and relocated to North Queensland.
Invicta found a new home at Bingera sugar mill, then she was sent to Qunaba Mill
where she worked well into her 70s, becoming the longest running locomotive in
the cane fields of Queensland.
In 1981, to the heartbreak of many in Bundaberg, the loco was moved to HMAS
Nirimba in Sydney, where it was used as an apprentice training tool for the
Royal Australian Navy until the base closed in the early 90s. Invicta then fell
into decay and after a submission from the Bundaberg Steam Tramway Preservation
society, she finally found her way back to Bundaberg. But she was a wreck. She
remained in dry storage until 2003 when a coincidental visit to Bundaberg
changed the fate of Invicta. The naval commander who took her to Sydney was
passing through Bundaberg when he stumbled on the run down engine. At first
sight he realised it was his duty and passion to see the engine refurbished to
her original glory.
The work started on
the restoration with just a few people working one afternoon per week. The more
they dismantled it, the more work they found needed to be done. Towards the
end, a team of over 20 tradesmen including engineers, boilermakers, fitters and
turners worked tirelessly to ensure she was complete for her 100th anniversary.
The story of Invicta takes you on a unique journey, through the life of this
remarkable engine, recounted with exclusive interviews from many of the people
who worked on the engine throughout her working life. Rare colour film footage
and photographs bring her past to life for the first time.
The story of Invicta is also a rare and
exclusive behind the scenes look at what is widely regarded as one of the most
historically accurate and visually stunning restorations of a Fowler locomotive
anywhere in the world that ultimately turned the team from the Australian Sugar
Cane Railway into local heroes.

The Westlander operation is the sole remaining passenger service from Brisbane to Charleville. Occasionally the train runs as a mixed passenger and freight service. The eastbound service is seen here as this is the only time you can film the service during daylight hours on this stretch of line. We follow the service over several consecutive days. Freight operations observed include coal, grain, molasses, livestock and containers. The opportunity was taken to fully utilize the surrounding scenery these trains run through, being as they are the bread and butter of QR's services to the Darling Downs and beyond. Lockyer Valley Ops concludes with a look at the railway's activities at night. The westbound Westlander is seen here with a freight wagon in tow as it powers through the night on its way to Charleville. Time is taken to soak up the sights and sounds of the railway meandering through the photogenic Lockyer Valley as it was in the summer of 2006.

O 14 QUEENSLAND COAL - BLACKWATER SYSTEM 90 min $48.00
By Highball
This DVD shows heavy coal trains up to 7000 tons and at a maximum of one mile in length running on 3 foot 6 inch narrow gauge in Queensland. These trains are some of the heaviest trains you will see running on narrow gauge tracks anywhere in the world. We get to see a number of trains headed by two 4000 class locomotives usually with a mid train helper. These engines are 3300 hp, designed by Clyde Engineering and introduced in 2000. Where earlier 2800 and 2300 class locomotives are used four units are needed to pull the heavy trains. Although mainly coal hoppers we do also see other freight movements. In addition to lots of coal traffic, you'll see some passenger trains, including the Electric Tilt Train, Australia's fastest, and some regular freights.

SM 025D BYE BYE BROAD GAUGE [DVD-R] 120 min $49.95
In 2001, the Victorian Government announced a proposal to re-gauge the majority of the state’s rail network from broad to standard gauge. Converting the current fleet of operational steam locomotives to standard gauge is not an economically viable option. Thus, the present opportunity to run broad gauge steam state wide will soon disappear forever. Steamrail Victoria ran a series of tours during 2002 advertised as ‘the final steam workings’ to a variety of destinations in Victoria’s north west. This superb DVD provides an excellent record of those history making journeys.
