Twilight Of The Rio Grande
In the late 60's, Emery Gulash was able to produce spectacular full-colour history of one of the most famous narrow gauge operations in the U.S.  Coverage includes single and double headed operations between Alamosa and Silverton, including Antonito, Cumbres, Chama and Durango.  Also included are many rare shots of Pagosa Springs and the Farmington branch.
Worktrain To Silverton

Volume 1: Basics of Steam Locomotive Operation. You're a steam locomotive apprentice on this detailed look at the anatomy, care and operation of a Baldwin steam locomotive. Better bring your engineer's cap and some thick gloves - you're going to get dirty! 1 hr. 30 min.

S 6    THE ROCK TRAINS [DVD]                                                                         80 min +                 $44.00
Golden Rail Video
Telling the full story of drama and tension as ex Hillcrest Lumber Climax #10 and 70 ton Porter 2-8-2 and their crews struggle against time and the elements - starting in dark mornings and with over heavy loads - to stabilize the washed out Nisqually River crossing. No sinecure, this is very tough railroading. These locos are thrashed! A rarely seen side of what daily steam railroading was like, with some of its attending problems. How the crews handled them is a fascinating part of this very informative program. With skillfully composed scenes that will engross the viewer as the story, and problems to be overcome, unfold. With wet rails and 2% grades there is much stack talk & wheel slips and the crews dread of #10's predilection to hop is confirmed when they find it has been substituted for the

failed 2-8-2.  Features: Dolby digital 5.1 surround sound (not Synthesised) / picture & map gallery / narration on/off / interactive scene selection and animated menus.

UNION PACIFIC RUN WORLD'S LARGEST STEAM FREIGHT

143 CARS..-..7780 TONNES (7657 TONS)..-..OVER 2km in LENGTH

WB Video presents complete coverage of this extraordinary event. The action begins a week earlier when the UP schedules 3985 on a test freight run. Then on the morning of 1 August 1990, 3985 thunders out of Cheyenne with the long APL Doublestack train. Multiple on-the-scene broadcast camera crews capture all the action. EDAVILLE REVISITED describes the sale and movement of most of the Edaville equipment to the new Maine Narrow Gauge Museum in Portland, and the short-lived 1997 revival of Edaville itself.  The program includes beautifully-photographed scenes taken during the legendary Railfan Weekend in October 1991, when 2-4-4T No.7 was correctly lettered for the Bridgton & Harrison Railroad for the first time in 50 years!  The little engine pulled a special photo freight through spectacular fall colours.  Coverage of the final 1991 Holiday Spectacular at Edaville is then shown, followed by the equipment move to Portland and the 1997 Edaville Cranberry Festival, complete with superb helicopter views of the little trains in action.  A tour of the Portland museum featuring trackside, onboard, and in-cab views, along with some unusual night video sequences and a colourful fireworks display, completes the program.

In this DVD you will see Shay's #2, #3, #4, #5, and Heisler #6 work logging trains up to lofty Bald Knob (4,842 ft.). You'll also witness action with Western Maryland Shay #6 on the Durbin branch, (the now extinct ex-C&O Greenbriar branch). The winter shots are really spectacular, some in blinding blizzards!...and the spring and fall shots will also take your breath away! Beside breathtaking runbys, there is action of each of these trains filmed from special photo trains, as well as the traditional all steam train race near the Cass station! There are NO tourist trains in these shots...just logging trains! In addition, this DVD includes more than 15 minutes of film from the predecessor to the Cass, the Mower Lumber Company. This 16mm color footage shows actual logging operations of Mower and other footage from Cass. The Mower Company footage includes log loaders and skidders, log trains being loaded, switched, dumped, and logs being dragged by the "green chain" into the mill!(Also available on video: NAS 047, $45.00) Colour / Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound / Narration

S 111    STEAM DREAM - The Ohio Central Story [DVD-R]                                 63 min                 $48.00
Goodheart

Jerry Jacobson is a railroad entrepreneur.  An interest in railroads from a young age led to him developing the Ohio Central Railroad.  He started buying short pieces of line and managed to get revenue loads starting with steel and coal but he developed his business and bought up more track so that a more comprehensive shortline was developed.  Local businesses now ship bricks, grain and lumber on the line.  BUT he also has a number of Steam locomotives and here we see them double heading, side by side and triple headed.  We hear how this man has managed to bring the Ohio Central to life, how his entrepreneurial skills have used money earned through revenue to build his collection of steam locomotives.  He enjoys the variety of diesel locomotives that he has put together for revenue service but he loves his steam locomotives.  Goodheart has been video taping the OC since 1997.  See the best of action from the following locomotives - # 13, 4-6-0 # 1551, 4-6-2 # 1293, and 4-8-4 # 6325.  Colour / Narration / Sound

Mark 1 Video Productions

Canadian Pacific heavy 4-6-2, No. 2317 is one of the star performers at the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania.  Constructed by the Montreal Locomotive Works in 1923. this handsome engine pulled main line freight and passenger trains across Canada until her retirement in 1959.  Purchased by preservationist F. Nelson Blount in 1965, the big Pacific was rebuilt and returned to service in 1978 at Steamtown's previous location in Bellows Falls, Vermont.  Due to her large size, the 2317 could not haul excursion trains over the Vermont Railway, but when Steamtown moved to Scranton, the big Pacific finally had a magnificent piece of railroad where she could really strut her stuff!  This fine program traces the fascinating history of the various classes of Canadian Pacific 4-6-2s, with the emphasis on the 2317 and her G5 class cousins.  Through full-colour archive film, you will see these colourful locomotives in regular service, along with other CP classes like the famous 4-4-4 Jubilees and 4-6-4 Royal Hudsons.  The six surviving G5s are shown in fantrip service, along with the 2317's Vermont debut.  The highlight of the program is a complete trip from Scranton to Moscow behind the 2317, illustrated with beautiful lineside sequences, dramatic in-cab scenes, and our famous ChoochCam locomotive-mounted minicams.  The stack talk is superb and the sights and sounds of this proud Pacific blasting down the old Lackawanna main line are truly memorable!

S 125        Steam Up In The Mountains [DVD-R]                                                86 min            $50.00

Golden Rail

The logging ‘lokey’ seemed to roam all over the timberlands of North America.  These go-everywhere, do-everything mechanical beasts were the raucous cousins of the iron horse.  Their distinct personalities fire the imaginations of modem steam wizards dedicated to keeping them alive.  Many logging locomotives were run until they were totally worn out.  At Mount Rainier in Washington State a home was given to some of these marvellous locomotives and even corroded hulks had a new breath of life breathed into them.  Hear about the problems of restoration and running this unique railroad.  Informative commentary compares the Shay, Heisler and Climax explaining their strengths and weaknesses as well as their unique engineering.  See historically accurate action locations in the heart of big timber country.  Featuring the diverse logging locomotive collection of the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad Museum in Washington State.  At the five steam locomotive event we get to see these fine engines at work, smoke rising high and their whistles reverberating through the woodland.

Fully indexed for easy scene access.  Original music score by American composer Robert Oakford.

The Sierra Railroad is like getting two railroads in one - the Sierra Railroad which carries freight, and Railtown 1897 Historic Park which is run by the State of California.  The freight railroad operated with Baldwin S12 diesel locomotives.  Railtown 1897 operates former Sierra Railway steam locomotives.  In this production you will see an 1892 Rogers-built 4-6-0 and a Lima-built 3-truck Shay.  Both steam and diesel power is highlighted in this look at the Sierra.  On Labor Day weekend 2001 the Sierra Railroad held it’s first steam festival, The Iron Horse Roundup.  The Sierra Railroad #28, a 2-8-0 Baldwin and Mason County #7 were the stars of the show.  Former Southern Pacific #2467 a 4-6-2 Baldwin is also featured. There’s a foot race between runners and a steam locomotive, hand car races, garden railways, and much more.

S 128        STEAM-POWER SAWMILL [DVD-R]                                                                       112 min         $50.00

Golden Rail Video

The sawmill that time forgot.  An action-packed look at an industrial survivor.  The fascinating story of North America's last commercial mill still powered by steam.  Screaming machines, gut-instinct, quick-decisions, and steam power.  This is industrial action the way it once was.  Hidden away in the lush forest of Oregon's Coastal Range is a 1930's-era sawmill almost untouched by time. Every morning the steam whistle of the feisty Hull-Oakes Lumber Company echoes off the nearby trees.  The vintage steam-powered equipment is again fired-up to process old-fashioned long and large timber of Douglas fir for the world market.

Explore all the details of this fascinating mill from log pond to head rig.  Everything from steam engines and boilers right down to the old straddle-carriers that scoot around the lumber yard.  You will crawl underneath for rare views of the mill works.  Venture into the woods with the loggers for a first-hand look at forest operations. Thoroughly entertaining and educational.

BONUS: Servicing the mill is a 100 year-old rail line built by the Southern Pacific RR.  What better way for us to get to the mill than to ride in the cab of the mill train.  Adding to the intrigue is the Willamette & Pacific's locomotive #1801, an old Southern Pacific GP-9 decorated in its historic ‘Black Widow’ paint scheme.

S 130        THUNDER UNDER HEAVEN Vol. 1 ~ 'Thunder from the Wild West’ [DVD-R]                   78 min            $50.00

Golden Rail Video

Like the wild wild west of the 1880's, the human story unfolds with the beautiful Arizona scenery setting the stage.

Imagine in one short year how a lonely cattle ranch in the high desert explodes into an old west-style Las Vegas? Saloons, ...gambling, ...supplies for the trail, ...and fortunes won and lost on a draw of a card.

Here is just a taste of what you will get to see.  Cowboys, prospectors, loggers, ranchers, workers, and fortune-seekers suddenly ride in from all over the high desert and beyond to forge a town where the rules are being made up as they go along.  That's what happened to Williams, Arizona in 1881-'82, but what was the thunder-clap that sparked this ‘stampede’?  It was the Santa Fe Railway!  In 1881, the Santa Fe Pacific carved the first mainline across the state of Arizona...and nothing would ever be the same.  Back then, the Grand Canyon was considered nothing more than a ‘big hole’ inside a forest preserve. Good for mining...and maybe ‘spittin' into’.  Prospectors were about the only ones really interested in it.  So why did the Santa Fe Railway just a few years later jubilantly proclaim itself to be ‘The Grand Canyon Line’?  Well, that's just part of the little-known history of the world's most famous National Park. ...the history that comes alive for you in Thunder From the Wild WestSee how it got started...how it grew...and how it affected the people of the high desert Canyonlands.  Visiting the site of historic cattle ranches along the line gives you a glimpse of life in the high desert before and after the arrival of the Santa Fe Railway.  And then later, you'll hear the story why the Grand Canyon Line whithered and was abandoned...how it was nearly torn up...and how it came back to life.

Discover the new Grand Canyon Railway's race against time to bring the first steamer (#18) back to life from a 35-year slumber...while the whole world watched!  Tour the locomotive shop where legendary steam locomotive #4960 was carefully restored...costing over one and a half million dollars!  First generation diesels are now almost as rare as steam locomotives.  The new Grand Canyon Railway has those, too...an elegant fleet of ALCo passenger diesels.  (Have you ever seen the engine-room of these old beasts? - In this title you will!)

See moments frozen in time...snowy winter railroading with steam and first generation diesel equipment.  Presented in 5.1 Surround Sound

By the mid 1950s the Norfolk & Western was America's last steam stronghold. With diesels on the horizon, the period between 1955 and 1959 brought more photographers to this railroad than any other southern line experienced, resulting in an abundance of fine quality material. This series will chronicle those days of N&W power and glory.
Volume 1: Beginning with an overview of the main N&W locomotive classes, journey on to Columbus and Portsmouth, Ohio to view locomotive classes A, K2a, M and S1a. Then, at Kenova, West Virginia, witness a grand parade of main line freight and passenger trains. With the yards nearby, the depot offered time freights and coal drags of 180 hoppers pulled by 2-6-6-4 A class articulateds, passenger runs assigned to J and K2a class engines and with other runs handled by Y, K1 and S1a class engines. On to the famed Abingdon Branch see mixed trains 201 and 202 running with M class 4-8-0s. Chase this backwoods operation and go along as a passenger. Known as the "Virginia Creeper", the line gained fame in the mid-1950s as the subject of O.Winston Link's incredible photography and recordings. Also, we present a look at the diesels coming on line with GP;9s in red and black plus Alco RS11s and more at Bluefield, Kenova, Roanoke and other areas.
Volume 2: Roanoke, Virginia was the heart and hub of this Pocahontas coal carrier with company headquarters, shops and terminal facilities. Just east of Roanoke lies the Blue Ridge where the greatest show in eastern steam was presented on a regular basis. Beginning at Shaffer's Crossing, take a tour of America's last big steam centre with views of the servicing areas, roundhouse, hump, yards and passenger station. Re-live some events of the 1957 NRHS convention when the shops and Shaffer's Crossing roundhouse were opened to conventioners as well as a triple headed excursion with M class 4-6-0s. At Blue Ridge take a good look at Mountain climbing articulateds as only N&W could provide. Also shown are encroaching diesels. Locomotive classes seen include: 'A' 2-6-6-4, 'Y5-6-6A-6B' 2-8-8-2. 'K1' & 'K2a' 4-8-2, 'J' 4-8-4, 'TE' JAWN HENRY, 'S1' & 'S1a" 0-8-0, GP9s in red and black and much more. Colour / HiFi Sound / Narrated

T 7    NEW ENGLAND GLORY - MOUNTAIN DIVISION [DVD-R]                   77 min                 $48.00
Herron Rail Video
The Glory of New England railroading was never better than on MAINE CENTRALS MOUNTAIN DIVISION in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.  Photographer Stan Whitney takes you back to 1946 and 1950 to relive the beauty and majesty of steam railroading in the vicinity of Crawford Notch, not far from Mt. Washington. Stans brilliant photography has created a rare and marvellous time capsule that will allow you to experience the very real atmosphere of New England steam railroading 50 years or more ago.  Be there to witness fantastic atmospheric scenes of steam engines going about their daily work in the cold light of dawn and heavy mists to doubleheaded freights with pushers blasting up grade. Fantastic!  Leaving Boston, we trace the B&M - MEC seasonal train The Mountaineer en route to Intervale where a Maine Central crew assumes the run up THE NOTCH.  Youll enjoy the view of the rear platform as the E-7 attacks the grade.  Then spend a day on the Mountain Division and observe every movement from dawn to dusk with doubleheaded road and pusher locomotives, mixed trains, local freights and the daily passenger run from Portland.  With beautiful scenery this all steam operation was all you could hope for in New England.  Also included are shots of the roundhouse at Bartlet, servicing operations and many detail shots of structures.  Stan Whitney spared no effort to capture the full glory of this operation and he deserves special credit for this great work.  The film, now owned by James T. Ickes, was provided through the cooperation of the Boston & Maine Historical Society Inc., with arrangements by Carl R. Byron.  This really is a time capsule.  Colour / Narration / Sound

T 11    POCAHONTAS GLORY - Volumes 3 & 4 [DVD-R]                92 min                     $59.00
Herron Rail Video BOTH VOLUMES COMBINED ON 1 DVD-R
By the mid 1950s, the Norfolk & Western was America's last steam stronghold. With diesels on the horizon, the period between 1955 and 1959 brought still and motion picture photographers to this railroad for coverage of it's operations as no other southern line experienced, resulting in an abundance of fine quality material. This series chronicles those days of power and glory in many areas of the company's operations.
Volume 3 - Steam Through The Shenandoah
In the mid to late 1950s, Harry P. Dodge and Bob Flack headed into the Shenandoah Valley to record on 16mm film the steam season finale of the Norfolk & Western. Braving the elements, they duly and dramatically
captured the time freights, mixed trains, coal drags, yard scenes and picturesque ambience of the Shenandoah Division while steam still held forth. You will see Y6 2-8-8-2s, K2s, Ms and S1a class shifters at work in their daily assignments. With the majestic Shenandoah Valley for a background, no portrayal of the N&W was ever more beautiful. Winter is perhaps the most dramatic time to pursue steam and the sequence of steam in snow beside the frozen Shenandoah River is stunning, perhaps worth the tape alone! Also included is a chase of a rare 1956 excursion with K1 and K2 mountain types doubleheaded. A lot of action you are sure to watch over and over again.
Volume 4 - Tipple To Tidewater
Filmed in the late 1950s, this all steam rememberance of coal movement is heavy action in every sense. Never were the Glory Machines more glorious. Beginning at a West Virginia coal mine, you will follow the Y6s on their eastbound struggle to conquer the grades of Bluefield, Christiansburg and Blue Ridge. You will find Y class 2-8-8-2s, A class 2-6-6-4s, switchers and even a J class 4-8-4 on coal assignments all the way to the Lamberts Point docks at Norfolk. The most interesting Lamberts Point operation is seen in detail with coal tonnage being transferred between railroad hopper and ship's hold by Barneys (mechanical mules), rotary dumpers and giant electric hopper cars.

Rails in the Heartland - The L&N, C&EI and IT ~ It was an era of war and heartbreak and then of peace and hope and prosperity. The nation's railroads were stressed nearly to the limit during World War II and then emerged from the conflict to confront nearly worn-out and aging steam locomotives and a dwindling passenger business. Despite this, it was still a heady period on the high iron. Gene Miller was in the Heartland during this era shooting 16mm movies of this tough transition initially, in and around Evansville, Indiana.  Many of our rail action scenes were shot in Evansville where the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railway made an end-to-end connection with the Louisville and Nashville at the L&N passenger depot alongside the Ohio River. The C & E I entered Evansville from the northeast, ran down the middle of Division Street, and jogged over one block to end at the depot which had run-through tracks and a stub-end terminal for Louisville & Nashville trains. The L&N headed west, across Pigeon Creek, where its line to St. Louis split off at a wye at North Howell. The L&N’s Howell Yard and bustling engine terminal were alongside the line heading south to Louisville and Nashville. Colour / Narration / Sound

and returns with logs of Bunyan size. Two versions of the McLeod operation: first, a double-headed fan trip with an SP daylight consist and - in the 10 foot drifts of February - a sparkling vignette

in brilliant sunshine with Mt Shasta towering behind.

The

spindly trestles towering above the canyon walls, the dramatic, airborne ballet at the reloads, with ten ton logs poised for feather light placement, the explosive water dumps. Even the very last train ever to run on The West Side! This is a work of devotion by a motion picture professional, Glenn Beier. It is not a collection of film scraps scrounged from the some cutting room floor. This is the ultimate source for information and dramatic, color photography of the West Side.

Y 06    NARROW GAUGE EAST OF THE SIERRA (DVD-R)                31 min        $47.00

This visually stunning feature chronicles the fabled narrow gauge steam trains of the Southern Pacific which once crossed the desert reaches of California’s Owens Valley. Against a backdrop of soaring snow-capped peaks, the trains make their way to and from lonely mining operations at the foot of the mountains in the sparkling clear days of late Autumn. The entire line as it still survived in 1960 is covered, including stations, bridges, water tanks, and turntables. Narrow gauge gondolas run up a specially-built trestle to dump into standard-gauge cars below.

Enormous bars of silver, too heavy to steal, are piled at trackside to wait the trains arrival. The roads quaint and unique caboose / combine brings up the rear of the train as a Native American from the local reservation, according to official company policy, hitches a ride on a boxcar roof. All this, as the highest peaks in the lower 48 stand watch under the crystal-blue dome of the desert sky. A jewel of a show!  Colour / Narration
