New Release DVDGreat ValueRTN to the LOCKYER
CRISPIN GROVES-RAINES / TRAIN PICTURES

The picturesque 1067mm (3`6") gauge line running between Brisbane and Toowoomba in Southeast Queensland, is the subject of this new DVD title.

RTN to the Lockyer (Return to the Lockyer) is the follow up to Lockyer Valley OPS (Lockyer Valley Operations) filmed by Crispin Groves-Raines between 2006-2008.

RTN to the Lockyer was filmed at various times between 2008-2010 when the author had the opportunity to return to this interesting stretch of railway line, to again enjoy the sights and sounds of the day to day QR (Queensland Rail) and QR National operations, running through the beautiful Lockyer Valley.

Locations include Victoria Tunnel, Laidley, Forest Hill, Gatton, Grantham, Lockyer Siding, Spring Bluff and Toowoomba. In the first section of this DVD, we take a look at the Westlander service which makes two return trips a week, between Brisbane and Charleville.

It is only possible to film the eastbound Westlander during daylight hours through the Lockyer Valley, as the westbound service runs at night. The second section concentrates on some of the freight operations running through the photogenic scenery of the Lockyer Valley.

Coal is the bread and butter of the route and is often given priority over the Westlander passenger operation. Coal services are featured here together with container trains, grain trains and livestock.

In the third section of RTN to the Lockyer, we observe some of the operations running at night. These include freight and passenger services. We take a look at the shunting manoeuvre required to attach additional freight wagons to the westbound Westlander at Toowoomba. Once shunting is complete, the Westlander mixed passenger and freight train is towed out of the station before continuing on its way to Charleville.

Additional footage is included as we take a brief look at the Winelander service, between Laidley and Warwick. The train was on its way from Brisbane to Stanthorpe and Wallangarra. This service can run once or twice a year. Molasses wagons can also be seen in the yard at Warwick station. The Winelander feature and other extra features can be viewed by using the DVD menu. There is much to see and enjoy in this follow up title to Lockyer Valley OPS, as we RTN to the Lockyer.

New Release DVDGreat ValueUK Model Rail Diaries 1 - Model Trains Volume 3
CRISPIN GROVES-RAINES / TRAIN PICTURES

In Volume three of Train Pictures’ exciting “Model Trains” series we take you to the United Kingdom and a model railway exhibition circuit with much to offer the rail enthusiast.

"UK Model Rail Diaries Volume 1" was shot in the UK during 2006 - 2007 by the author, Crispin Groves-Raines. The footage was initially taken for the purposes of modeling inspiration and to record a little of the ambience and atmosphere of these exhibitions. It was filmed using a Standard Definition 3CCD camcorder, capturing rich colour footage. The compiled footage faithfully recreates the live exhibition experience with loads of action… just as if you were there.

Upon returning to Australia the author felt that this footage should be made available for others to enjoy. Indeed many rail enthusiasts living in Australia may not have had the opportunity to visit the UK and see these superb model trains in operation. Several layouts on this DVD have been featured in the UK model railway press and may even be familiar to some people.

Bath Green Park is but one example featuring the double headed steam engine operations of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway. These are faithfully reproduced in miniature on this wonderful OO gauge layout. Bath Green Park is included here for your enjoyment, along with many other layouts including Oldshaw (BR 1980`s) and Strachan (BR Scotrail) both set in the days of the British Railways corporate Blue Livery. This DVD title features the Taunton, Cheltenham and Cardiff model railway exhibitions filmed during 2006 - 2007.

Railfan and hobbyist alike will enjoy this detailed look at the wonderful world of model trains.

New Release DVDGreat ValueWhispering Death
WATER STREET

The Story of Brisbane's Lost Trolley Bus System.

They called them the "Whispering Death". These were the trackless trams of Brisbane.

In many ways the system was an extension of the tramways; they shared much of the same infrastructure.

Whisper quiet, they served the CBD and the hilly parts of Brisbane's suburbs where trams were inefficient.

Decades later, almost all evidence of the trams and trolley buses has been wiped from the urban landscape.

In vivid detail, we see the people and the streets of Brisbane, as they were in the Trolley Bus era.

Extensive historical research, and footage filmed by the people who loved them combine to bring the fascinating story of Brisbane’s trolley buses back to life.

New Release DVDGreat ValueThe Wirral Line
VIDEO125

Drivers Eye View

The City of Liverpool is served by Merseyrail, a suburban rail network unique in many ways and subdivided into two main routes: The Northern Line and the Wirral Line.

We travel over the latter on board third rail class 507 and 508 electric multiple units. While the Northern Line serves the Liverpool side of the Mersey, the Wirral Line runs beneath the wide river separating Liverpool from Birkenhead and the Wirral Peninsula. The Wirral Line consists of two main routes with four branches covering a route mileage of 33 miles.

We see all four branches from the Driver's cab in virtual real time:

CHESTER to LIVERPOOL CENTRAL, HOOTON to ELLESMERE PORT, LIVERPOOL CENTRAL to WEST KIRBY & BIRKENHEAD NORTH to NEW BRIGHTON.

Highlights include the 19th century river tunnel with its 1 in 27 gradients which we see in both directions along with the 20th century single loop line. The majority of the Wirral Line is signalled from the IECC signalling centre at Sandhills and Video 125 cameras were there to follow our trains from a signallers point of view.

BONUS: Liverpool was all about the myriad of docks facing the River Mersey, all of which were rail connected. Included is a unique archive film showing these docks in full swing taken from an electric train running on the famous Liverpool Overhead Railway just a few years before the system was shut and dismantled.

New Release DVD

Great ValueHeritage DMUs on North Eastern Lines
CINE RAIL

In the 1960s Britain’s rail network was contracting at an unprecedented rate, particularly in rural areas. Even where routes were not under threat of closure it was inevitable that much of the Victorian infrastructure and architecture, which provided great interest for rail enthusiasts, would be swept away in an effort to modernise Britain’s railways and reduce costs.

Yorkshire-based amateur cameraman, Frank Dean, felt it was important that a visual record of these lines and structures should be made before they disappeared forever and, using his privileged position as a senior British Rail engineer, spent much of the 1960s and ’70s filming rural lines in the North East of England. By then, passenger services on such lines were handled almost entirely by diesel multiple units and, in filming the numerous wayside stations, Frank Dean secured a unique record of the various ‘First-Generation’ DMU types in use at the time.

The first part of the programme follows the 54-mile route from Hull to Scarborough, with its numerous intermediate stations. Filmed between 1967 and 1969 from regular service trains, and from the lineside, many of the stations still retained their original architectural features, with manually-operated level crossing gates and ex-NER board signals still an everyday sight.

Following this journey, the busy junction station at Church Fenton on the Leeds-York line is shown, with a variety of first-generation DMUs at work in the early 1980s.

Finally, the ex-North Eastern Railway branch to Alston, which diverged from the Carlisle to Newcastle line at Haltwhistle, is featured.

The branch first came under threat of closure in 1959 but survived a further seventeen years, finally closing in May 1976, giving it the dubious distinction of being the last branch line to close in rural North East England. Film taken in summer and winter shows the picturesque 13-mile branch in detail, including the last-day workings which attracted thousands of enthusiasts.

New Release DVDGreat ValueNorthern Ireland Steam - The Final Years
CINE RAIL

Archive Series Volume 12.

Between 1966 and 1970, more than four million tons of stone was transported by rail from Magheramorne, near Larne, to Belfast for use in the construction of the M2 motorway.

This immense undertaking was carried out by daily steam-operated workings, which consisted of specially-constructed side-discharge hopper wagons, powered by 2-6-4 tank locomotives operating in pairs.

Popularly known as ‘Jeeps,’ the locomotives dated from the late 1940s and were designed and built at the LMS’s Derby Works - although assembled in Belfast.

On the 20-mile broad-gauge line between Larne and Belfast, the locos operated an intensive six-days-per-week service and, over the four-year period of the M2 project, powered more than 7,500 spoil trains!

These workings marked not only the last commercial use of steam traction in Northern Ireland but also the last example of revenue-earning broad-gauge steam operation in Great Britain.

The ‘Jeep’-powered spoil trains are shown along the whole of the route from Magheramorne and these workings are the primary focus of the programme.

Other parts of the Northern Ireland rail network also feature, including Belfast’s York Road Station, with Beyer-Peacock built 0-6-4T ‘Lough Erne’ acting as station pilot, together with views of the line to Londonderry.

Also included is the 1970 ‘Colmcille Railtour’, headed by ex-GNR 4-4-0 No. 171 ‘Slieve Gullion’ and filmed at several locations including Ballykelly Airfield, Coleraine and Londonderry.
